My background is in industrial design and I have been focusing on user research, User Centered Design, and Human Computer Interaction in recent years. I am currently an assistant professor at Izmir Institute of Technology and I am teaching Human Computer Interaction, Product Innovation, and Design Research courses for master students who enrolled in the industrial design program. In my previous professional experience, I worked as an interaction designer at FMC Technologies in Asker, Norway for a period of 3 months. Some experts believe that they can change the future of money. Users around the world have different approaches towards money and banking systems are quite diverse. Therefore, these services usually need to be customized according to the special context of use in each country. This concept is designed by using minimal and flat visual elements. The features are defined based on common banking tasks in Turkey. An interactive prototype is available here. 10 One of my main responsibilities was to design visual elements such as symbols and icons for FMC FlowManager™ software. I also should plan and conduct usability tests according to the most recent developments in the software. Another responsibility of mine was developing wire-frames, prototypes and scenarios of use for the future applications using indigo studio. Interaction Design [2] FMC Technologies—2013 Flow Manager™ is a multi-phase flow simulator for online systems that enables users to perform surveillance, optimization and prediction of sub-sea oil and gas production. One of the main challenges in this project was proper design of different visual elements. Icons and symbols of Flow Manager™ should represent subsea components, network components, mathematical equations and logical functions. Representing these complex technical features by tiny visual elements was not easy, specially because these visual elements should be understood quickly by users from different disciplines. I designed more than 300 visual elements during my career at FMC Technologies. Since the software is not officially launched, I am not able to add screen shots of final design. In addition you can find an attestation in the next page. 11 12 Before starting my PhD, I had some experiences in product design, and I was always interested in understanding users in their own cultural context. I found that similar technologies might be used differently in different places, and this was the start point of developing a PhD proposal with following specifications: User Research PhD project— 2008-2013 Topic: Country- specific customization of mobile applications Scopes : Standard applications of smart phones, two emerging markets of Iran and Turkey, first-time users of smart phones, and Innovative users (users who adapt technologies faster than others). Although most urban elements are made by simple manufacturing technologies, these products are complex in terms of the social context of use. Understanding the local users’ needs, identity of the city, local manufacturers , climate , and social behaviors such as vandalism were among the most important factors in design projects at Urban Elements unit. In addition, field studies and observations were the permanent parts of all projects . Among the designs, the donation box can be an interesting sample. While charity donation boxes are not common objects in the West, they can be seen frequently in the streets of cities in Iran. From concept to prototype From concept to prototype Charity donation box 15 Product Design [1] MSc thesis—Personal Digital Partner—2006 The title of my MSc thesis was Personal Digital Partner. This was a conceptual title for a multifunctional digital device which was able to change according the context of use. The design process was influenced by Object Oriented thinking paradigm , and the product, its components, and its use cases were “logically” modeled. More details about the design process is available in a paper entitled: Application of Object Oriented Thinking in Product Design: Design Process of Personal Digital Partner Two design concepts were created in the final phase of the design. One of these design concepts (Zodiac) was selected as a finalist in Toshiba Hard Disc drive Revolution Competition. Of course, these designs should be evaluated considering the time that they were created :2006. Finalist in Toshiba Hard Disc Drive Revolution design competition , 2006. 17 Product Design [2] Mobile Hospital— Selected Project in the16th annual industrial design exhibition of University of Tehran—2005 18 This project was done for Project 3 MSc course at University of Tehran. In 2003, a major earthquake struck Bam and the surrounding Kerman province of southeastern Iran. Problems in transporting , installing and using mobile hospitals which were mostly based on inflatable shelters or ordinary tents highlighted the need for mobile hospitals with solid walls that can be installed easily. This small snow mobile was designed to be used in Touchal, a ski run near Tehran. I developed the initial sketches and then worked on a 1:1 scale plaster model. The plaster model was then transformed to a fiberglass body by a composite materials expert to finalize the prototype.
