Golenbock Eiseman Assor Bell & Peskoe LLP Pat and John Vlahakis Honorees of the 1st Annual “Land of Opportunity Award ” Maria & Oscar Sandoval arrived from Guatemala in the late ’80’s and live in Stamford. They are both successful business owners; Maria opened Maya Restaurant in 2009, and Oscar, Sandoval Landscaping, in 1996. Maria has long been a community leader and is currently the President of Grupo Quetzal, which helps local Guatemalans and works closely with the Guatemalan Embassy. The Sandovals have been generous in-kind donors to NLS since its inception. They are prime examples of how hard work leads to the realization of the American Dream, and NLS is proud to call them friends. We are a three year old resource center created to strengthen the entire community by actively enhancing the healthy integration of immigrants. Our mission is to EDUCATE, EMPOWER & EMPLOY. We are pleased to have reached more than 2,500 Stamfordarea immigrants to date with 72 hours per week of free classes & programs. Our core programs are ESL; a Worker Center for day workers; and Individual and Family Support Services. In Stamford, 37% of the population is foreign born. We need your support to engage these newcomers into our community. About Fatima Shama The Keynote Commissioner Speaker NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs Fatima Shama has extensive experience in dealing with integrating immigrants into established communities. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg appointed Ms. Shama as Commissioner of the New York Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs in August of 2009; she had previously served as Senior Education Policy Advisor at the Mayor’s Office. Prior to joining the Bloomberg administration in 2006, Ms. Shama served four years as Executive Director of the Greater Brooklyn Health Coalition. Ms. Shama has a Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY Binghamton and a Masters of Public Administration from Baruch College’s School of Public Affairs Executive Program. She was born in the Bronx to immigrant parents - her mother is Brazilian and her late father was Palestinian. Fatima lives in New York City with her husband and their three sons.
