PRODUCTS TRAIL DEBRIS PRODUCT REVIEW AVANTI/SCOTT ‘15 LAUNCH GARMIN VIRB ELITE Late in June we headed over to Melbourne, Australia to check out the latest offerings from Avanti and Scott. Naturally we were excited as it was chucking it down with rain at home and heading across the ditch sounded nice - but this was Melbourne and upon landing it was blowing a gale and colder than NZ! However, we didn’t go for the weather and we are not complaining (just saying) as we couldn’t wait to see the new 2015 range from Avanti and Scott. Let’s kick it off with our own Kiwi brand Avanti; we had heard some rumours of a revised Torrent series, and to be honest, we couldn’t wait to see the next evolution. We weren’t disappointed with what we found. A major point of difference is that Avanti got their carbon game on with not one, but two carbon models plus a carbon frame set! These models have a carbon front end paired with an aluminium rear, the frame looks great and comes with a PF30 bottom bracket shell and a Syntace X12 rear axle. Both the CS carbon models come rigged with a FOX CTD Evolution series shock. 1. 2. 5. 6. Scott has also made some adjustments to their size offerings depending on the wheel size; the trending 27.5” wheel size will be offered in small, medium and large and the 29” wheel size will be offered in medium, large and extra-large. Scott says this is to ensure that they are offering the best frame and wheel size for the rider. PLACE YA BETS - SCOTT DH GAMBLER 27.5 Bikes aside, Scott has been working on its Multidirectional Impact Protection System (MIPS) helmets setting new standards in safety. Basically the helmet has been developed by brain surgeons and scientists to reduce rotational forces on the brain caused by angled impacts to your head. When you take a knock, a small shell and liner is separated by a low friction layer, this helps the helmet to slide relative to the position of your head. TORRENT S 7.1 DECKED OUT WITH X-FUSION SHOCK AND FORKS THE VERSATILE GAMBLER HIT THE CHIP TO DUMP THE BB BY 10MM SCOTT STEGO WITH MIPS YOUR NOGGIN NEEDS PROTECTING. Scott will have the Stego (pictured) available in October and we hope to get our hands on one before then – so watch out for the review in upcoming issues. 15 www.nzmtbr.co.nz Trail Debris (news section) NZMTBR066 Please extend my current subscription. OK, so the latest GoPro Hero 3+ Black has 4K resolution, but the files are huge so you’ll need a big bag of memory cards and then have to scale the files down to watch them on 99% of home computers and TVs. The GoPro, however, does have 2.7K recording and picture quality which is definitely crisper than that of the VIRB Elite. 16. 32 1. We’d call it an All Mountain or Enduro bike, despite GT recently releasing a new Sanction which is intended to be the pro’s Enduro bike - we noted GT’s Enduro junior athlete Martin Maes leaving his Sanction in the pits and taking the Force X at the Tweed Valley round of the Enduro World Series. There’s a lot going on down at the AOS suspension part of town, with three pivots all crammed in down by the bottom bracket (and another out by the rear dropouts). Everything is big and sturdy, with widely spaced 15mm pivots and pinch bolts keeping the whole package together. It is a bit of a mud-trap down there (and we think it’s crying out for a grease port to take care of the two water-prone pivots on the Pathlink), though there is plenty of tyre clearance and the included shock-guard means the shock stays as clean as a whistle. The matt paint is a bit of a pain to keep clean though (Sard wonder soap seemed best!). We noted a lack of protection on the driveside chainstay and seat-stay, which is a bit of an oversight on a carbon frame like RRP $7,999 SIZE(S) S, M, L, XL this, especially as the chain makes a racket on the right seat stay unless something (like duct tape, or the fuzzy part of velcro) is attached to the inside of the seatstay. BITS Fox’s Float X CTD adjust is mated with a Fox 34 open-bath Evolution series fork. Shimano’s SLX provides the shifters, clutch rear derailleur and cassette, which are mixed with a Race Face 22/36 crankset and KMC chain to take care of the gears. The brakes are Formula RX models. GT All Terra branded hubs with tall flanges allow for increased triangulation and shorter, stiffer spokes. They’re laced to WTB I23 rims, on top of which sit Continental’s big 2.4 Mountain King tyres. Kore bars and stem sit up front, while a KS Lev internally routed post is the icing on the cake. FIT/SET UP The Force X is very much of the ‘long top tube so you can use a short stem’ school of thought, and we like that a lot. Testers who would previously have ridden a large now find themselves with the option of riding the medium too, which is what we did. Mated to that short stem are wide 760mm bars and a short head tube to keep the bars low. In terms of suspension setup, the frame’s included sag-guide is not much use - the difference between 20% and 35% is about 1mm on the guide, and it’s impossible to see when you are on the bike. It’s also pretty hard to get into the shock shaft and measure it - we used a cut down zip tie, but after some experimentation found it was better to assess pressure by riding it, checking how close you get to full travel on your gnarliest trails and assessing the overall feel. 29 29 INCH WHEELS COLOUR(S) Trek Black/Viper Red COLOUR(S) Mariner Blue / Mag White FRAME MATERIAL Carbon Fibre • TRAVEL F/R (MM) 100/100 • SHOCK Fox Evolution Float CTD • FORK Fox 32 Float CTD Evo • CRANKSET Shimano XT • BRAKES Shimano XT • SHIFTERS Shimano XT FRONT DER. So far the wheels are as straight and true as the day we got them and the the Japanese bearings are as smooth as any bearing I’ve felt. They’re every bit as good as the Spank Spike wheelset we had a while ago - just think of these as their younger, lighter brother. We’re going to hold onto the Oozy Trail 295 Bead Bites for a bit longer to see how they stand up to the rest of the winter’s riding, so will do a follow-up on this review at the end of winter. WHAT YOU GET: Never miss an issue! The helmet mount is attached with straps which personally I found to be fiddly and difficult to secure, luckily zip ties work just fine. The bike mounts are rock solid and come with a variety of sleeve sizes for different size tubes and handle bars. I found the chest harness to be a nuisance and really unnecessary with all the other options Battery life is an on-going issue for these sorts of cameras (just like smartphones). The latest GoPro’s battery will last a couple of hours in most circumstances. The VIRB Elite will operate for an hour longer than that. We’ve ridden the Oozy Trail 295 Bead Bite wheelset for the last four weeks on a 6” trail bike and noticed the drop in weight straight away. We did, however, also notice a bit more flex compared to our previous wheelset - admittedly a notably stiff wheelset. The wider rim meant we could get the Minions down to around 23-27 PSI without the feeling of the sidewall folding. The extra grip made the wet winter trails feel infinitely less treacherous. The camera clips quickly and securely into a cradle that attaches to the mounts. Also, there is a range of optional, extra VIRB mounts available for attaching the camera to your helmet or bike as well as a chest and shoulder harness. available. Following on from last year’s Oozy wheelset, which had a 28-hole, straight pull, 3 cross lacing pattern, Spank have now added a wider, 29.5 mm (previously 26 mm) outer width rim to give the tyre more support at lower pressures. Spank have managed to get the new model to within a few miniscule grams of the old one at 1700 grams for a pair of 27.5” wheels. The Oozy rim is a tubeless ready design and we managed to get Spank’s own tubeless tape and valves, which were simple to apply. Once I fitted the tubeless ready Maxxis Minions (which were a tight fit I might add), they beaded up with ease with just a floor pump. I was impressed with how well the tyres sealed up thanks to the Bead Bite feature. Bead Bite, by the way, is a couple of small ridges in the inner well of the rim, just inside the rim wall, which keeps the tyre bead locked into place. The Bead Bite worked really well I never managed to burp the tubeless setup at all. The hubs can be converted to fit most of the axle standards with simple pop-in-and-out adaptors. It’s worth noting these wheels are hand built, with triple butted spokes and alloy nipples so you are probably going to get a nicer, stronger wheelset than machine built. Address________________________________________ ______________________________________________ The VIRB Elite is rubberised, sturdy and water resistant. If you want to use it underwater at more than a metre for more than 30 minutes, however, you’ll need to pay extra for the optional waterproof case (something that is standard with all GoPros). Spank have managed to get the weight, strength and price ratio just right with all the previous wheelsets we have tested and they’ve done it again with their new Oozy Trail 295 Bead Bite wheelset. Jumping on the wider-rim-but-still-lightweight bandwagon, Spank have reintroduced their Oozy wheelset in all three wheel sizes - it’s good to see Spank not giving up on 26” just yet. The VIRB Elite is a well-balanced little unit which is easy to hold and there is no chance of getting fingers in shot, even in wide, ultra-zoom mode. The default settings of the VIRB Elite are wide-shot lensing for video and stills at 1080p resolution. A bike that was grabbing plenty of attention at the launch was the Scott DH Gambler. As you can tell by the image, the paint job definitely stands out and you will not be missed as you’re hucking off a rock face. The new 2015 Gambler shifts to the trendy 27.5” wheel size and a lower bottom bracket. A lower positioned bottom bracket across the range gives the bikes better stability and control. Keeping up with the trend towards wider hoops, the Torrent range comes equipped with DT1700 wheels on the CS 7.2 model, DT1900s on the CS 7.1 model and Mavic 421 rims (with UST rim tape) on the S 7.2 model. Kenda’s Honey Badgers are on tyre duties across the board. 14 Straight out of the box, the controls and menu are intuitive and easy to use. Miniaturisation of the latest GoPro means they’ve abandoned an on-camera viewfinder in favour of viewing camera output on a smartphone via WiFi. The VIRB still has an in-built viewfinder and that’s not a bad thing when setting up a shot or While the rear shock still looks the same, the Fox Nude CTCD shock has been completely redesigned, with the TwinLoc lever now mounted directly on the clamp of the grip. This model was previously only available by special order, but that’s all about to change as this year all models will be available. We suspect that this decision was based on the ever-increasing Enduro scene in this part of the world. We’ll be bringing you our views on how it rides as soon as we can get our leg over the bar! GENIUS LTS, COMING TO OUR SHORES SOON. We recently reviewed the Torrent (NZMTBR issue #64) and whilst we found it great to ride we did have a few complaints about the fork and wheels. It looks like they have them dialled in with the new revisions. Avanti have upped the ante with the travel which has been stepped up to 150mm in the front and rear across the line-up. The Torrent also comes with a slacker head angle (66.5 degrees) and a 5mm longer top tube. Up front suspension duties go to the Marzocchi 350 CR fork for the Torrent S 7.2 and X-Fusion for the Torrent S 7.1. PRICE: $649 ($449 FOR THE VIRB NON-ELITE) • DISTRIBUTED BY: GARMIN NZ There is a new name in the helmet camera market and it’s a well-known one. Last year Garmin, of GPS fame, announced their VIRB range. While in Melbourne we also got to check out the latest goods from Scott Bikes, starting off with the Scott Genius LT. Considering the range had a total redesign last year, the 170mm travel Genius LT range got only minor spec changes, including the new Fox 36 fork, for 2015. BIG FAT CARBON FRAME: CHECK.
