Participants will sharpen their observation and naturalist skills while enjoying time in the outdoors. Come prepared to hike, get dirty and, maybe, wet. Join Brighid Doherty, herbalist and gardener, on a walk at Shore Acres Preserve. You will learn to identify, prepare and use local medicinal plants for everyday health. Common weeds, such as Burdock, Dandelion, and Yellow Dock and wildflowers, such as Goldenrod, Queen Anne's Lace and St John's Wort, plus many more will be discussed. All ages are welcome. Deer Isle Enjoy a morning bike ride along scenic Reach Road. We’ll start from the parking lot of St. Brendan’s Episcopal Church and ride a relatively flat 8 mile round trip route to IHT’s Reach Beach and back (optional extension down the Fish Creek Rd). A “support” truck will follow riders; great family activity! SUN, JUNE 15 Island Clean Up Kayaking Trip 8:30-4:30 PM at Old Quarry Ocean Adventures Join us at OQOA for a full-day sea kayak trip to IHT’s Wreck & Round Islands. Our goal is to walk the shore of both islands, collecting refuse. Michael Daugherty will guide this free trip; included are boats & padding gear. If desired, wetsuits or dry suits are available to rent. No paddling experience needed, but plan on paddling 8 to 10 miles & walking up to 2 miles. If you would like to do clean up but not paddle, there is a small boat going out that can hold 6 people. Call IHT, 348-2455, to register. Enrollment is limited; please sign-up early. Clean up on along island coastlines is an important part of keeping our oceans and lands healthy, if you can't make this trip but do get out to other local islands, send up a picture of yourself and your bag of trash from this summer and we will proudly post you up on our wall of beach cleaners. Owned by Maine Coast Heritage Trust, Marshall offers miles of trails through diverse habitat. Tom Wessels, a terrestrial ecologist and founding director of the University New England at Antioch’s master’s degree in Conservation Biology, will give a slide lecture on his new book, The Myth of Progress: Toward a Sustainable Future. In his book, Tom demonstrates how our current path toward progress, based on continual economic expansion and inefficient use of resources, runs absolutely contrary to three foundational scientific laws that govern all complex natural systems. Plan to walk the rough perimeter trail around the 85-acre island learning about the abundant natural history on this “big, robust and wild” island. Cox will discuss a history of the areas original inhabitants and one of the area’s most unusual finds: a European found buried in full armor on Campbell. Kathie Fiveash, a lifelong naturalist who lives on Isle au Haut, has written a natural history column for the Island AdVantages newspaper since 2010.
