Visitors can enjoy a beautiful array of the larger exotic species within the display tent, butterflies native to habitats 7 from South America to Africa and Asia. This year, the Conservatory examines “the butterfly effect” concept from chaos theory, that even a small action in one place can significantly affect people and systems far removed. While experiencing all that butterflies evoke in the human imagination, Conservatory guests are encouraged to consider the ripple effect of their own choices and actions in the unpredictable dimension of their sphere of influence. This thought-provoking display is sponsored by WMEE. Regular Conservatory admission applies. “Rhythm and Flow” Summer-Fall Garden Exhibit July 12-November 16 The Botanical Conservatory will introduce a lovely, color-drenched setting for brides and other visitors in their Showcase Garden. Using the landscape architect’s design tools of repetition and form, “Rhythm and Flow” features swaths of color formed of mixed-species floral beds, punctuated by geometric topiary sculptures, to provide an exciting eye-scape for the visitor. A “green wall” planting draws living texture right up the vertical entrance surfaces. Blue-grey grasses and succulent plants contrast with the bright hues and define the surfaces of sculptural spheres and cubes. The suspended canopy offers a frame for photography and weddings throughout the summer and into the fall. Artists Open Call July 5-12 The Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory will hold an open call for visual art to be displayed on our gallery walls during the 2015 exhibit year. Oil, acrylic, photography, pen-and-ink, and similar media encouraged. Submit digital images of a representative selection of work on a CD. Exhibits will run for two months. Family Garden Close-Up Visit the Botanical Conservatory this spring on the fourth Saturday each month to get a closer look at our plants and gardens through short walks, crafts, and snacks. We will visit one of our gardens to discover a different feature, and you’ll get the opportunity to see what the Conservatory truly has to offer as you learn fun and valuable information. FGC is especially fun for young learners. The activities are included with Conservatory admission. FGC: Roots Saturday, June 28, 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Let’s get down to the roots of plants today. Acting like a drinking straw, roots pull water and nutrients out of the soil into plants. But not all root systems are the same. We’ll look at different types and see why each one has its own unique structure. FGC: Compost Saturday, July 26, 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Made up of organic matter, or things that used to be living, such as plants, animals and their waste, although it may be smelly, there’s nothing dirty about compost at all. Compost gives plants and soil the nutrients they need. Join us in looking at a compost pile to discuss what “all the stink” is about. FGC: Birds Saturday, August 23, 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. The Eastern Bluebird, Indigo Bunting and Northern Cardinal are a few of Indiana’s most common backyard birds. They’re fairly easily identified by their features – feathers, wings, and beak – and that they typically are able to fly. Let’s see how many of these warm-blooded, egg-laying vertebrates we can find, then we’ll make something special for them for your own backyard. Location: Botanical Conservatory, 1100 S. Calhoun St. Discovery Corner Daily in the Discovery Gallery Our youngest visitors are always welcome to visit the Discovery Corner behind Woody the Talking Tree where they’ll find stories and activities relating to a monthly theme: June – Butterflies July – Snouts & Sniffers (Noses) August – ABC’s & 123’s Our materials are all safe and suitable for kids in pre-K through 1st grade. Adults are encouraged to read aloud to their young learners and explore ideas together. The Discovery Corner is free with general admission; pre-registration is not required. Coal Age species no longer exist, but their fossil remains are abundant in coal deposits around the world. Join Dr. Larry Yoder from Goshen College and examine examples of fossilized roots, stems and leaves of Coal Age plants and compare them with living relatives. Included will be photos from a fossil dig in eastern Kentucky that revealed nearly 20 feet of *Lycopod root. *Inside stigmaria ficoides is a vascular tube which runs longitudinally down the length of the root, believed to be a transport structure for fluids and nutrients. BBB: Backyard Bluebirds Thursday, August 28, 12:00-1:00 p.m. Within the past 15 years, Conrad Getz has attracted over 1,000 people to his bird sanctuary and educated them about these warm-blooded egg-laying vertebrates. Although the Battle of Gettysburg did not end the war, nor did it attain any major war aim for the North or the South, it remains the great battle of the war. Instructors Marshall Brinkman and Dick Tagtmeyer share their knowledge of Gettysburg in this 5-week class.
