A SPECIAL EVENING
WITH VIOLINIST BEN BAKER
MONDAY 18 AUGUST 2014
Exceptional Wellington-born violinist, Ben Baker,
is thrilled to be returning home to play on stage
as soloist with the Royal New Zealand Ballet in
Allegro for its national tour of that name from
22 July - 24 August.
While in Wellington, Ben has made himself
available for another special evening at the Club.
At the time of print, Ben’s repertoire had not been
finalised but there is no doubt that Members
and their guests will once again be treated to a
spectacular evening.
Ben was last in New Zealand as a Development
Prize winner for the Michael Hill International
Violin Competition in June 2013. We are
delighted to welcome Ben back and enjoy the
talents of this exceptional young Kiwi.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members,
In this, my first
President’s column, I
do want to say what an
honour and privilege it
is to be able to serve the
Club in this position.
I am sure challenging
times lie ahead. I am
equally sure that the Committee (with the support
of the Members) will face these challenges head
on and deal with them firmly and constructively.
Of course, life is not all hard work (as Ronald
Reagan said, when told that hard work never
killed anyone, “why take a chance?”) and we will
have some fun along the way.
We have some valuable intellectual and business
horsepower within our membership and I plan to
tap in to that as required. People, usually for good
reason, don’t like to put themselves forward, but
when asked, generally speaking there is a cheerful
willingness to help.
Jane Wells has moved in to Juergen’s office (and rearranged it!) and is wearing the Secretary Manager
mantle very ably and comfortably. Her knowledge
of the workings of the Club and its Members has
been invaluable to me as I adapt to my role.
I think that it is timely to remind ourselves of
the important function which a Club serves as a
sanctuary, and a place where privacy and discretion
can be assured. Members are entitled to assume
that anything they say or do within the Club is
kept within the Club and not broadcast outside.
The way to think of it is as Chatham House Rules
applying to all activities and conversations within
the Club.
Ian Fraser, in his last column as President,
acknowledged the retiring and continuing
Committee Members and welcomed the new
members, Peter Cullen, Matthew Beattie, Murray
Newman and Hayden Wilson. These four bring
the average age of the Committee down to a
dangerously youthful and energetic figure.
I was privileged to attend recently the funeral of
our longest serving member, Ian Ewen. Ian joined
in 1938 at the age of 23 and died only a few weeks
short of his 100th birthday. I very much doubt
that we will see a membership length approaching
that figure ever again. I have conveyed the Club’s
condolences to the family.
In a few weeks time, we will be unveiling the
portrait of three Governors General who are all
Club Members, Rt. Hon Sir Michael Hardie Boys,
Rt. Hon Sir Anand Satyanand and His Excellency
Lieutenant General Rt. Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae.
This portrait was commissioned last year and will
form a most valuable addition to our artworks
(precise location yet to be determined).
Finally, it is with pleasure that I confirm the
election at the AGM of Air Marshal Sir Richard
Bolt and Mr. Alan Burnet as life members. Sadly,
Sir Richard passed away shortly before this
Newsletter was published.
So, that’s it until next month. I am looking
forward to seeing many of you enjoying our
wonderful facilities, food and beverage offerings
and the entertaining functions promoted through
the Newsletter. The Winter Series addresses by
Graham Stewart and Wyn Beasley were most
instructive and demonstrated a remarkable
amount of preparation and research. And the
George S. Evans book launch attracted a very
large number.
Best wishes to you all,
Chris Rickit

HEALTH & FITNESS CENTRE NEWS
Dear Members,
Fantastic news – the H&F Centre has just purchased two new sets
of Dumbbells.
Due to Health and Safety precautions it was recommended
we upgrade our old set. The Heavier Dumbbell Set of new
replacements is in the gym already and the Lighter Dumbbell set
will arrive in August, so we have a standby set in the meantime.
Come in and try them out.
Staff – Marlies will be on leave for 7 weeks from 25th July-10th
September.
Mike Wilson (Fitness Consultant) will be in as cover between
2.30pm-5.30pm Wednesdays and 12.30pm-3.30pm Fridays.
Please refer to the H&FC Noticeboard for Mikes profile and times
he is available, as well as our usual weekly Timetable outlining all
Staff Hours.
In association with Wines of
Martinborough, we are going to bring a
collection of wine producer gems from
Martinborough to the Club and partner
them with appropriate dishes from our
kitchen, similar to the Christmas Party.
The invitation went to all wineries and
those that have made the undertaking
to bring their wines to us are Te Kairanga,
Martinborough, Coney, Julicher and Elder.
Each will have a stand in the Kumutoto area on
level 6 and showcase two of their wines and the
Club will prepare food matches.
You will be able to purchase wine and food.
This event will replace the usual last Friday format
and there will be no Happy Hour on this occasion.
