Pine Mountain Posse Wild
Bunch Match
The Wild Bunch Venue in Cowboy Action
Shooting (CAS) is based on the 1969 Movie of the
same name directed by Sam Peckinpah, and
starring William Holden, Robert Ryan, Ernest
Borgnine, Ben Johnson, and Warren Oates. The
CAS version of the game requires the shooter to
use lever action rifles in Caliber 40 or larger,
Shotguns such as the 97 Pump, and the 1911 45
ACP or Clones thereof. Participants are
encouraged to wear military outfits of that period
(see photo below), but not required to participate.
Our local Wild Bunch Guru is Sunrise Bill, who
hosted the May 10th and 11th match at the COSSA
Range. Participants using rifles in calibers smaller
than 40 are called “Wannabe’s,” and are not
considered in competition for Category Titles—
instead they are permitted to compete simply for
the fun of it. A concession considered very astute
by many.
THE WANNABE MATCH
Mother Nature tried her best to discourage
shooting on Saturday, May 10th by bringing some
unexpected snow to the range. However, with all
due respect to Mother Nature, she probably forgot
how determined Wild Bunch Shooters are, so
ignoring a rather cold start the shoot went on to be
a great success. Ten Stages were shot over the two
day weekend. In addition to the stages, Bill
organized a “Pistol Challenge,” requiring the
Shooter to knock down 23 targets with an allotted
25 rounds. Yuma Colorado, SASS#4533, one of
Oregon’s pioneer SASS members won this event
by knocking down all 23 with 2 rounds to spare.
An impressive factor about WB Shooting is the
posse team work that develops as the shoot
progresses. Picking up Brass for example becomes
triple the task of Cowboy Action
Shooting because the 1911’s spit out 15 rounds
(on the average), while the cowboy revolvers retains
within the 10 rounds normally fired. As we know, those
15 rounds of 1911’s go all over the place requiring a
great deal of time to retrieve them, and unless the posse
works together, “brass retrieval time,” combined with resetting Shotgun Targets can take up a great deal of time.
In this regard, Sunrise Bill had plenty of knowledgeable
posse help from local shooters such as: Coho Kid,
SASS#16095 (owner of Ted Blocker Holsters), Lil Italy,
SASS#86063, Deadwood Pete, SASS#57450, Shevlin
Kid, SASS#72550, Pecos Bill Corrigan, SASS#79317,
Huckleberry Hickok, SASS#88886, Dakota Dell,
SASS#33067, Street Howitzer, SASS#79888, Wild Bill
Badlands, SASS#92327, Waco Bill, and The Legend,
SASS#36069.
Finally, where would we be in WB and Cowboy
Action Shooting without the help of the Distaff side of
the house? We would be at a loss, brother, a big, big
loss. So, as in all our shoots, we give a big “Thank
You,” to our Score Keepers and Photo Takers: Diamond
Willow, SASS#37688, Sierra Sage Sue, SASS#57487,
Stargazer Sal, SASS#57411, and Gdub, SASS#98435—
thank you ladies!

Central Oregon Precision
Riflemen (COPR) Update
The COPR prone high power prone clinic
conducted March 29-30 on the John Nosler 1,000
yard range was a resounding success thanks to
Don Crigler. Don did a fantastic job organizing
the clinic, recruiting instructors and shooters, and
assisting on the line. Don is a very experienced
NRA Master level high power rifleman and his
experience was apparent while listening to him
coach shooters. As of June 1st, Don will no longer
be directing the NRA High Power / Palma
disciplines. Don is responsible for getting our
current High Power programs to where they are
now. We are very appreciative of Don’s
dedication and hard work. Don with the help of
other interested High Power shooters will
continue to help and run the High Power matches.
Walt Angle has willingly stepped up to assume
the COPR directorship of the NRA High Power
and Palma disciplines on the John Nosler 1000
yard range. Thanks to the dedication of numerous
individuals, COSSA has a premier facility for
NRA Full bore, Palma, and F Class shooting. If
you have ever wanted to stretch the legs of that
hunting rifle, F class mid and long range may be
something you’d like to try. It will make you a
better rifleman hence a better hunter. F Class and
F/TR mid range will let you know, in black and
white, just what your rifle and ammunition is
capable of at longer range hunting distances. As
the saying goes, “paper doesn’t lie.” As a side
bonus, you’ll get the opportunity to hang out with
some very friendly and knowledgeable folks in
both the shooting aspects of a precision rifle and
precision reloading.
The Central Oregon Precision Riflemen are
planning a great match schedule starting this
spring. Please check out our website at:
www.oregonshooting.com/copr for the 2 Gun and
NRA High Power match schedule. We plan on
several two gun (carbine-pistol) matches. Our
carbine / pistol matches will be great practice for
you 3gunners. Additionally, two gun competition
is a great way to break into the multi gun shooting
sports. So, don’t be intimidated and come out and
shoot with us! Two gun stages will be designed
for you to succeed and have fun. We are also
planning on several mid range matches (300, 500,
600 yards) throughout the summer. NRA approval
forms have been submitted. Check the COPR
website for match dates and times.
One of the big COPR matches this calendar year
will be The Oregon Tactical Rifle Championships
on September 6-7, 2014. This championship level
precision rifle match will be conducted over eight
stages at COSSA. The stages will be designed on
challenging terrain with steel targets posted in the
350-1000 yard range, with an average in the 400600 yard ranges. Again, visit our website for match
information and registration. For further
information on any of the COPR programs and
matches please contact us. We look forward to you
joining us.

work parties during the week and have had input

Lewis will be heading up the weekday parties as
before and Walt Angle will hold weekend work
parties. The dates are on the monthly calendar and
they start at 9 AM, bring a lunch. So far we have
held 2 weekday work parties and they were
announced on the monthly calendar. However, for
both work parties, only one member showed up.
Where are you guys that wanted the work parties
on the weekends? We have a lot of work to do to

2. GUEST AND VISITOR FEES- According to
our sign in books at the kiosks at both gates
COSSA is not receiving the fees required for
guests and visitors. The last couple of pickups of
the fees and the sign in sheets have been short by
50% or more. If you are a member taking guests
out to the range it is not fair for you to let people
in without paying the fee. If you do not feel
comfortable asking for the fee then put it in
yourself. All of the fees taken in go for upkeep or
improvement of the range. We are looking into
getting an electronic gate so you will not have to

Howdy PardsWe are super excited to announce that the Pine Mt. Posse will be involved in the Sisters Wild West Show again
this year, to be held August 23 & 24. We will be looking for fun-teers (volunteers) again to play townies,
drunks, floozy's or drunk floozy's. LOL There will be three shows again at Noon, 1 and 2pm both Saturday and
Sunday, come for one day or both! It was a ton of fun last year for both the actors and the audience.
Even more exciting the PMP fun-teers will be a part of the Central Oregon Wild West Show to be held over
Labor Day Weekend, August 29, 30 & 31st with one Show on Friday, two shows on Saturday and one show on
Sunday. We will be able to dry camp at the Fair grounds for free, let us know if you are interested in
participating in this re-enactment.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact Stonewood Kid at 541-678-2566 or Dave Peterson at 541480-2255. Please send Arctic Annie an email at [email protected] if you want to be put on the Funteers list, be sure to include which or both event you wish to participate in.
Thank you again, we look forward to having a ton of fun, camping, acting out and "shooting the town up",
dinner out in our finest old west garb and a Cowboy fire or two.
Thanks for your participation last year, we really hope to see you this year!
