Re: 2009/2012 IRC Compliant Spacing for a Sawn Lumber Deck Ledger to Band Joist with 100
PSF Live Load and 10 PSF Dead Load
Simpson Strong-Tie Company now manufactures three fastener types that are suitable for installing
ledgers and meet the current requirements of the building codes. Each fastener installs easily, does
not require predrilling and has a double barrier coating providing corrosion resistance equivalent to hot
dip galvanization. The attached table meets the prescriptive ledger attachment solutions equivalent to
Table R502.2.2.1 of the 2009 IRC and Table R507.2 of the 2012 IRC.

Solid Sawn band joists shall be Spruce-Pine-Fir, Hem-Fir, Douglas Fir-Larch, or Southern Pine species. Ledger shall
be Hem-Fir, Douglas Fir-Larch, or Southern Pine species.
Fastener spacing are based on the lesser of single fastener ICC-ES AC233 testing of the fastener with F.S. of 5.0 or
ICC-ES AC13 ledger assembly testing with a F.S. of 5.0. Spacing includes NDS wet service factor adjustment.
Multiple ledger plies shall be fastened together per code independent of the SDS, SDWS or SDWH screws listed in
the table above.
Screws shall be placed at least 1½” from the top or bottom of the ledger or band joist, 6” from the end of the
ledger with 3” between rows and spaced per the table. End screws shall be located near the bottom of the ledger
(see figure). For end distances between 2" and 6", use 50% of the load and 50% of the table spacing between the
end screw and the adjacent screw. For end distances between 2" and 4", predrill using a 5/32" drill bit for SDS and
SDWS screws and a 1/8” drill bit for SDWH screws.
Structural sheathing between the ledger and band shall be a maximum of ½” thick and fastened per code.
