Beyond business...Touching lives...
annual csr report
2013-2014
“ in a free enterprise,
the community is not
just another stakeholder
in business but is in fact
the very purpose of its
existence “
- Mr, Jamsetji N. Tata
(Founder, Tata Group)
directors’ note
Our Malnutrition Treatment Centre at Jamshedpur has saved lives of more than 250 severely
and acute malnourished (SAM) children and replicating our model, the State Government of
Jharkhand established 48 such centers across the state.
During the year, we have launched series of new skill building initiatives across the locations
to impart vocational training unemployed youth. We have partnered with Rural SelfEmployed Training Institute at Jamshedpur for training and mentoring rural women to start
micro-enterprises. In Pune, with MITCON we started training of youth in automotive trades.
Moreover, we have also launched ‘Learn and Earn’ program to train youth as mechanics in
partnership with our dealers. This program integrates classroom learning with on-the-job
practical training and opens path to earn dignified living before unemployed youth.
Dear Colleagues,
Giving back to society is in DNA of Tata Motors and the same is reflected
through our Corporate Social Responsibility report of FY 13 – 14. During the year, we have
positively impacted lives of more than 360,000 people. We have provided curative and
preventive health services to 284,000 people and 37,000 students were benefitted through our
education program. We have also provided technical and vocational training to 20,000 youth
and planted 164,000 saplings to increase green cover.
The spirit, commitment and dedication of our employees, who volunteered for CSR activities, is
truly phenomenal. We have witnessed their enthusiasm in various forms. Our employees have
donated generously for Uttarakhand and Maharashtra disaster relief work. We have donated
Rs. 4.5 Crores for Uttarakhand relief work. 22% of our employees registered themselves
as volunteers during the Employee Volunteering Week celebrated to mark 175th birth
anniversary of our group’s founder and invested 23,000 hours in volunteering for various CSR
activities.
Under our Affirmative Action Program, we have provided scholarships to 652 SC/ST students
and trained 3000 SC/ST youth in various vocational skills. Our Training Division at Pune visited
29 tribal ITIs for recruitment of SC/ST Apprentices under Job Trainee Apprentice (JTA) scheme.
The apprentices recruited under this scheme get unique opportunity to upgrade their skills and
become part of our workforce.
Giving impetus on secondary education, we have started Special Coaching Classes focused on
improving academic performance of students and we have got encouraging results from the
students enrolled in these classes. We have also launched scholarship scheme for the wards of
commercial vehicle drivers and going a step ahead, on National Customer Care Day, we have
extended personal accident insurance to drivers.
Moving forward on the innovation curve, we have also re-oriented our CSR strategy, guided
by regulatory requirements and included aspects like indicators for measuring impact of
our CSR program. We have also developed long-term CSR plan integrating business needs
and aspirations of the community. Through focused community interventions and strategic
partnerships, we planned to positively impact lives of one million people in next five years.
We present our CSR performance through this report and look forward to your ideas and
feedback that would help us to improve our CSR performance.

Building Human Capital
The Corporate Citizenship at Tata Motors is demonstrated through our active participation
in improving quality of life of the people in the communities in which we operate. Our
CSR program was started in 1950s, with commencement of manufacturing operations at
Jamshedpur.
In the CSR journey of last 6 decades, we
created some milestones such as formation of
self-sustainable women cooperative society
– Tata Motors Grihini Udyog at Pune and
reducing incidences of rampant leprosy from
East Singhbhum district.
We have also created strong national
footprint through establishing partnership
with 137 ITIs and starting 10 Professional
Driver Training Schools in partnership with
our Dealers, Government Departments and
Skill Development Agencies.
Our commitment towards inclusive growth is further demonstrated through our Affirmative
Action Program. On the lines of Tata Group’s Affirmative Action (AA) Policy, we have developed
our AA program and attempt to address the prevailing social inequities in India by encouraging
positive discrimination for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) communities.
Our community interventions aim to solicit active participation from local communities,
government and NGOs. To fulfill this objective, we have formed meaningful multi-stakeholder
partnerships which helped us in developing programs that have a lasting impact. We regularly
constructive feedback from key stakeholder groups and review our CSR program as per Tata
CS Protocol. Our AA program is reviewed annually under Tata Affirmative Action Assessment
Program (TAAP) and its feedback further helps us in strengthening our program

Health Program
The health situation in the villages is abysmally poor due to absence of adequate basic
health services. We extend curative and preventive health services in the villages through
medical camps. These camps not only provide necessary medicine but they also carry
various social messages. Through these health camps, we raise awareness amongst the
community members on balanced diet, malnutrition, use of tobacco, etc. We also train
community members in first-aid, as mid-wives and as community health worker in order to
ensure that community members do not fall in hands of quacks.
We have created full-fledged hospital in Jamshedpur for community. This hospital has
adequately furnished operation theatre and post- operative ward is a help in providing
quality health services to the community by conducting operations on cataract, Lap TT &
NSV. We have also done cleft surgery in partnership with ‘SMILE TRAIN’ Project which
aims to ‘bring a smile to children with cleft lip and palate deformities’.

Malnutrition Treatment and Prevention
We have established Malnutrition Treatment Centre (MTC) in partnership with UNICEF and
Government of Jharkhand. Any child admitted to MTC is given free treatment and round-theclock feeding care for 15 – 30 days, depending upon this health.
Moreover, this centre also extends wage
compensation (as per state government
norms) to one family member required to
stay with child in the hospital. The MTC is
supervised by 1 doctor, 5 pare-medical staff
and 2 attendants round the clock in shifts for
providing personalized care and service to
the children. Moreover, if need arises, doctors
from Tata Motors hospital also visit MTC. On
the similar lines, we have organised camps for
early detection of malnutrition at Pantnagar and
Lucknow.

Educational Program
Our education program envisions bringing positive impact on the lives of children through
effective, case based holistic approach. The educational assistance needs to be earned
by the student as one is expected to demonstrate improvement in school grades for
every subsequent class. Moreover, working with parents and teachers has ensured their
participation in our education program.
Our secondary school education program at Pune has not only motivated students to
complete their education but it has also guided them towards right career path. Some
students, associated with us through this program, have now joined the company as
apprentices. The success of this program encourages us to upscale this model across
manufacturing units and going a step further, we have also started Special Coaching
Classes for secondary school students.

Jojobera Rajkiya Madhya Vidyalaya (Government Middle School) established in 1951 was initially
known as ‘Harizan Middle School’. In 1983, this school was further renamed as ‘Hari Om School’ in
1983. Established with help of Tata Motors, this school primarily catering to educational need of
underprivileged community needed a facelift.
Due to lack of maintenance, the school building was dilapidated and caused serious threat to
lives of students. Community members approached Tata Motors CSR team for construction
of new school. CSR Team, after series of consultation with parents and teachers, decided to
construct New Building for the school.
New school with 8 airy class rooms with black board, toilets, wash basins, staircase and
compound wall, storm-water drain, kitchen and provision for water supply was handed over to
the community. Moreover, steps to ensure community participation towards maintenance of
the school were also initiated. At present, 232 children including 140 girl students are studying
in this school.

Mainstreaming School Dropouts
Bhantarhsala Program at Sanand is been implemented in partnership with GANATAR, a NGO
working on education. Based on the Gandhian philosophy of integrating education and vocational
skills, this residential school also trains students in vocational skills of their choice.
The students while living together
in hostel manage their cafeteria and
the kitchen garden. Gradually, they
are streamlined in formal education
system and they appear as external
student in state board examination.
Presently, 42 school dropout students
enrolled in this program and 9
students have appeared in Gujarat
State Secondary School Board Exam.
22
Developing Rural Scholars from Bhima
Shankar Tribal Sub-Region, Pune
Our award winning Education program at Pune, every year identifies around 600 boys and girls,
enrolled in secondary schools, from Bhima Shankar sub-tribal belt. These students, selected
on need-cum-merit basis, are mentored by our employee volunteers. Our employees not only
provide career guidance to students but they also get in touch with parents and teachers to
understand learning difficulties faced by the students.
Many of these students are first generation learners and in absence of such support system they
generally drop-out from the formal school system. We organize residential camps for holistic
personality development of students. In these residential camps, students learn life-skills,
understand basics of science and participate in personality development programs. We also
organize special camps for parents and teachers and counsel them on adolescent psychology
and train them on advances pedagogical techniques. This program has reduced school dropout
and it has also improved academic performance of schools, from70% to 100% result in class X
board examination.

Support to Special Children
At Jamshedpur, Asha Kiran & START-institutions supporting the cause of the special children
is one of the unique initiative whereby around 100 students are being given training on how to
manage their lives and get a vocation to earn a dignified living. The small kids with special ability
are enrolled at Asha Kiran School to learn the basic life skills and other things necessary to lead
a normal life. Children are also encouraged to take part in academics and other co-curricular
activities. Weekly physiotherapy classes and regular computer classes are also organized for
children at Asha Kiran School.
Special Coaching Classes for Municipal
Schools Students in Mumbai
Mumbai is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra and is also commercial and
entertainment capital of the country. As per 2011 census, it is most populous city in the country
and 62% of the city’s population is living in slums . Due to low education cost, municipal schools are
first choice of slum households. Through our secondary research, we identified pockets having low
education standards and schools in these pockets have similar dropout and attendance rates like
their rural counterparts. Moreover, this problem is further aggravated due to high distractions and
absence of social fabric.
We identified 4 schools in the vicinity high concentration of slums and started special coaching
classes for secondary school students in partnership with NGOs working in education space. We
appointed qualified teachers in these schools who teach students for additional two hours every
day focusing only on tough subjects like – Math, Science and English. Performance of a student is
monitored through monthly tests and his attendance in class.
We engage with parents to create positive learning environment at home and also conduct regular
home visits to check progress of students with their parents. The activities like toy bank, excursions,
counseling by professional counselor help in creating joyful learning environment. Our employees
also volunteer their personal time and guide students about career options available to after
matriculation. Presently, this program is conducted at 4 municipal schools and 409 SC/ST students
are enrolled in the classes.
Society for Technical Assistance & Remedial Teaching (START) is an institution to provide
different vocational trainings to the special children who are above 18 years of age to help them
earn a living and lead a dignified living. The youths are also taught to lead a normal life like how
to utilize the services of a bank, post office, shop etc. Depending on the ability of an individual,
each one of them are engaged in photocopying, disinfectant making, distill water making,
packaging, book binding, managing stalls etc. for earning a livelihood.

Employability Program
Skill development of Indian Youth is one of our major CSR program. We have a three step
prolonged approach adopted to promote and enhance employability of youth. This is
followed by post-training engagement with the employable youth to help them to have
gainful employment thus, become productive members of the society.
For skill development of unemployed youth, we have associated ourselves with 137 ITIs
across 19 states and launched series of programs to provide technical and vocational
training. Focussed initiatives have been undertaken in terms of upgrading the in-house
training facilities, improving the quality of training by Training the Trainer program etc.
with an ultimate aim of creating world class skilled work force and making the potential
employees ‘Job-ready’ before they embark upon their professional career.

The idea behind this concept is to provide a platform to students so they gain first-hand
experience while they are still pursuing their career. In this year- long model, along with the
theory classes the students undergo extensive ‘on the job’ practical sessions in workshops of our
authorised dealers. At the end of the course students are awarded a certification of successful
completion of the course. After completion of the course, the students are to free to join the
same enterprise where they have interned as a student or they may choose to join any other
enterprise of their choice.

A student undergoes through intensive classroom training in first 3 months of the program and
for remaining nine months they attend theory classes two days a week and in remaining four
days, he works in workshop. He is paid for the internship period at our dealer’s workshop and
this amount is sufficient to cover their training expenses and also help them to contribute to
their family’s financial needs. Presently, this program is running in 4 cities & 90 students are
enrolled in it.

Professional Driver Training Program
Worldwide, Transport sector has emerged
as the biggest employer - one commercial
vehicle provides employment to 13.3
people; a car provides employment to 5.3
people. We believe that the vitality and
growth of the Indian economy depend on
the road transportation and this sector
also opens a door of opportunity for
the unemployed youth with relatively
lower educational qualification. We also
recognize that drivers are the primary
customers of company’s commercial
vehicles and to sustain business growth,
more drivers will be required in upcoming
years. To address these challenges and
create employment opportunities to
unemployed youth, we have developed a
unique approach towards
professional drivers training. This year
we have also started Driving School at
Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh in partnership
with Singrauli District administration. Mr.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Chief Minister
Madhya Pradesh inaugurated this school
in May 2013. We have also expanded
scope of this program by adding existing
driving school as implementation
partners. Presently, 3 reputed driving
schools partnered with us to train youth
as Professional Drivers.
in the year 2013-14 we
have trained more than 700
novice drivers
33
34
We have also trained farmers on scientific techniques
on vegetable cultivation, soil & fertilizer management
and organized exposure visit to Darisai Krishi
Vigyan Centre, where they learnt various aspects
of vegetable cultivation and farming from research
scientists. Mr. Budhan Murmu was identified by
Jharkhand Agriculture Department as potential
progressive farmer and sent to places like Bhopal &
Nagpur for exposure visits. After coming back from
these visits Budhan shared his learning’s with fellow
farmers through a workshop and helped many farmers
to start cultivation of profitable vegetables like beans,
cauliflower and cabbage.
Developing farms on Cultivable
Wasteland
Village Khursi of Potka Block in East
Singhbhum of Jharkhand, home to 99
families of which 77 are tribals, 74 of
these tribal families have cultivable land
and were known for their inclination
towards farming. The agriculture is rain
fed, so the farmers generally take only 2
crops during the year and rest of the time
they engage as contract labourers.
After series of discussion with farmers,
we conceptualised Lift Irrigation project
using water of Gurra River to irrigate
waste land. The farmers formed ‘water
user committee’ and worked for the
construction of trench and pump house.
This partnership helped in developing 40
acres of cultivable wasteland.
As Budhan puts it “I had never imagined before that
agriculture can be done to generate such profits,
neither I would have thought how farm machination
can improve productivity and coverage before going
to Bhopal for exposure visit, Now I have started to
think big about agriculture and try to communicate
this message to my fellow farmers of Khursi. I really
thank Tata Motors CSR for the help they have
provided us to develop our agriculture, without their
support farmers of Khursi could not have dreamt of
continuing farming throughout the year more so as an
enterprising activity”.
35
36
Enhancing skills of rural women
We promote formation and strengthening of self-help groups of rural women. We strengthen
their groups by imparting training on record keeping, accounting, etc. In partnership with
specialised agencies like Rural Self Employment Training Institute (RSETI), we train them in
entrepreneurial skills like - tailoring, phenyl and broom making, apiculture, etc. and extend them
marketing support. Through these activities, by working at flexible timings, women are able to
earn additional income to Rs. 800 per month.
In partnership with Jan Shikshan
Sansthan, we have trained 100 women
in Lucknow in designing and production
of Jute Bags. These rural women, after
training of 6 months can make 40
different types of Jute Bags. The Jute
Bags produced by them find ready
market with the institutions like Lucknow
Management Association which requires
such bags for various academic events.
In the year 13 -14, 30 women associated
with production sold jute bags of Rs. 3.2
lakhs.
Jeevan Jyothi School of Nursing (JJSN),
Jamshedpur
Jeevan Jyothi School of Nursing (JJSN) was established in partnership with Tata Motors Hospital
and Sisters of the Society of Jesus, Mary & Joseph. JJSN was established to provide quality training
and clinical experience to nursing students. Tata Motors donated land and building to JJSN and
bear the operational cost of the institution. The school is recognized by Bihar Nurses Registration
Council, Indian Nursing Council and Mid India Board of Education.
Every year, 25 girls selected through
common entrance test take admission
in nursing course. They undergo 3.5
years of residential nursing program
and earn Diploma in General Nursing
and Mid-wifery. Around 15 students,
from the batch of 25, join Tata Motors’
Hospital every year. Remaining
students join other hospitals run by
the Sisters and earn an average salary
of Rs. 6-8 thousand per month.

Environment Program
Rising industrialization has seen overexploitation of natural resources. Environmental
conservation is major pillar of our CSR program and wherever possible we try to synergise
the same with livelihood. In the consultation with key stakeholders within the community,
we have developed comprehensive environment conservation program, which comprises
of: tree plantation on wasteland, building awareness amongst community members,
promote use of renewable energy.

Tree Plantation on waste land to convert
wasteland into forest is done partnership
with community members. Major thrust of
this program is on mobilizing the villagers
and creating awareness among them on
the need of forest and we also engage
our employees in tree plantation drive.
The improved forest cover over the years
has led to the soil conservation as well as
income supplement through timber and
fruit sale. The community members are
sensitized about the issue of environment
and are involved in tree plantation.

Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary, an
internationally recognised Ramsar site,
is facing threat of bird poaching by local
youth. Youth in absence to any sustainable
livelihood source engage activities which
endangered migratory birds. We engaged
Natural Conservation Society, Gujarat to
impart 6 months training program to 25
local youth from the backward villages of
Nalsarovar.
This training session provided a classic
opportunity where through non-evasive
means local youth can earn their living.
In a way, this project also gives boost to
natural tourism and thereby improving
local economy. The youth, upon
successful completion of the program,
will be awarded certificates from Forest
Department and they will also be given
permission to work inside the bird
sanctuary as Guides.

Promoting use of clean energy –
Domestic Bio-Gas Plant
Residents of Ramnager village of Nainital
district are dependent on Jim Corbett
National Park for fuel wood. Women
walk for 5-6 kilometres face to collect
fuel wood daily face threat of wild
animals. In consultation with villagers and
representative of local NGO, we decided
to share cost of installing 5 pre-fabricated
Bio-Gas units.
A Bio-Gas unit is an excellent source of
clean energy created from animal waste. It
is environment friendly simple technology
and has health benefits for rural women.
After initial success of this project, we
are now looking forward to scale-up this
project and integrate it with our dairy
development initiative.

for higher studies. 9300 SC/ST students benefitted from school support program including
coaching classes, teacher training, co-curricular activities and infrastructure development.
Employability
We have observed that due to their academic performance or lack of exposure, many times SC/
ST youth are not selected for our in-house Apprenticeship training program. Training divisions
at Pune have relaxed age and marks criteria for SC/ST youth and Jamshedpur started a batch
exclusively for them. Going a step ahead, Training Division at Pune conducted apprenticeship
recruitment program at 29 tribal ITIs and selected 135 ST candidates under Job trainee
Apprenticeship scheme. We have also conducted Faculty Development Program for 100
teachers of tribal ITIs.
Bring SC/ST
communities on

related to service sector. 422 members of community based stakeholder groups, such as –
farmers’ group, women self-help group are trained in improved agriculture and allied industries
such as – dairy, pisciculture, etc.
Entrepreneurship
We have already partnered with DICCI (Dalit Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry)
to identify and incorporate SC/ST entrepreneurs in vendor base. We presented about our
Affirmative Action Program in vendor meets to obtain buy-in from current vendors. This year,
we have added 2 more SC/ST entrepreneurs (total 9 entrepreneurs) in our supply chain and
extended business of Rs. 241.6 lakhs to them.

Maharashtra Drought Relief Work
Uttarakhand Flood Relief Work
In the year 2013, the state of Maharashtra faced worst drought in last 40 years. The state
government has declared 15 districts as drought hit. We approached Tata Institute of Social
Sciences (TISS) to explore possible ways to reach out of population in need. We prepared
detailed implementation plan with them and appealed our employees to donate for this cause.
In June 2013, the heavy rains in the state of Uttarakhand caused devastating floods and
landslides and wiped out entire villages and settlement. Tata Motors played a pivotal role in Tata
Group’s response to this national calamity. Our employees and union members enthusiastically
participated in the relief activities. Our dealers M/S Oberai Motors and Amit Autowheels
facilitated procurement and transportation of relief materials in affected areas. A team of
doctors from Jamshedpur, Pune and Lucknow provided health services in remote affected
areas. We have distributed 3 truck-load of relief material to 500 families stranded in remote
villages of Pithoragarh, Chamoli and Uttarkashi districts.
This amount was used for sustainable drought proofing work in 10 severe most affected villages
having population of over 7500 people. The nature of work will not only be catering to drinking
water but also cover aspects of health and hygiene. As per the detailed plan, shared by TISS,
the work will end by mid July 2014. Till March 2014, 22 hand pumps have been repaired and 4
water storage tanks have been constructed in the project villages.
Rs. 56.4 lakhs raised
towards drought proofing
work
Reaching out to beneficiaries was quite
challenging task. The roads connecting
to these villages were washed out due to
heavy rains and at many places we have
to tow relief trucks since it gets stuck in
mud. Teams members also walked for 7 – 8
kilometres to reach out to remote villages.
