Omar lashes out at
BJP’s ‘divisive politics’
‘Party dividing communities for electoral gains; eyeing boycott in some constituencies’
MUDDASIR ALI
Srinagar, Aug 30: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Saturday
lashed out at Bhartiya Janata
Party for ‘pursuing boycott
politics’ in Kashmir and
attempting to create divide in
the state ahead of upcoming
Assembly elections.
“An atmosphere is being
created in Kashmir today
where agenda of the ‘ultranationalist forces’ and those
labeled by them as ‘antinational forces’ is meeting,”
Omar said addressing the Legislative Assembly on last day
of the last session of 11th Legislative Assembly here, referring to separatist boycott and
BJP’s attempt to cash in on the
low voter turnout. “Today success of elections in some areas
(constituencies in Kashmir) is
being calculated in terms of
lesser participation of people
and a propaganda is being fol-

lowed that more the boycott
more effective the results.”
At the same time, Omar
said, for electoral gains
attempts are being made to
create division among communities where the boycott
would not work.
“The gulf they are creating for poll benefits cannot
be bridged even after years,”
Omar said in his 25-minute
speech which also focused on
achievements of his government. “Our people will have
to remain extra-cautious.”
Without naming BJP, the
Chief Minister dared the
party to fight elections on
principles. “They should fight
the election on principles and
ideologies and accept people’s
decision”, he said.
Referring to the divide created ahead of 2008 elections in
J&K, Omar said the State was
still paying the price of the “situation” when Kashmir erupted against transfer of forest
land to Amarnath Shrine
Board at Baltal in Sonamarg.
“Some parties are trying
to create a division within
the constituencies and want
to cash in on the situation.
Attempts are being made
to disturb peace and create
wedge between various sections of society,” Omar said.
“We have to remain vigilant.”

House panel to probe ‘land grab’ case
NC, PDP spar for 2nd day
UMER MAQBOOL
Srinagar, Aug 30: For the
second consecutive day on Saturday, legislators of the ruling
National Conference and the
opposition Peoples Democratic
Party engaged in a verbal duel
in the Legislative Assembly
over alleged involvement of
PDP leaders including deputy
speaker Sartaj Madni in a land
grab case in south Kashmir’s
Anantnag (Islamabad) district.
Speaker Mubarak Gul today
directed the House Committee headed by Hakim Muhammad Yasin, probing illegal
encroachment of wetlands, to
inquire into the matter.
During the Question Hour,
NC’s Nasir Aslam Wani
raised the issue of alleged
occupation of 4000 Kanals of
land by some PDP leaders in
Marhama area of Anantnag.
As Wani pressed the Speaker
to come out with facts of the
case, Mubarak Gul informed
the House that Crime Branch
has seized all documents per-
taining to the alleged land
grab case.
“Yesterday I had directed
the Crime Branch to seize all
the documents pertaining to
the case to avoid their tampering. The documents have been
submitted to me for perusal
but I will return them to
Crime Branch to investigate
the matter,” Gul said.
“It would be injustice to
pronounce verdict on the
case at this juncture as Crime
Branch is seized with the
matter,” he said.
Besides, Gul said the House
Committee headed by Hakim
Muhammad Yasin would
inquire into the matter.
Gul, however, revealed
that Sartaj Madni is signatory
as witness to the pact between
owners of the land and villagers of Marhama.
He further divulged that

NC not satisfied, seeks House Committee
ABID BASHIR
Srinagar, Aug 30: The report submitted by the Revenue
Department into the alleged land scam Saturday gave a
clean chit to Deputy Speaker Sartaj Madni. The report also
ruled out the allegations that 4000 kanals of land at Marhama in South Kashmir were encroached by some individuals as alleged by NC legislator Dr Bashir Ahmed Veeri.
As the report was presented in the Legislative Council,
NC legislators including Dr Veeri, Abdul Majeed Bhat and
Ali Muhammad Dar stormed into the Well screaming that
they were not satisfied. “We are not satisfied with the
report Sir. We have documentary proof,” they shouted
and demanded that a House Committee be announced
to probe the matter.
They were countered by PDP MLCs Naeem Akhter and
Muhammad Ashraf Mir. “There should be a House Committee into Haji Yousuf’s death and cricket scam in which Dr
Farooq Abdullah is involved. Dr Farooq should be jailed for
his role in cricket scam,” Akhter shouted. Mir said that by
raising futile issues, the NC legislators hijacked the House
and issues related to general public could not be raised.

‘Give up aggression,
work for peace on borders’ Kupwara gunfight debate in LA |PDP, BJP members shout it out
Mehbooba urges New Delhi to talk to Islamabad
MUDDASIR ALI
Srinagar, Aug 30: Peoples
Democratic Party President,
Mehbooba Mufti, Saturday
asked BJP-led NDA government in New Delhi to give up
“aggressive stand” and work
for restoration of peace on
borders with Pakistan.
“Ceasefire violations have
taken place earlier also but the
way the BJP reacted, it was
immature and childish,” Mehbooba told media persons here.
The PDP MP said during
Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led
NDA government, Hurriyat
leaders met former president
of Pakistan Parvez Musharraf
in New Delhi and they even
went to Pakistan. Former
Deputy Prime Minister, LK
Advani, she said, held two
rounds of talks with separatists while they were simultaneously talking to Islamabad.
“If the ceasefire agreement
withstood the challenges
China has entered a long way
into our territory. There we
understand that dialogue is the
way out. But when it comes to
Pakistan, we take a rigid stand
which has a direct impact on
the ground situation in J&K.
during Vajpayee’s time, what
has happened now? The aggression shown by the NDA government is uncalled for,” said
Mehbooba. “They (BJP) should
first concentrate on restoring
peace on borders which will
pave the way for resumption
of the dialogue process.”
Mehbooba said if New
Delhi and Islamabad can’t
improve their relations, then
they should choose another
place, and not J&K, for a war.
She said both the coun-
tries were accusing the other
of violating the 11-year old
ceasefire agreement on the
LoC and international border.
“The present situation
necessitates that defense
ministers of both the countries should talk. But if there
is still no improvement in
the situation, responsibilities should be fixed and both
the countries should sack
their defense ministers,”
Mehbooba said.
