COUNSELLING DEPARTMENT INFORMATION
Scholarship Application Preparation
Mrs. Chittenden has met with 90 grade 12 students to explain the scholarship application
process. Students are responsible for doing their own research with the guidance of Mrs.
Chittenden and Mrs. Rogers (Career Resource Facilitator). At this time of year, it is a good
idea for students to begin their research and to request reference letters. More information
can be found on the Riverside Website; check out the Career Resource Center link and also
the Counselling Department web page.
Stay tuned for Scholarship Session #2: Entrance Scholarships in January and Session #3:
Local Scholarships in April
Peer Tutor Support
Tutors are available for support in all academic areas and can meet with students outside of
class time in a supervised location (counselling centre, classroom or school library). Tutor
Request Forms are available in the counseling centre and require both a student and parent
signature. For the benefit of all, we ask that students commit to a minimum of 5 hours (over a
number of days) before requesting a tutor. Contact your counsellor for more information.

no need to apply earlier). Students wishing to be considered for Major Entrance Scholarships
at UBC must apply by Dec. 10th. Eastern universities have earlier deadlines, generally before

SCIENCE 10 EDVENTURE
10-9-8-(ignition)-7-6-5-(my grip tightens)-4-3-2-(oh no!)-1 BLAST OFF. The space shuttle simulator is
taking off!!!!! Well, first let me explain - next APRIL a bus load of Riverside grade 10 students (and
two brave teachers) will be traveling to Orlando, Florida. Their tour, . . . err, (we better change
that!) . . .their lessons will be behind the scenes in Kennedy Space Station, Disney World, Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, SeaWorld, Epcot Centre, Universal Park and Typhoon Lagoon. Their
'EDventure' will certainly be an educational adventure and the TENTH annual trip for Riverside. One
last thing -- I'VE HEARD THERE MIGHT BE SEATS AVAILABLE! So, if you are a grade 10 student, see Mr.
Horton or Mr. Brown IMMEDIATELY! Who knows…you might qualify!!!!
Many families struggle with poverty and hunger. Riverside Secondary
and the other Southside Family of Schools (Central Elementary, Castle
Park, Mary Hill Elementary, Kilmer Elementary, Hazel Trembath Elementary, Citadel Middle, Pitt River Middle, and Riverside Secondary) are yet
again teaming up in the annual “Halloween for Hunger” campaign. Our
ultimate goal is to alleviate the problem of hunger in our community and
to make a difference in the people’s lives.
“Halloween for Hunger” is when all of the schools in the SSFS will
work together with the community to collect non-perishable food items for
the Tri-City Share Food Bank. The elementary schools will encourage food bank donations at their schools by holding events while the
middle and high school students will go door to door asking for food donations in place of candy on Halloween night.
Please help us support this great cause. Flyers will be delivered to your homes in advance to remind you to put aside some nonperishable donations. Thank you in advance for your utmost support!

TAKE OUR KIDS TO WORK DAY
Riverside Math Department to Coordinate “Take Our Kids to Work” 2014
On Wednesday, November 5th, the Riverside Math Department will coordinate Take Our Kids To Work (TOKTW) program. Take Our Kids to
Work™ is The Learning Partnership’s signature program, now in its 20th year, that provides Grade nine students with the opportunity to experience and learn about the world of work as they begin to explore possible career paths. Research suggests that today’s students will have multiple careers over the span of their working years. They will need to master both new technologies and complex social and organizational systems. They will also need to be prepared with the educational tools and experiences that will be necessary to succeed in tomorrow's workplace. All grade 9 students will spend a day at work with their parent, relative or friend of the family. Students will then be asked to complete a
reflection sheet based on their experience that day. Grade 9 math teachers will be responsible for distributing and collecting permission forms.

AUSTRIA, HUNGRY AND FRANCE 2015 SPRING BREAK
Next spring break, the opportunity exists for Riverside students to travel abroad to Europe and visit some of the most culturally significant historical, economic and political landmarks in the world. Our trip evolves around our sister school in Vienna, Austria and takes us through some of the
most breathtaking landscapes and topography in all of Europe. If you’ve always wanted to sample some of the flavors, experience the warmth
and sights of Europe, this is your opportunity.
Our two week trip itinerary has us visiting Vienna, Austria. Attractions include, the Schoenbrunn Gardens, The Spanish Riding School, The Belvedere Castle, St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Natural History Museum, Art History Museum, taking in a Viennese Waltz class and attending a Straus
Concert at the Hueber Kursalon. While in Vienna, Riverside students will be hosted by students from our sister school in the historic, District 3. A
full day excursion takes us to historical and majestic Budapest, Hungry.
Once through Austria and Hungry, we fly to northern France. The splendor of Paris, France and all of its attractions; the Eiffel Tower, Notre
Dame, The Louvre, a river tour down the Sienne and the Palace of Versailles are just some of many attractions we’ll visit. Then north to some of
the battle sites and war memorials associated with the World Wars including Canada’s role.
While travelling, students stay in at minimum, three star hotels which include breakfast and dinner. Lunches would have to be purchased separately. The trip fee of $4200 is great value and includes all air fares, travel insurance, hotel fees, museum and monument entrance fees, tips for
guides and transportation by privately charted coach
while travelling.
If you are interested in participating, you can pick up
an application form on the European Exchange bulletin board located outside Rm. 124 in the main hallway or in the main office of the school. Application
forms can also be downloaded from Mr. Luongo’s
share-point site on our school home page. For further inquiries feel free to contact Mr. Luongo at [email protected] at your convenience.

We're very much looking forward to giving you such a warm welcome in Vienna as well as to seeing as many of
you as possible again soon! Very warm regards, Class 7C, Kundmanngasse, Vienna

IMPORTANT SAFETY REMINDER
IMPORTANT STUDENT SAFETY REMINDER REGARDING FIREWORKS AND FIRECRACKERS
At this time of year, we inevitably deal with incidents involving fireworks and firecrackers at school. We believe it is important to remind all students that possession of fireworks and firecrackers by minors is illegal and therefore contravenes
the school district Code of Conduct. Students found to be selling or in possession of fireworks and firecrackers at school will be sent home on suspension.
At Riverside Secondary, we believe that we need to deal with the issue of illegal sales of fireworks to underage students and we are taking steps to address this issue within our community.
We appreciate your support, as parents, in doing what you can to ensure that your child is not
bringing fireworks or firecrackers to school. By working together, we hope to provide the safest
possible environment for our students. Thank you for your assistance with this matter.
FIREWORKS & THE LAW IN PORT COQUITLAM

Sales of all fireworks are banned within the City of Port Coquitlam
You need a permit to set off fireworks in Port Coquitlam. Application must be made in person at the Tax Office at
Port Coquitlam City Hall (2580 Shaughnessy St.)
You must be at lease age 18 to handle or use fireworks
Fireworks can only be discharged in certain places:
On private property, with the occupant’s consent, and
At a public event run by a public body or society, with written permission.
For more information about local fireworks regulations and Halloween safety call

HALLOWEEN COSTUMES
As we approach Halloween, we would like to remind students that although we encourage creativity in how students choose to dress up for school-related Halloween activities, the expectation is that costumes worn
will be appropriate for a school setting. Students who choose to wear costumes representing anything sexual in nature, glorifying
drugs or alcohol, or which are too revealing will result in the student being asked to remove or cover the costume.
