(above) Toshiko Kobiki Sensei lectures on nishuike and futakabu-ike. The Japan House tea
garden can be seen in the background on this
beautiful fall day. Sensei's suiriku-ike (below)
On the cover:
A snowy blanket covers the yew but the coral bark
Japanese maple bravely fights for spring.
Ilinois Prairie Chapter Student Works
Using cattail and/or maple and iris or lizianthus four
completely different shoka come alive...
Middle: Members pay close attention to Kokibi Sensei's points
of correction. This is a valuable time during class when you can
really learn a lot.
Right : Member Patty Nisbet from Madison Wisconsin poses
with her nishu-ike using riku-mono (land materials)
Below Left: Marc-Anthony Macon's nishu-ike using sui-mono
(water materials) .. although cattail is tsuyo-mono or both land
and water and Dutch iris is technically land material, but we
sometimes pretend, since kakitsubata is not found in these parts!
Below middle: Jeanne Holy's suiriku-ike variation with soe as
land material in meka-bu, requiring both shin-za and tai-za.
Below Right: Betty Lankford's classic and beautiful gyodo-ike
2014 is the year of the horse
Freestyle Containers
At our jiyuka workshop Professor Kobiki showed how to
make some creative freestyle containers.
(below) First she cut the top off a small water bottle. Next
she sliced the top inch or so like an apple peel and inserted
that partly into the plastic bottle as a way to hold the
flowers, with some remaining outside as a decoration.
Very cute and a great idea for kids of all ages.
(right) A beautiful hanging arrangement made with a place
mat, pretty paper, sushi roller, piece of bamboo and tiny
basket. Simple ingredients to find, lovely ikebana to make.
Other interesting freestyle containers included
(above) Member Ann Chan uses stunning hand
made glass – made my husband Umberto
Ravaioli (must be nice Ann!)
(left) A hand made ceramic container reflected
nicely by Aurora Villacorta's arrangement.

New Membership Fees
Ikenobo America dues has increased membership fees for the first time since 2008 to $30 for regular members
(increase of $5) and $50 for teachers (an increase of $20.) Membership benefits will include the Hana no
Arakaruto magazine, 10% discount on Ikenobo goods and the opportunity to attend Special Visiting Professor
workshops. Ikenobo calenders will no longer be included but may be ordered for an additional fee. This fall we
will have information on the cost and how to order.
There is also the the addition of a special membership available to teachers with a rank of 9 or higher; Kakyo,
assistant professor third grade. The fee is $100 and includes the regular benefits of membership as well as the
calendar, and the opportunity to attend advanced teaching workshops. Any members who qualifies for the
special membership is encouraged to apply, as it will help insure continued success of Ikenobo Ikebana. If you
have any questions concerning membership please contact Jeanne.
At our January meeting the group consensus was to set local dues at $20, to be waived for seniors (70+), and
students. Our goal is to maintain our current members and encourage new members. To this end anyone who
may find the new fees difficult to manage, scholarships are available. Just contact Jeanne. Also if you know
someone that may enjoy learning about ikebana bring them to a workshop as your guest, or arrange flowers
together and encourage them to join. Together let's make 2014 successful for Ikenobo Ikebana in America!
