• S anctuary Wetlands Center: Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, Fridays
7:00 am – dusk

lendening Nature Preserve: Wrighton Road entrance daily, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm; Plummer
House entrance Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (trails, butterfly garden, dogs on leash)
• Patuxent Wetland Park: daily, dawn to dusk (fishing, hand-carried boat launch)
• Wootons Landing Wetland Park: daily, dawn to dusk (fishing, loop trail, hand-carried boat
launch)
• Sanctuary Wetlands Center admission fee: $6.00 per vehicle
• Free for current Friends of Jug Bay members, active volunteers, and active military.
• There are no fees to visit our other sites.
• Visit www.jugbay.org for directions, information and updates to our schedule.
• All programs meet at the Wetlands Center at 1361 Wrighton Road unless otherwise noted.
Program fees are in addition to vehicle admittance fees. An adult must accompany children
under 13.
• Please note age limits for each program.
Birdwalk
First Saturday of every month; 8:00 - 11:00 am
Ages: 12 and up
Fee: FREE with $6 per vehicle entrance fee
Learn the skills of identifying birds by sight and
sound. Binoculars and field guides are available to
borrow. Wear comfortable walking shoes and
dress for the weather.

Preschool Nature Series
Friday, Sept 12; 10:00 – 11:00 am - Monarchs
Friday, Oct 3; 10:00 – 11:00 am - Spiders
Friday, Nov 7; 10:00 – 11:00 am - Centipedes
Ages: 3 - 5
Fee: $2 per child. Vehicle entrance fee waived.
Meet a live animal, make a craft and enjoy a
guided hike. Children discover a new animal
every month in the Preschool Nature Series.

Taste of the Wild
Saturday, September 13th; 6:00 - 8:00 pm
Ages: Adults only
Fee: $50 per person, fixed price
Delight your tastebuds with wild, organic foods.
Naturalists will prepare dishes of local and wild,
foraged food. Join us for a formal dinner served
with local wines and music at the Sanctuary. Set
menu, no substitutes available for special food
needs. Limited vegetarian options. Funds dedicated to purchasing an observation scope.

Bill Steiner Canoe Trip
Sunday, Sep 14; 3:00 - 7:00 pm
Ages: 7 and up, with adult
Fee: $25 per person
This canoe trip is in honor of Bill Steiner,
long-time volunteer, canoe guide, and
FOJB president. Paddlers will leave from
the Sanctuary’s River Pier for an ecology
trip on the Patuxent River. There will be
a stop along the way at historic Mt.
Calvert mansion for cheese and wine and
a nature related presentation.

Kayak Jug Bay to Mataponi Creek
Sunday, Sep 21; 9:00 am – 2:00 pm
Ages: 13 and up
Fee: $20 per person
Kayak a stretch of the Patuxent from Jug Bay
Wetlands Sanctuary to the Mataponi Creek.
Marsh ecology and natural history will be discussed along the way. For experienced paddlers
13 years and older.

Exploring Estuaries: Play on the
Water
Saturday, Sep 27; 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Ages: All
Fee: FREE with $6 per vehicle entrance fee
Let’s celebrate living near the country’s largest
estuary: the Chesapeake Bay! Rivers like the
Patuxent, where saltwater and freshwater mix,
are also part of the Bay estuary. Join us for a
canoe or kayak ride on the Patuxent, build a
model boat, weave a cattail mat, make rope
from marsh plants, taste a wild rice dish, or learn
about migrating shorebirds with experienced
ornithologist Dr. Frode Jacobsen.

Marsh Ecology by Canoe
Saturday, Oct 4; 1:00 - 5:00 pm
Ages: 7 and up, with adult
Fee: $20 per person
Discover the abundant wildlife in the Patuxent
River wetlands. We’ll paddle up some of the
smaller branches of the river to look for beavers,
birds, and flowering wetland plants. Please arrive
promptly at the starting time. Bring plenty of
water, sunscreen, a lunch, and shoes that can
get wet. Children must be at least 7 years old
and accompanied by an adult.

Mighty Monarchs
Family Fun Campfire

You may already know that Monarchs migrate
up to 3,000 miles, but did you know that scientists are tagging the butterflies to learn exactly
where they go? Become a citizen scientist and
assist Naturalist Heather Baden in collecting and
tagging Monarchs. Learn what you can do to
create a backyard that Monarchs will love.

Fall Hike--Riggleman Preserve

one of the Sanctuary’s less visited habitats with
Naturalist Elaine Friebele.

Color Fall
Eastern Shore Birding Trip
Saturday, Oct 11; 8:00 am Sunday, Oct 12; 1:00 pm
Fee: $60 per person
Ages: 13 and up
Join staff naturalist Lindsay Hollister and experienced ornithologist Dr. Frode Jacobsen for a
birding adventure on the Eastern Shore. We will
visit Blackwater NWR, Assateague Island, and
other locations if time allows.

Follow That Turtle!
Saturday, Oct 18; 10:00 - 11:00 am

Ages: 6 and up Fee: FREE
Master Naturalist Mike Quinlan will demonstrate
box turtle tracking techniques. Learn about box
turtle biology and turtle habitats, then learn how
to track animals using radio telemetry. Walk-ins
welcome.

Enjoy the fall colors on a hike, see birds up close
during a bird banding demonstration, then gather for refreshments.

We will supply everything you need to make a
beautiful holiday wreath using greens from the
Glendening Preserve and Jug Bay area. Whether
you are a novice or an expert, we will help you
make a wreath for your front door or a centerpiece for your table. Space is limited.
