Destination Chesterfield Annual Review 2013/2014

Chesterfield
CELEBRATING THE achievementS
OF DERBYSHIRE’S LARGEST TOWN
welcome to
Chesterfield
There has been lots to celebrate in Chesterfield over the
last year and this review looks at the highlights as well as
updating on the progress of Destination Chesterfield’s six
campaigns, Invest in Chesterfield; Celebrate Chesterfield;
Warm Welcome; Incubation Street; Made in Chesterfield
and the Chesterfield Champions.
Destination Chesterfield has continued to promote the town
with the support of 140 Chesterfield Champions and these
local businesses and organisations have committed both
in time and money to promote Chesterfield. We thank these
partners for their ongoing support.
The team has worked hard with our partners over the last
three years to help raise Chesterfield’s profile and it was a just
reward in January alongside Chesterfield Borough Council’s
Regeneration Team to win the award of Placemaking Team
of the Year at the inaugural national Placemaking Awards.
However we must not stand still and we look forward to
working with you to continue to promote the great town
of Chesterfield.

Chair of Destination Chesterfield
Destination Chesterfield

harnessing its location, potential
and confidence as a contemporary

A sculpture commemorating
the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
was unveiled in Queen’s Park.
The sculpture, in the shape of
a diamond, was the idea of
Sterling Machining Limited, a local
engineering company, who designed,
created and donated it to the people
of Chesterfield.
Each facet contains a significant event
for each year of the Queen’s reign,
either locally or nationally.
The public and businesses chose
their preferred design for a major new
artwork and landscaping scheme
on a key gateway to Chesterfield.
‘Growth’, designed by Derbyshirebased artist Melanie Jackson, will be
installed on Hornsbridge Roundabout
by autumn 2014.
A second phase of the project will
make improvements to the approach
to the town from the station and will
be completed by the end of 2014.
The Gateway Enhancement Project
is funded by ERDF, supported by
Barratt Homes and delivered by
Chesterfield Borough Council.

AMBASSADORS
Chesterfield’s Proact Stadium hosted
an event recognising the town’s first
ever taxi Ambassadors.
At the event 15 licensed taxi drivers
were named as Chesterfield’s front line
ambassadors, tasked with welcoming
people to the town. They are the first
taxi drivers to join the Destination
Chesterfield volunteer Ambassador
scheme, which currently numbers
more than 135 frontline staff from
organisations across the town.
The Ambassadors programme
developed with Evolution Training and
Chesterfield Borough Council’s Visitor
Information Centre, gives up-to-date
knowledge of the town, its history and
its future regeneration. More workshops
are planned in 2014.

excellence and innovation across the
coach tourism industry and includes

friendly status by the Confederation of
Passenger Transport UK in February.
The town welcomes over 500 coaches
each year to its purpose built coach
station, opened in 2005.

coach station in September 2013 as
part of Destination Chesterfield’s Warm

FOOD AND DRINK
AWARDS
Chesterfield’s very best food and
drink establishments and producers
were honoured at a glittering awards
ceremony organised by Destination
Chesterfield and hosted by TV chef and
presenter Ainsley Harriott on Wednesday
30th October.
10 businesses and individuals across 11
categories were named as Chesterfield’s
finest at the sell-out awards ceremony
held at Chesterfield College’s Heart
Space Building. The awards will return
in 2014.
Awards host Ainsley Harriott said:
“It was amazing to see the passion felt
by everyone in the room about the Food
and Drink Awards. The evening brought
the hospitality community together.
The awards have also created a new
standard in food that is very exciting”.
He also added: “It’s inspiring to hear that
Chesterfield College is training the next
generation of chefs.”
A number of the winners went on to
further success at the Derbyshire Food
and Drink Awards.
Chesterfield FC received a glowing
endorsement from UEFA following
the European Women’s Under-17
Championship, which featured four
games staged at the Proact Stadium
in November.
The club hosted the final of the
tournament, which saw Germany beat
Spain in a penalty shoot-out after the
two sides were tied at 1-1 at the end
of normal time.
Tournament director Adrian Bevington
praised the club’s handling of the
matches. He said: “Chesterfield FC
have been fantastic hosts of the
UEFA European Women’s Under-17
Championship and provided us with
a great stadium for a final of this level.”
