Head injuries
General consideration:
• Head injuries may be easily overlooked during intake/exam since these scars are hidden in the hairline.
• It doesn’t matter if an injury occurred a “really long time ago!” If it is unhealed, then it may contribute to a problem.
• Always consider both the area of impact as well as the contra coup area – one or both may be affected and should
be addressed.
• People with head injuries often have neck problems. Don’t forget to check the neck – especially C4, C5 and C6 area.
• If someone complains of a headache that starts around BL-10 and travels or shoots up, suspect a head injury.
• In addition to checking the area of impact and contra coup – also check Du20 in all
patients with head injurers. Patients, who develop Oketsu in the head, may also be
more prone to developing depression.
• Always include foot jue points in treatments of patients with head injuries.
Coup
Specific reflexes:
• Area of impact and Contra coup
• Du20 (Oketsu in the head) – may present as pressure pain, “gummy” or loose skin or
Contracoup
heat in the area (hot head, cool body).
Top of the head – Du-20 area treatments:
• Oketsu in the head  treat Oketsu (Liv-4 & Lu-5 on the left) and Liver signs.
• Oketsu in the head after surgery (much higher change of developing depression)  Sp-6 + Sp-9 +
Pericardium treatment.
• Du-2
• Insomnia point (located in the center of the heel)
Neck treatments:
 C1 subluxation – shows as pressure pain at the top of the SCM
Treatment:
• Yao Tong Xue “Chinese back pain points”
• TW-5
• Ear: TW, Brain stem, Point zero
 C2/C3 - phrenic nerve reflex shows at C3 Huato Jiaji
Treatment:
• Right side more painful: treat Liv-1 on the right and add St-25 on the right and Liv-13 on the right.
• Left side more painful: treat Sp-1 on the left.
 C4/C5/C6 – shows as pressure pain or pain on the Du line and/or Huato Jiaji line; patient may have herniated discs
Treatment (two steps)
1. Liv-8 + Ki-10 + Tw-9 with I Hi Kon treatment on the back (Basilar/Vertebral Artery treatment)
2. St-9 if C4 pressure pain remains; SI-16 if C5 pressure pain remains
 C6/7 – transitional vertebrae shows pain at Du line and or Huato Jiaji
Treatment:
• Ht-3
• Behind Ht-1 (1 cun below and 1 cun posterior to Heart-1)
• Immune points
• L5 Huato Jiaji

Vascular compression of the neck.
Check the area of the scalene – ½ cun above St12
Treatment:
Sp-3.2 and Ht-3 OR Lu8 then add a direct treatment on the scalene
Other points to consider in cases of head injuries resulting in neck problems (in combination with above mentioned)
• Ren-12 or Ren-10 + Ren-12 + Ren-13 (lower, middle and
upper Wan/Guan) – especially for herniated discs
• Ren-4 (reflection of the head)
Ren-8 - nose
• Du-12 (Body Pillar), Du-15 or Du-16
nose - we do not needle Cv8 but we
• Huato Jiaji L5
use the area around the navel to
treat allergies/sinusitis
• Kidney-7, Kidney-27, Lung-5 and Bladder-11  Bone
treatment – especially if the head injury resulted in a
cracked skull.
Stomach-25 - eyes
• Bl-2 + Yu-Yao – for generalized neck pain along the
Acute eye pain & problems
Small-intestine channel
• Inner Yin (1/3 the distance from knee to groin away
Tan Tien – head
from Kidney-10 on the inner thigh) – release whole
Depression or head injury
trapezius muscle pain.
Foot jue point treatment:
For head injuries, use the Foot Jue point(s) that
correspond to the area of the head affected by the
injury or the contra coup area. You can also
consider using the Foot Jue point that best suits
the patient’s overall presentation.
Jue (厥) of the feet is a pathological condition and
may have an influence on the rest of the body.
Master Maruyama explored the idea of jue and created this
map. (At the joint between the phalangeal and metatarsals).
Shao Yin – Heart/Kidney
Tai Yin – Lung/Spleen
Jue Yin – Pericardium/Liver
Yang Ming – Large intestine/Stomach
Shao Yang – Triple warmer/Gall bladder
Tai Yang – Small intestine/Bladder

Post-operative
General consideration:
•
Don’t forget to ask about surgeries since not all scars will be visible. Scars from hernia repair, plastic surgery, etc. can
be well hidden.
•
Unhealed scars are the ones that after about 2 years they are still:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Painful on palpation
Different heights than the area surrounding them – raised like a keloid or sunken in
Different color than the surround area – small changes in color are normal, but significantly red/purple scars
may suggest that the scar is unhealed.
Consider a detox treatment (Ki-9 + Ki-27 + LI-15) for patients
who had general anesthesia – even if surgery/procedure
was many years ago. This may be especially true in those
who report “ever since that surgery, things have not been
the same.” For these patients, the detox treatment may
release multiple reflex areas on the abdomen, not just the
liver reflex.
Kid-16
(9 o’clock)
Consider adrenal treatments – even a minor surgery under
general anesthesia can be a scary/traumatic event for a
patient. Check the adrenal reflex (treatment chart on page
2), kidney fire point (palpate by sliding across Ki-2 as
pictured in the diagram) and SCM (see page 1).
Kid-16
(3 o’clock)
Adrenal
reflexes
are at
8 and 4 o’clock
When a scar is painful, use distal points to release it. Choose
points based on:
•
•
•
8
4
Patients constitution
Channel affected by the surgical scar
Original reason for the surgery – i.e. scar pain from a hysterectomy which was performed due to ovarian
cysts may benefit from Kid-10 (the primary point to release the ovary reflex, St-28).
•
Check for oketsu forming – both on the abdomen and oketsu of the head (Du-20)
•
•
•
•
Numbness/tingling or loss of sensation on the scar: Stomach Qi treatments and Ren12 are important.
Post anesthesia detox: Ki-9 +Ki27 + LI-15
Shock/trauma, adrenal treatments: lower leg kidney point with Ki-27
Poor healing after surgery: St-41 + TCM location of Pc-8 (this is an anti-inflammatory combo)
