John is a leading global expert in
obesity and obesity treatment across
the broad spectrum. He is a NHMRC
senior research fellow and is currently
Head of Clinical Obesity Research at
Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Research
in Melbourne where he also heads up
the Baker IDI Weight Assessment and
Management Clinic.
He is an adjunct professor at the
School of Primary Health Care, Monash University. With
a background as a rural primary care physician, his
generalist approach has enabled research across specialist
boundaries.
He is a respected international leader in endocrine, liver,
respiratory, nutritional, obstetric, psychological and other
aspects of obesity as well as the effects of weight loss on
these related conditions.
Professor Dixon has over 200 publications in quality peer
reviewed journals. He is listed in 3 world rankings on
Expertscape, a research database that ranks persons and
institutions according to their demonstrated expertise in
specific medical diseases, conditions, and treatments using
PubMed indexation over the past 10 years.
In the field of bariatrics (activities related to weight
reduction in patients with obesity with treatment
methods including diet, exercise, behaviour modification,
medications and bariatric surgery) he is ranked #1, in
obesity #13 and morbid obesity #3.

Dr Leah Brennan, Psychologist - The Alfred Hospital,
Researcher, Centre for Obesity Research and Education,
Monash University.
Leah Brennan is a clinical and health
psychologist. In 2009 she joined the
School of Psychology, Psychiatry and
Psychological Medicine at Monash
University as a lecturer in the Doctor
of Clinical Psychology Program.
Leah’s research interests involve
the application of psychological
approaches to understand, prevent
and treat obesity and disordered
eating (including eating disorders) in children, adolescents
and adults.
She is particularly interested in development, evaluation
and dissemination of evidence-based interventions for
the treatment of obesity, disordered eating and eating
disorders.
Leah also has an interest in the importance of health
behaviours for psychological wellbeing, and the
relationship between physical and psychological health.
The role of parents in the promotion of healthy lifestyles in
children is also a strong research interest.
Christine Colavetti, Deputy Director Physiotherapy,
The Prince Charles Hospital
Christine’s research has investigated how to mobilize the
bariatric patient and ensure the safety of this process for
patients and staff.
Her presentation aims to stimulate lateral thinking in
clinicians and provide food for thought on how to approach
mobility decisions.
It challenges usual practices and encourages analysis
and utilization of clinical risk management skills in the
adaptation to individual movement needs.
professional education he has conducted a large number
of courses and workshops on the management of obesity
and diabetes both nationally and internationally over the
past 10 years. He has a busy schedule as an invited speaker
in the areas of obesity, obesity comorbidity (particularly
diabetes and obstructive sleep apnoea) and weight loss.
He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of Obesity
Australia, was president of the Australian and New Zealand
Obesity Society (2007-2009) and is an executive member of
the Obesity Surgery Society of Australia and New Zealand.
He is an associate editor of Surgery for Obesity and Related
Diseases (SOARD), Obesity Surgery, and Clinical Obesity and
is on the editorial boards of Nutrition and Diabetes, Bariatric
News and Diabesity in Practice.
