Guildford scoops Silver Gilt at
South & South East in Bloom
“Enthusiastic
community groups and
local businesses
helped us achieve this
success”
We are delighted that
Guildford has been awarded
Silver Gilt at this year's South
East in Bloom competition.
Cllr Jen Powell, Chairman of
the Guildford in Bloom
Committee, was awarded the
Outstanding
Achievement
Award for her hard work as
Chairman
since
1987.
She said: "We are extremely
proud
to
have
such
enthusiastic
community
groups, local businesses and
a dedicated team at Guildford
Borough working so hard to
help
us
achieve
this
success”.
The
hanging
baskets and floral displays
around the town, as well as
the
well-designed castle
grounds, and war memorial
planting, were among the
highlights that led to the town
receiving
this
award.
The judges were particularly
taken with the 'impressive
castle grounds' and they
commented that Guildford is
'a tidy and colourful town with
lots of history and interest’.

Year-Round Calendar Activities
Over the past year the
Guildford in Bloom Committee have been busy talking to
businesses, volunteers, gardeners, press and other associations about the Guildford in Bloom Competition.
We have strengthened our
links with the community and
involved them in various projects.
We are continuing to encourage local businesses to get
involved and our main sponsor, Keith Churchouse from
Chapter’s Financial and Experience Guildford, has been
very supportive.
Two of the committee were
invited to join the Radio 2
broadcast—’Dig It’.
On 23 April, St Georges Day,
we had a stall at the Farmers
Market.
On 7 June, Guildford in
Bloom supported the unveiling of the Carpet Bed at the
Castle Grounds. The theme
was World War 1 and the
Mayor cut the golden ribbon
symbolizing
Britain
in
Bloom’s 50th Anniversary.
In 2015 we would like to build on
previous success and continue to
improve our town, plant more floral
displays, generate more sponsorship and increase the number of
volunteers around the town.
We need your support to help us
achieve this. If you would like to
get involved then please contact:
[email protected]
or telephone 01483 444715
We had a stall at the Surrey
County Show and one of the
Guildford in Bloom Committee helped out as a volunteer
at the Hampton Court and
Chelsea Flower Shows.
Next Year’s Competition—We need
more Business Sponsorship
Businesses have a really
important part to play in
Guildford in Bloom. This was
very evident in some of the
shop window displays that
we saw this year and the
increased
floral displays
outside the pubs.
With more business involvement we can make Guildford
a
very
attractive
and
desirable location in which to
live and work.
