WINNERS OF THE 2014 DE BEERS ENGLISH OLYMPIAD ANNOUNCED
The Grahamstown Foundation and the South African Council for English Education (SACEE)
has announced the rank order of the top 100 English Olympiad winners at an official prize
giving ceremony held in Grahamstown on Thursday 17 July 2014.
The English Olympiad is an annual English competition that drew more than 8000 entries
this year from high schools throughout South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Mozambique.
This prestigious competition has run since 1976 and is organised jointly by the
Grahamstown Foundation and the South African Council for English Education (SACEE). It
has been sponsored by De Beers since 1985.
On 4 March this year entrants from Grades 10 to 12 wrote the three-hour examination. The
theme this year was “Language, Literature and Laughter”. The anthology, compiled by the
South African Council of English Education and entitled “Life’s a Laugh?” included humorous
extracts from Shakespeare’s plays “Romeo and Juliet” and “A Mid Summer Night’s Dream”,
as well as the scripts Craig Freimond’s “The King of Laughter” and André Lemmer’s “Playing
in the Park”.
Speaking at the prize-giving event, De Beers Consolidated Mines representative Mr Tsepo
Monaledi head of the De Beers Zimele – an entrepreneur supporting initiative in the rural
mining areas of Limpopo, Free State and Northern Cape, commented that:
“The theme this year: ‘Language, Literature and Laughter’, prompts us to examine the
paradoxes between tragedy and comedy, and to explore the human condition to better
understand ourselves and others, and what influences us in the choices we make on a daily
basis.
De Beers congratulates all participants in the English Olympiad. We are particularly proud of
the 351 English Development Initiative (EDI) candidates who entered from the De Beers
mining operation areas including two who are featured in the Top 100 candidates; they are
Mr Obakeng Kock and Ms Bonolo Phillips who entered with the Kimberley Maths and
Science Leadership Academy. What is cause for even greater pride is that nearly 90% of this
year’s EDI candidates passed with merit or higher.
The EDI is a vital component of the Olympiad, and aims to ensure that schools in
communities associated with De Beers mining operations enjoy the benefits of the
Olympiad experience, contributing we believe to an increased level of confidence in English
usage in more communities and providing an opportunity for learners to compete at a
national level.”
Dr Diana Ayliff, Academic Coordinator, commented that:
“This year the Olympiad was slightly different from those set in recent years. The
examination was set along more academic lines and leaned towards an analytical essay in
the literature section and re-introduced a separate section on language study. The length of
the answers was shortened in an effort to get the candidates to draft and submit good,
pithy answers. The top results revealed creative, articulate and intelligent responses to the
set texts and the 2014 theme”.
Prizes awarded against the rank order are as follows:
a. The top three candidates each receive R25 000.
b. The top 15 candidates are invited to attend the National Schools Festival in Grahamstown
free of charge. The English Olympiad prize-giving ceremony is held during this Festival where
the rank order of the top 100 winners is announced.
c. Learners who are ranked between the fourth and 20th positions will receive cash prizes,
books or book vouchers.
d. The Top 50 candidates receive free-tuition scholarships for their first year of study at
Rhodes University immediately upon successful completion of the matriculation
examinations, and subject to meeting the university’s entry requirements.
e. All candidates who complete the paper will receive certificates indicating a classified
evaluation.
