Retrofit Experience
Over the years, our experience has shown that in many cases the
repair of a vessel’s turbocharger is not cost efficient and more
importantly is not reliable for the safe operation of the vessel. The
engine’s turbocharger (T/C) in a vessel often due to various reasons
such as poor fuel’s composition or slow streaming of the vessel fails to
operate efficiently. This leads to recurring repairs and increased fuel
consumptions.
In these cases the best and most appropriate solution is the
replacement of the old turbocharger model (retrofit) with a new unit
of more modern technology that results in improved fuel consumption
and exhaust gas temperatures before and after the T/C. The life
expectance of the T/C also increases.
Turbomed, through many years of experience in the turbocharger
technology and by being continuously updated on the latest
technological developments, can responsibly upgrade the turbocharger
old formulas with ones of the latest technology.
Retrofit Process
In order to suggest a successful retrofit
solution our engineers collect the engine’s
and T/C’s data along with photos that show
the connection of the two. After careful
study and analysis they decide on the T/C’s
coupling and mechanical adaptation to the
engine. Any specifications needed on the
nozzle ring and diffuser, are being
considered in this process.
When the turbocharger is ready, it is being
packaged and shipped to its destination.
The service technicians are responsible for
uninstalling the old model, making any
modifications needed on the connecting
parts and installing the new turbocharger.

KBB on Retrofit
KBB, with a vast experience in
turbochargers technology over
the last 60 years, offers retrofit
opportunities for two and four
stroke diesel and gas engines
in the power range of 500 to
4800 kW per turbo.
KBB’s R&D department has a
substantial
industrial
experience in the development
of the turbocharger by using
modern CAD - technology and
software tools. In the process
of manufacture, CNC technology is applied to
ensure the highest quality of
the components.
New KBB series
For diesel, heavy fuel and gas engines KBB offers the following two
types of turbochargers
 HPR SERIES. This 6th generation series of turbochargers has
a power range from 500 to 3000 kW and a maximum pressure
ration of 5. Some of the advantages of these turbochargers are
the high efficiency and pressure ratio, the simple and compact
design and the long lifetime of the components
 ST SERIES. This 7th generation series of turbochargers has a
power range from 500 to 4800 kW and a maximum pressure
ration of 5.5. Some of the advantages of these turbochargers
are the high efficiency and pressure ratio, the improved surge
margin and the water cooled bearing housing
Modification kit
Turbomed can supply any spare parts needed in retrofit and also design and manufacture the
required modification kit including all connection pipes and flanges for air/exhaust gas
inlet/outlet etc.
