ST.PETERSBURG” TOUR

Millionnaya 32 (www.rarebook-spb.ru)
“Rare Book of St. Petersburg” publishing house was found in
1991 by a group of adherent book-lovers. Every book which
has been published since 1991 is nothing but an art piece. All
books are printed manually on a 19th century printing press, or hand-written on hand-made paper and
they are made in very limited number. Sometimes the number of copies amounts up to 10 exemplars.
The variety of art works to be published covers wide range from the Bible and the Upanishads to
modern classic. Among materials which are used to produce such kinds of unique objects are precious
sorts of wood, vellum, silver and gold, rare natural colors, precious stones, exquisite fabrics and
porcelain.
Cost: Donation of 300 rub per person
Number of participants: 10 persons maximum
Duration: 1 hour
If you are interested in attending the Tour, reply to [email protected] by Thursday, 5 June 2014.
NEW!!!! VALENKI BOOTS FACTORY TOUR
Tuesday 17th June 2014 – 09:00am
Valenki are a traditional style of Russian boots made of wool felt.
They keep feet insulated from snow and cold and are said to have
healing properties associated with the way the boots naturally
warm and massage the feet. Special galoshes that fit over valenki
allow them to be used even in wet weather and in cities – the
waterproof rubber creates necessary traction and prevents
moisture from soaking into the wool felt. The first valenki to be
developed were expensive, and so only the wealthy – tsars and the
nobility – could afford to own them. However, the wearing of valenki
trickled down to the lower classes, who might have shared a pair of valenki among family members or
purchased them in lieu of more expensive footwear for the winter.
The Tour includes visit to the factory and their shop where we can buy boots, wool socks, vests and
other woolen items.
Participants: min. 10 – max. 30 persons
Duration: 4 hours apprx. (depending on the traffic)
Cost: from 10-18 persons 800 rub/person. 19-30 persons 680 rub/person. The price includes transportation with a
minibus.
If you are interested in attending the tour, reply to [email protected] by Wednesday, 11 June 2014.

interrupted the process of building and Benois Wing was
completed only in 1919. The Benois Wing was handed over
to the State Russian Museum in the early 1930’s. Since that time

(Palace of Chancellor Vorontsov)
Tuesday, 24 June 2014 – 12:00pm

The Vorontsov Palace is a Baroque palace compound which
occupies a large parcel of land. The palace of 50 rooms was
built at enormous expense by F.Rastrelli for Count Mikhail
Illarionovich Vorontsov, Empress Elizabeth’s chancellor and maternal relative. The palace took 8 years
to build, starting in 1749. In 1798-1800 a Catholic chapel is added to serve exiled French aristocrats
who resided in St.Petersburg at the turn of the 19th century. Since 1810 the Vorontsov Palace has

PUSHKIN’S BIRTHDAY
Born in 1799 Pushkin’s still holds Russia in his sway. Children still learn his poems at
school, foreign students finally feel like they know Russian when they are able to
read his stories and poetry.
Pushkin was both a romantic and a revolutionary. He is most famous for his poem
Eugene Onegin (Евгений Онегин) and The Captain’s Daughter. Steeped in the
spirit of romanticism Pushkin fought 29 duels before being slain in the prime of his
writing career when he was only 37. Honour Russia’s bard by visiting his museum
or going to a literary reading – but learn from his death and steer clear of
dueling!

February 1725) ruled the Tsardom of Russia and later the Russian Empire from 7
May 1682 until his death, jointly ruling before 1696 with his half-brother. In
numerous successful wars he expanded the Tsardom into a huge empire that
became a major European power. He led a cultural revolution that replaced
some of the traditionalist and medieval social and political system with a
modern, scientific, Europe-oriented, and rationalist system.
The formal Imperial title of Peter the Great was quite long.
25TH JULY 2014
NAVY DAY
St. Petersburg was founded as a port city and 25 July is the day when the city
celebrates its thousands of naval officers. Typically the celebrations take place
along the Neva near the Winter Palace and Admiralty where a whole flotilla of
warships decked in flags will be on display and the shipscrews will be out
partying and meeting with friends and family. The historic naval base of
Kronshtadt in the north of the city will also have special parades and chances
to look around the warships. As usual and in spite of the obvious lack of darkness
at this time of year there will no doubt be a fireworks display! Expect plenty of10
rowdiness.
