The Woodlands School provides a supportive and inclusive learning
environment for students from Grades 7 to 12. Through engaging
and differentiated classroom instruction and assessment, students
are invited to think critically and creatively and demonstrate their
curiosity about learning in the pursuit of excellence. The primary
goal of the teaching staff is to ensure that all students receive an
exceptional educational program that will help them reach their
goals for whichever pathway that they choose: university, college,
the workplace, or apprenticeship. Teachers at The Woodlands
School hold high expectations for all students.

approximately 360 gifted students. These students are provided
with rich curriculum tasks which combine optimal and appropriate
levels of challenge and skills. Teachers use a student-centered

SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR (SHSM)
ARTS AND CULTURE
The Arts and Culture SHSM program at The Woodlands Secondary School is a specialized program that incorporates the
disciplines of Visual Art, Digital Media, Drama, Music, Social Studies, Cultural Studies, and Business. The SHSM program
assists students in their pathway transition from secondary school to apprenticeship training, college, university, or the
workplace. The Arts and Culture program consists of a bundle of 8 credits, including 2 co-op credits. It also includes
contextualized learning activities, sector-recognized certifications and training courses, experiential learning activities
through job shadowing and job twinning, reach ahead experiences that relate to chosen post-secondary pathways, and the
development of related essential skills and work habits.
In order to complete an SHSM in Arts and Culture, students must:
1. Complete a bundle of 8 specific courses (see chart below);
2. Complete Sector Certifications and/or training programs;
3. Participate in experiential learning and career exploration activities within the sector (e.g. co-op work experience, job
shadowing, job twinning);
4. Learn and document the industry Essential Skills and work habits using the Ontario Skills Passport;
5. Gain “Reach Ahead” experience connected to the student’s post secondary plans.
