When it comes to Education the triangle formed between a committed teacher, a motivated student and caring parent is the key to getting the most value from your student’s education. I urge all parents and carers to establish the communication link with your teacher and keep updated and abreast of your students’ progress. Staff have innovative ways of keeping the communication lines open but if you feel contact is lacking please do not hesitate to seek an opportunity to touch base with the teacher and create a vehicle for communication. Generally issues concerning your student are best handled by the teacher in the first instance. If you feel your questions or concerns are not being satisfactorily answered then contact with the relevant Head of School would be the next avenue and if necessary a discussion with the College Principal. Staff Changes At KDSC we endeavour to limit staffing changes as much as possible but inevitably throughout the year changes are thrust upon us. I am pleased to announce that Michelle Neubecker has been appointed as our consolidation and explicit instruction coach (as per the GRG funding discussed in the last newsletter.) This role is to commence in term 2 and a suitable replacement is now being sought. I have assured Parents via letter communication that Michelle will continue in her role as teacher of 4/5A until a suitable replacement is found and necessary transition time is undertaken. We have also appointed Miss Tanara Jackson to commence in Term 2 to replace Margaret Barron, Deb Richards and Elaine Senini who have been sharing 4A throughout term 1. Shared arrangements are always difficult but sometimes necessary. My thanks to Margaret, Deb and Elaine for their work with 4A this term. Moving forward, Margaret will be working with our students in the PE department whilst Elaine will continue with her well-earned leave. Fleur Henderson has commenced in our new year 1 class, whilst Deb Taylor has joined our staff to take over the intensive literacy classes. In other staffing news our primary music teacher Tim Morgan is moving to the gold coast for family reasons, a replacement is currently being sourced. Thank you again for the welcome I have received in Kuranda I am looking forward to continual improvement of our College. The changes in the Prep and Year 1 classes with the creation of a new classroom has been accomplished with thanks to Miss Fleur, Miss Monique, Mrs Kennedy and Mr Paul for making the transition as smooth as possible. Next term students in years 2 & 3 will be commencing their Spelling Mastery program. Prep and year 1 students will continue with their phonics based word and letter recognition programs, with year 1 commencing Spelling Mastery at the beginning of semester 2.This term it has been my pleasure to visit classrooms on a regular basis in the Junior School, and it has been exciting to see students make new friendships in their classes and begin to work well together. During these final weeks of the term, the children are completing their unit work, and moving on to complete the unit assessments. Year 3 students are working particularly hard in preparation for their first ever National Testing. NAPLAN tests are held in the second week in May. Miss Pitt and Miss C are both working with the guidance of Mr Cavanagh (Head of Curriculum) to ensure that our children are prepared for these tests . Middle School Years Year 4-9 On Thursday the 13 Team leader Mr Shane Curley Indigenous Students from Years 9 to 12 at the FOGs Careers and Employment Expo. Senior School Team leader Ms Katherine McFarlane Taty Hudson (Yr 11) and Scott Prince at the FOGs Careers Expo th of March I was invited to a leadership camp at Holloways Beach. At camp we pushed our comfort zone. We learned public speaking and how to get along with other people. We all thought the high ropes was the most challenging course because we had to have self confidence and trust in our team, while pushing ourselves. I would like to thank our teacher Ms.Neubecker and Chris and Louise, the Holloways Beach Environmental Centre teachers. Leon Davis, Year 6 On Thursday I was invited to a Leadership camp at Holloway’s Beach which was on becoming a better school leader and to learn about public speaking. We learnt to trust people and to trust your team. We were encouraged non stop. We did this by teamwork, while doing the high ropes and cooking groups. It was quiet difficult at times because you had to trust your team and push yourself. I would like to say thank you to Louise and Chris for making u s b e t t e r l e a d e r s . T h o m a s R ic h a r d s o n , Y e a r 6 Senior School Years 10-12 The Senior School is humming along with students very focussed at this time of term on completing assessments for their various subjects. I have reviewed all our senior student data in conference with students, teachers, and as required, parents, and am very happy to say that our senior cohort is on track to achieve the goals set by themselves and targets set by the school. At Kuranda District State College we call this process of mapping student goals and achievements „My Senior Journey‟. Each student from Years 10, 11 and 12 have their own individual folio which records their Intended Learning Outcome for senior schooling which works in partnership with the student‟s Senior Education and Training Plan (SET Plan). We find that this process keeps everyone informed and is very transparent. Career development is another important aspect of this process. All Year 10 students complete the Certificate II in Workplace Practices, which awards them 4 QCE credits and includes work experience. In addition to this, students have the opportunity to attend the BLA Careers market as well as undertake industry visits. Last week indigenous students from Years 9 to 12 attended the FOGs Careers and Employment Expo. Students found the expo very informative.
