IWA Charger Connection November 2014

IWA
Charger Connection
November 2014
On October 3rd, IWA welcomed a record crowd to Homecoming
2014 -“And the Music Goes On”. That week of the game was
spirit week and IWA students truly showed all their school spirit
by participating in days such as Team Day, Camo Day, America
Day, PJ Day, and Spirit Day. On Friday, the classes made their
floats and then had a powder puff football game between the
Juniors and Seniors. Before the game Friday night, Mr. Vaughan
awarded Craig Stallings ‘90 the Alumnus of the Year award and
the IWA Athletic Association dedicated its annual program
booklet to former IWA music teacher Pat Conley who passed
away earlier this school year. The IWA Pep Band and the IWA
Chorus, under the direction of IWA Music Director, Megan
Marshall performed the Star Spangled Banner. Halftime saw the
annual parade of floats around the football field. The parade was
led by our 2014 Grand Marshals Ryan Scarberry ‘06. Brad
Garner ‘06, Steve Lazar ‘05, and Dale Paul Lazar ‘04. The men
were all a part of the music program while students here at IWA
and are currently helping to keep the music play on by teaching
music or playing independently. The 9th grade class won the
float contest with their 80s rock themed float “KISS the Vikings
Good Bye”. Miss Brooke Olsavicky was named Homecoming
Queen and Ginger Tarkington was her Homecoming Attendant.
A record crowd watched as the Charger football team beat the
Broadwater Academy Vikings 42-14. Chopper 10 from WAVY TV
10 even made an appearance and stopped in to watch the
action.

R.A.K. Pack
To Help C.O.P.
The middle school R.A.K. (Random
Acts of Kindness) Pack is going to
host their annual food drive again
from November 17th until December
17th. Proceeds will benefit the Christian Outreach Program.
Their goal this year is to donate 2 tons of food! Items may be
turned in to your child’s homeroom teacher.
The R.A.K. Pack is also going to be
participating in Operation Christmas
Child. They will be collecting shoeboxes
from middle school students that are filled
with toys, hygiene products and candy to
send to children all around the world who
usually wouldn’t get anything for
Christmas. The deadline for turning in a
shoebox to Mrs. Riddick is November 19th.
Recently the 2013-2014 Annual Report was mailed out
and an omission was made in the listing for donors to the
Building For The Future Capital Campaign. Robin
Marsh Simmons should be listed as a Red and White
level donor for capital giving . Isle of Wight Academy is
grateful for all of our donors and we apologize for this
omission. Thanks Dr. Simmons for helping IWA as we
are “Building For The Future”.
Spanish Students are Teachers
Each year, Spanish Honor Society members must engage in an activity from each
of the following official categories: Academic Commitment, Community
Commitment, or Global Commitment. This year, for their community
commitment and in conjunction with the Hispanic Heritage Month, members of
the Isle of Wight chapter taught Spanish to all classes in the lower school. They
created a lesson plan using a template provided by Sra. Rodriguez, the Spanish
Honor Society sponsor. Their lessons were tailored specifically for the grade level
they signed up to teach. Some of the members taught more than one grade level.
The lessons were very interactive, in which students learned the alphabet,
numbers, colors, greetings, and animals. They also played games, and read books.
Lower school students, as well as members of the society, enjoyed the experience.
Students Sport Their Pink
The entire IWA family donned pink one day last month in honor of
Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The RAK Pack even held a bake sale
that day with lots of pink treats!
Fire Safety at IWA
As part of Fire Prevention month during October,
the Windsor Volunteer Fire Department and
Smokey the Bear stopped by Isle of Wight Academy
to teach our students about fire safety.

IWA KEY CLUB
“Project Christmas -The
Magic of Service”
Many people are experiencing hard
times.
“Hard times” are even more
unbearable during the Holidays! Many charitable organizations
are having to turn down needy people because their resources
(donations) are less this year. The KEY CLUB is a “service”
organization! So, we are taking on several projects for the
Holidays:
1. ANGEL TREE - We will be starting our Angel
Tree for the residents of Consulate Nursing Home
in Windsor on Monday, November 10. The tree
will be placed in the front office and individual
students, teachers & staff, clubs, or entire classes
may take an Angel ornament (or several) with a
shopping list and sponsor a resident at the Nursing
Home. Deadline for return of gifts is Monday,
December 15. Our goal is to sponsor 75 residents to ensure that
each of them will wake up Christmas morning with presents (gift
bags) to open! The value of your angel gift bag is not to exceed
$25. If you would prefer not to select an Angel ornament,
donations are also being accepted. Make checks out to: “IWA
KEY CLUB” and memo “Angel Tree”.
2. ADOPT-A-FAMILY - The KEY CLUB is partnering with the
Smithfield Foundation and their “Smithfield Cares” program to
sponsor needy families for the holidays. Our goal is to sponsor 6
families with “school-age” children. We are asking each grade in
the high school (Grades 8 – 12) to sponsor one family. The KEY
CLUB members will also sponsor one family. KEY CLUB
members will deliver the gifts to the families the week we get out for
the Christmas Holidays (December 17 and 18). Donations are also
being accepted if you would like to help sponsor a family. Make
checks payable to: “IWA KEY CLUB / memo “Adopt-A-Family)
3. MELANIE’S STOCKING - This project is in
memory of Melanie Hatfield, an IWA preschooler
who lost her battle with leukemia several years
ago. After her death, this project was undertaken by
the
KEY
CLUB
to
honor
Melanie’s
memory. Christmas was her favorite time of year,
so, to honor her and to help others, we sell paper
stockings for $1 each to students in both the lower
and high schools to display on their classroom windows. The
money raised from selling stockings is donated to CHKD
(Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters) who will use the
money to purchase gift cards to distribute to the families of children
with terminal illnesses at CHKD. Stocking will be sold from
Wednesday, November 12 through Monday, December
15. Donations are also being accepted. Checks may be made
payable to: “IWA KEY CLUB” / memo “Melanie’s Stocking.
We challenge each of you to support the Key Club by 1)being an
“angel” for a nursing home resident. 2) helping to adopt a needy
family, or 3) contributing to “Melanie’s Stocking”.
If you have any questions about any of these KEY CLUB projects,
please contact Mr. Ben Brown, IWA KEY CLUB Advisor, by phone
at (757) 357-3866 or by email at [email protected]
It’s Book
Fair Time!!!
The Scholastic Book
Fair will be visiting
the IWA library from
November 17th-21st.
Harvest
Festival
It was a beautiful October day
for the 46th annual IWA Harvest
Festival. First graders Josie Byrum
and Bryce Edwards were
named the 2014 Harvest Festival
King and Queen. Approximately
$23,000 was raised that day for
the IWA PTO (Parent Teacher Organization).
If you know someone who would like to be added to our email list or
mailing list, please tell them to go to www.iwacademy.com and click
the link at the bottom of the page.
Kindergarten Meets “Buster”
Amy Herrmann, one of the IWA
middle school science teachers,
visited
Mrs.
Rose’s
Kindergarten class with
‘Buster”, her classroom
skeleton to talk about our
own skeletons and why
they are important to our
bodies.
A Meal in Spanish
Students in Seniora Rodriguez's Dual Credit Spanish classes
learned how to order meals in a restaurant in on of their recent
studies. At the end of the unit, they had the opportunity to visit
a local Mexican restaurant to apply
what they have learned.
JSCO News
One of the things that the
IWA JSCO (Junior Student
Council
Organization)
does each year is to
sponsor several mid-week coffee breaks
for the teachers. IWA teachers recently
started their day off with many delicious
breakfast foods at the first coffee break
of the 2014-2015 school year.
Farm Fresh
Don’t forget to save those Farm Fresh receipts!!!! Isle of Wight
Academy participates in the Farm Fresh 123-4 Community Program
and by sending in your receipts (dated 9/8/2014-5/31/2015), you
can help us earn supplies and electronics! You can also save Farm
Fresh pharmacy and gas receipts and turn them in as part of this
program. Receipts may be turned in to the IWA library.
