With the recent achievement, 12 of IOIC’s existing palm oil mills and supply bases have attained both the ISCC and Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (“RSPO”) certification. Additionally, all of IOI’s operating units and supply chain units in Malaysia and overseas have successfully attained the RSPO Supply Chain Certification, and four of its operating units have achieved the RSPORED certification. Besides good agronomic practices, the success and sustainability of IOI’s palm oil business are largely attributable to the research on tissue culture and biotechnology carried out by IOIC’s subsidiary, IOI Palm Biotech. In the cover feature of this issue, we will give our readers an insight into its various research initiatives. IOI Properties Group (“IOIPG”)’s latest signature development in Malaysia, IOI City Mall, is scheduled to open its doors in November this year. On top of its two anchor tenants Parkson and Golden Screen Cinemas, IOI City Mall recently welcomed three more retail industry giants, Tesco Malaysia, HomePro and AEON Index Living Mall on board. It is believed that the presence of these retail stores at IOI City Mall would further strengthen the mall’s position as a one-stop shopping destination. Apart from that, IOIPG recently signed an agreement with Starwood to welcome two new hotels into its signature townships as part of its efforts to boost its leisure and hospitality business. The hotels are the five-star Le Meridien Putrajaya located next to IOI City Mall and Four Points by Sheraton Puchong, a boutique business hotel located at the Puchong Financial Corporate Centre (PFCC). IOIPG also recently clinched one of the most coveted awards in the Asian building and design industry, the BCI Asia Top 10 Developers Award 2014, while one of its residential development, the Skyz Residences resort condominium project, won the Highly Commended Residential High-Rise Development (Malaysia) award at the recent International Property Awards for Asia Pacific Region (2014-2015). In the specialty oils and fats segment, we have featured a story on how the Chinese government echoing the US government’s effort on banning products that contain trans fatty acids, has recently enforced mandatory labelling on products containing trans fatty acids. In view of the latest move by the US and Chinese governments, IOI Loders Croklaan, a global market leader for low-trans products company, sees huge potential for its low-trans filling fats and low-trans coating fats for bakery and confectionery products. These are only some of the articles featured in this issue. We hope that you find our selection of articles to be informative. Lastly, we would like to take this opportunity to wish our Muslim colleagues and associates a blessed Ramadan, and Selamat Berpuasa. . Karen Liew Keep your contributions flowing in! Tenera palms produced through conventional commercial oil palm planting materials show variations in oil yields and fruit characters. However, if the top 2-5% of the most productive palms in the breeding trials are selected and propagated in large numbers by tissue culture cloning, significant oil yield improvement can be expected, as shown by the results of comparative tests conducted on oil extraction rate (“OER”) by oil mill, showing an increase of over 27% in OER for clones over conventional seedling derived DxP. The clones or ramets produced show similar high yield characters and other desirable traits that the ortet** palms are selected for. Clonal ramets produced through this method had been planted progressively at IOIC’s plantations, initially on a smaller scale of replicated clonal evaluation trials. The next step was semicommercial field planting, and subsequently, large scale commercial field planting. In recent years, IOI Palm Biotech’s Tissue Culture Laboratory has produced over 800,000 high yielding clonal palms from the laboratory per year. It will continue to produce high yielding clonal palms to contribute significantly to the replanting programme of the company in the coming years. BOOSTING PLANTATION PRODUCTIVITY THROUGH BIOTECHNOLOGY At present, substantial areas of IOI’s re-planting areas are re-planted with the high yielding clonal palms, and fresh fruit bunches (“FFB”) produced in these areas are expected, to give significant increase in oil extraction rate and oil yield upon reaching maturity. Striving toward Continuous Improvement To further improve on planting materials produced, IOI Palm Biotech Centre also carries out other biotech as well as molecular and genomic research to ensure the sustainability of palm oil business for the company and the country. Its molecular research team is actively involved in the research of oil palm at the molecular level toward achieving long term improvement of oil palm planting materials for IOI’s plantations. Some of the research projects being carried out in IOI Palm Biotech Centre include Quantitative Trait Loci (“QTL”) linkage mapping, genetic diversity study and DNA fingerprinting. Biotechnology research conducted at IOI Palm Biotech Centre integrates the liquid suspension culture (“LSC”) system with the existing gel culture system to enable rapid multiplication, which in turn results in the increase of ramet* production within the same timeframe. It also enables reduction in labour, as well as amenability to computerised control of the operating conditions. At IOI Palm Biotech Centre, our vision is to be a leading biotechnology company developing and utilising cutting-edge technologies to add value to oil palm planting materials and related products for sustainable growth and financial returns to the company and the palm oil industry. A researcher performing molecular research work in the laboratory. IOI Palm Biotech Sdn Bhd is IOI Corporation Bhd’s (“IOIC”) wholly-owned subsidiary that was incorporated in August 2009. Located on an approximate 8-acre land at the IOI Resort City, the centre, which is headed by Dr Lim Loon Lui as its Controller of Biotechnology, incorporates a tissue culture laboratory for commercial production of oil palm clones; laboratories for molecular, genomic and biotech research and nurseries for clonal ramet* hardening and establishment. Dr Lim and her team have also been involved in on-going international collaboration projects on oil palm genome research since 2009 to discover methods that will ensure that oil palm seedlings are screened at an early stage and only those with traits of interest will be selected for field planting. Such planting materials are believed to promise high yield and a tolerance or resistance to disease, and will lead to long term sustainability of palm oil business for IOI as well as for the palm oil industry in Malaysia. Recognition of Research Excellence The support and encouragement provided by the management of IOIC has played a crucial role in enabling IOI Palm Biotech to rise above its long and challenging R&D years to establish a strong footing in commercial production and field planting. Additionally, it being awarded the Bionexus status in 2009 and the Agriculture Biotech Excellence Award in 2013 has further affirmed and motivated IOI Palm Biotech Centre to continue to strive for greater heights to contribute to the growth and sustainability of the palm oil business for the company, as well as to the palm oil industry in the country. IOI Palm Biotech Centre’s key role is to produce high yielding oil palm clones and research on the latest technologies such as molecular markers and genomics for continuous improvement in oil yield and quality of oil palm. The expertise and cutting edge tissue culture cloning technology for the successful production of superior oil palm clones had been developed in-house under the leadership of Dr Lim through more than 20 years of intensive and systematic research at IOI Tissue Culture laboratory (formerly the Research Unit for oil palm tissue culture and biotechnology under Plantation Division of IOIC). The notable increase was primarily contributed by the one-off net extraordinary gain of RM1.83 billion from the recent demerger of the property business which is now listed as IOI Properties Group Berhad (“IOIPG”). IOIC’s plantation profit rose 47% to RM306.8 million due to higher crude palm oil (“CPO”) and palm kernel prices, as well as an increase in share of results in Bumitama Agri Ltd in Indonesia. The resource-based manufacturing division reported a 9% decline to RM205.2 million in profit due to lower margin in the refinery and oleochemicals sub-segments coupled with lower sales volume from the refinery sub-segment. However the lower margin was offset by higher contribution from the specialty oils and fats sub-segment. Moving forward, IOIC is optimistic about CPO prices well supported by higher biodiesel mandates in both Malaysia and Indonesia, increased demand from India and Pakistan due to the festive season, and the likely occurrence of El Nino. IOIC also expects its resource-based manufacturing division to perform reasonably well in Q4. IOIPG reported a 70% on-quarter drop in the January-March net profit of RM89.11 million with its revenue amounting to RM361.46 million. The drop was mainly due to the recent price controlling measures by the government which saw an increase in the property gains tax which impacted domestic sales. As a result, the outlook for the local property market as well as Singapore remains challenging especially in the high-end segment. Nevertheless IOIPG has registered a significant presence in the local mass-market segment which is its key revenue driver. In addition, IOIPG’s strong presence in Xiamen, China will contribute positively to the results of IOIPG. IOI ADDS ON TO ITS RSPO-RED CERTIFICATIONS FOR TRADING R SPO-RED (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil-Renewable Energy Directive) is a voluntary add-on sustainability certification system to the RSPO standard with compliance to the European Union (“EU”) RED requirements for biofuels and bioliquids markets in EU. The RSPO-RED scheme was approved by the European Commission on 23 November 2012 in conjunction with the RSPO Principles & Criteria, the RSPO Certification System Requirements, the RSPO Supply Chain Certification System requirements and standards. All RSPO-RED producers and supply chain operators (such as estates, palm oil mills, bulking installations and refineries) that seek to supply palm oil products and take legal ownership of the physical RSPO-RED-certified palm oil products must be audited and certified by the approved certification bodies. IOI Mayvin Grouping in Sabah was awarded the first RSPO-RED certificate in October 2013. Subsequently, IOI Edible Oils Sdn Bhd, IOI Loders Croklaan Procurement Company Sdn Bhd and IOI Commodity Trading Sdn Bhd were audited and recommended by Control Union Malaysia for RSPO-RED certification, which was issued to the respective IOI subsidiaries on 21 May 2014 (with a four-year validity). They are now able to purchase and trade CSPORED (Certified Sustainable Palm Oil-RED) under Segregation (“SG”) and Mass Balance (“MB”) models for CSPO-RED production from Mayvin Palm Oil Mill and other CSPO-RED-certified mills. IOI MARKS NEW MILESTONE IN SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY IOI Corporation Berhad’s (“IOIC”) existing 12 palm oil mills and supply bases have successfully attained the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (“RSPO”) certification and International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (“ISCC”) following the ISCC certification that was received by Leepang Palm Oil Mill on 12 June 2014. These commendable achievements are in tandem with IOI’s endeavour to promote the production of sustainable palm oil along its value chain. The newlyacquired palm oil mills and estates from Unico-Desa Plantations Berhad are expected to follow suit in the coming years. 07 DELEGATION VISITS IOI HQ A delegation of Chinese government officials headed by the Executive Vice-Governor of Yunnan, HE Madam Li Jiang visited IOI Corporation Berhad’s headquarters at IOI Resort City, Putrajaya on 10 April 2014. It was the second visit by the Yunnan government following the official visit by Yunnan Governor HE Li Jiheng in March last year. The delegation was warmly greeted by IOI Group Executive Chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Lee Shin Cheng and the senior management team of IOI Group. The delegates visited the palm oil product exhibition area and IOI Sales Galleria to learn about the treasures of palm oil and IOI’s flagship property development projects. During the visit, Madam Li Jiang extended an invitation to IOI Group to participate in the upcoming China-South Asia Expo in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province of China. The expo is expected to serve as a good platform for entrepreneurs to seize economic and trade collaborations with corporations from South Asian countries. Madam Li Jiang also invited Tan Sri Dato’ Lee and the IOI team to visit Yunnan Province to explore business and investment opportunities there. Both parties have maintained good ties since the previous meeting, and the Yunnan government hopes to continue to foster the ties between the two in order to promote a mutually beneficial alliance in the coming years. PAMOL GETS A VISIT FROM UNILEVER O n 20 June 2014, a group of visitors from consumer goods giant Unilever visited Pamol Kluang to learn more about plantation activities and downstream manufacturing processes. They were welcomed by Pamol Timur (“PT”) estate manager, Aplasami G. Paidiah, and Pamol Kluang palm oil mill manager, Mohd Hamdan. IOI Group’s sustainability video provided them with an overview of the sustainability practices of the Group. The group then travelled to PT estate and sportingly tried their hands at harvesting fresh fruits bunches (“FFBs”). After a brief stop at Pamol Barat Estate’s nursery to learn how oil palm seedlings are nurtured, they arrived at the mill to observe the milling process where FFBs were processed into crude palm oil (“CPO”) and palm kernel oil (“PKO”).The Unilever team was impressed that all oil palm by-products including fibre and effluent are effectively recycled as burning fuel and fertilizer respectively. The visit ended with a tour of the refinery. 08 CORPORATE UPDATES CORPORATE UPDATES BERITAIOI SAFETY CAMPAIGN TO BERITAIOI GST teams from Plantation and Resource-based Manufacturing. 09 RAISE OSH AWARENESS I n a bid to improve occupational safety and health (“OSH”) awareness among workers, Bukit Leelau Palm Oil Mill held a Safety Campaign that coincided with the OSH Week on 19 May 2014. Another Safety Awareness Campaign took place at Pamol Palm Oil Mill three days later. Both these campaigns were organised in conjunction with the Health and Safety Month. A token of appreciation to the DOSH officer for making the campaign in Bukit Leelau Palm Oil Mill a successful one. The workers of both palm oil mills were briefed on safety measures at workplace to lessen risks of injuries and accidents. They also participated in an awareness talk and quiz session organised by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (“DOSH”) of Ministry of Human Resources. The campaigns also included exhibitions of photos and stories of work-related accidents. The participants gained useful knowledge on workplace safety and health as these safety campaigns served as a timely reminder to be safety-conscious at estates and mills. MALAYSIAN GOODS AND SERVICES TAX (GST) GST is a broad based consumption tax on goods and services whereby the value added at each point of supply in a value chain up to the retail stage of distribution is effectively taxed. GST is proposed to replace the current sales tax and service tax. GETTING EQUIPPED WITH FIRST AID & FIRE FIGHTING SKILLS O n 26 May 2014, a training on First Aid and Fire Fighting was organised in Bukit Leelau Palm Oil Mill for its staff in collaboration with Malaysian Civil Defence Department of Pekan (“JPAM”). SCOPE OF GST IOI’S GST IMPLEMENTATION GST shall be levied and charged on all taxable supply of goods and services made in the course or furtherance of business in Malaysia by a taxable person. GST is also charged on the importation of goods and services into Malaysia. Generally, only businesses that produce taxable supplies are eligible to recover input taxes. The introduction of GST in Malaysia is expected to make a significant impact on businesses. The relatively short lead time means businesses need to act fast to take the necessary steps to be GST ready by 31 March 2015. A taxable supply is a supply which is standard rated (6%) or zero rated (0%). Exempt and out-of-scope supplies are not taxable. Standard rated supplies include sales of Fresh Fruit Bunch (“FFB”), Crude Palm Oil (“CPO”), Palm Kernel (“PK”), refined palm oil, oleochemicals, specialty oils and fats, and commercial properties. An example of zero rated supply is the export of goods and services. Sale and lease of residential properties and agricultural land would be exempt supplies. Out-of-scope supplies are supplies which do not fall within the scope of GST and these include nonbusiness transactions, dividend income and sale of goods from a place outside Malaysia to another place outside Malaysia. Representatives from the Bukit Leelau Estate and Detas Estate also joined mill workers for the training which was a proactive measure to equip workers with essential first aid techniques and fire-fighting skills which could be applied in the event of an emergency. The speaker from JPAM kicked off the training session with a briefing on the causes of fire, and steps to be taken during an actual fire. This was followed by a demonstration on how to use three types of fire extinguisher. Participants also got to learn and practise the right techniques in performing CPR and other basic first aid skills, as well as about the need to be aware of potential dangers at workplace. Only GST-registered business can charge GST to its customers. A business is liable to be GST-registered if its annual business turnover of taxable supplies reach the proposed threshold of RM500,000. Otherwise, businesses that produce taxable supplies can choose to be registered voluntarily. Inputs E very drop saves lives. With this in mind, Bukit Leelau Palm Oil Mill collaborated with Hospital Kuantan to hold a one-day campaign on 17 June 2014 for its staff to donate blood and undergo health checks. Outputs Raw Materials Goods Rent A total of 54 employees from the mill, Bukit Leelau and Detas Estates participated in this noble effort. GST teams from Corporate and IOI Properties Group Berhad. SUPPLIER A GST Project team has been set up by IOI Group to ensure a smooth and successful implementation of GST and a GST impact study has been carried out to identify transactions and business practices that would be impacted by GST. This operation of identifying necessary adaptations to policies, procedures, processes, and systems as a result of the GST are currently ongoing and is targeted to be completed by end 2014. GST awareness briefings were held at various locations across IOI’s businesses at IOI headquarters, Pasir Gudang, Kulai, Penang, Sabah and Peninsular estates as well as Sandakan refinery. A major impact of the GST on the IOI group would be the need to implement a GST compliant accounting or IT system that enables GST transactions to be correctly recorded and accurately computed for reporting. Lack of certainty adds complexity to its implementation. At the time of writing this article, the GST Bill 2014 has yet to be legislated as GST Act 2014 and numerous draft GST guides are still being issued as well as amended from time to time. GST regulations as well as GST orders too have yet to be issued pending legislation of the GST Act. Nonetheless, IOI’s GST Project team members are committed to ensure that the group becomes GST-ready by 31 March 2015 and will be GST compliant in all aspects thereafter. Services Utilities GST on inputs = Input Tax The basic fundamental of GST is its self-policing features which permits GSTregistered businesses to claim eligible input tax by way of deduction against output tax. GST on outputs = Output Tax If the amount of output tax is more than input tax, the difference shall be remitted to the Government. And, if the amount of input tax is more than output tax, the difference shall be refunded by the Government. 10 HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT BERITAIOI BERITAIOI LAUGH YOUR WAY TO 11 A HEALTHIER LIFE!
