“Canadian Paralympic ‘FUN’damentals Physical Literacy Resource”
Canadian Paralympic Committee developed free resources for
educators/coaches/recreation leaders. The FUNdamentals Physical
Literacy resources aim to increase participant understanding of
physical literacy, fundamental movement skills and knowledge of
athletics, boccia, goalball and sitting volleyball. This active session
will engage participants in numerous parasport activities and
discussions.

“SnackFit - Bite Sized Physical Activities “
Everyone needs a snack once in a while and having your cupboard
stocked with quick fitness breaks is essential. SnackFits are used to
bring back focus in class or to encourage movement and can be
used during DPA, PE classes or recess. You will leave with a number
of activities for large and small spaces, along with warm ups/cool
down.

“Building Physical Literacy in Children and Youth”
This session will focus on developing athleticism for all using the
Elementary & Secondary Functional Fitness Chart Series developed
by Thompson Educational Publishing. Delegates will take away
strategies on how to easily integrate movement and sport skills,
build fun fitness circuits and exercise in disguise games to get kids
and adults moving.

Amber Muir, Canadian Paralympic Committee
Amber has extensive experience in education, sport, health and
recreation. She graduated with a BPE and an MA. She is enthusiastic
about supporting leaders in PE/activity/sport as they strive to engage
all children and youth in quality PE, activity and healthy living.
Andrea Andrecyk
Andrea is an accomplished athlete who has medaled at 2 World
Disabled Water Ski Championships. As an avid downhill skier she is an
instructor with the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing program in
the National Capital Region. A graduate from St. Lawrence College,
Andrea works as a Graphic Designer.
Lynn Campanella, Playocracy
For the past 13 years Lynn has tried to create opportunities for people
to play in a non-competitive, non-traditional way. Lynn truly enjoys
using her passion of play as the tool to teach so valuable life and social
skills and to encourage physical activity. Since 2013 Lynn has been part
of the Physical Literacy Team for the Hamilton Wentworth District
School Board.
Ted Temertzoglou, Thompson Educational Publishing
Ted has 20 years experience coaching and teaching Health & PE at the
high school level. He's currently the Vice President of Teacher and
Student Success at Thompson Educational Publishing. Ted works with
students, teachers, school boards, physical education organizations and
coaches around the world advocating & implementing quality Physical
and Health Education Programs. He is also a certified personal trainer
with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiologists.

“Halton Concussion Education Program”
This program addresses the need for concussion education for
students. Interactive e-modules help students critically think and
apply their learning to advocate for their safety and the safety of
others. Participants will view the 3 grade specific modules &
resources and consider how they may adopt them in their own
program.

“Physical Literacy 101 – Snapshot”
The goal of the Physical Literacy 101 is to cover a broad
introduction to the concept of physical literacy. During this
presentation, you will take part in an interactive session that will
help you to define what exactly physical literacy means, and how
you can integrate its concepts to improve your programs.

Joanne Walsh, Halton District School Board (HDSB)
Joanne is a former Health & PE Instructional Program Leader for the
HDSB, York University Course Director teaching within the Faculty of
Education and Past President for Ontario Association for the Support of
Physical and Health Educators.
Rebecca Richardson, Halton District School Board (HDSB)
Rebecca is the Health & PE Instructional Program Leader K-12 with
HDSB and 2nd President for Ontario Association for the Support of
Physical and Health Educators.
Mark Verbeek, Hamilton Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB)
Mark is currently the K-12 Physical Education and Healthy Schools
Consultant for HWDSB. He is passionate about the enhancement of
Health & PE in education, recreation and sport. His experience includes
16 years of teaching, coaching and professional sport. He has a BSc in
PE from St.Francis Xavier U., Honours Specialist in H&PE and Special
Education from Queens U. and is a certified Strength & Conditioning
Specialist (National Strength & Conditioning Association).

“PLAY Tools - Introduction “
An introduction to Physical Literacy Assessment for Youth (PLAY)
Tools and how these can be used to track development of physical
literacy skills. During this interactive session, you will receive an
overview of what physical literacy is and knowledge of how you can
encourage continual improvement and development of physical
literacy skills.

“The PLAY Library Exposed! Developing Physical Literacy in the
Home and Community”
This workshop will be both informative and interactive, focusing on
the use of physical activity in fostering the development of physical
literacy skills. The attendees will be exposed to the equipment and

Linda Whitfield, CS4L Kingston Leadership Team
Linda is a longtime active Kingston community member, who is a
passionate advocate for Physical Literacy and healthy living. Linda has
past experience as a workshop facilitator for PHE Canada and
Gymnastics Canada. She is the Community Representative on the CS4L
developmentally appropriate activities outlined in the PLAY Library.
These kits can be borrowed at various locations throughout the

“Fitness Fun Day”
Learn how to organize and run a "Fitness Fun Day" that mobilizes
all sectors of the community. Invite parents, community leaders to
participate in a Fitness Fun Day where students act as health
ambassadors/personal trainers, demonstrating activities and
sharing their expertise. Examples & planning templates will be

“Curling rebrands its school based programs with Canadian Sport
for Life as the catalyst”
The Canadian Curling Association has spent the last year collecting
research from elementary schools, high schools and
colleges/universities. This research will be used to develop a new 3
year school based marketing plan targeted at ages 6-24. The
foundation for this plan is built on the CS4L program and PLAY
tools.

Innovative Programming Highlights
“Exercise is Medicine Canada @ Queen's University”
EIMC @ Queen's is an extension of the national EIM Canada
initiative, working to encourage primary care physicians to promote
exercise and include it in patient treatment care plans. EIMC @
Queen's is the first Canadian university chapter and has initiated a
variety of programs and projects to accomplish the national EIMC's
mandate.

Hilary McKenna, Queen’s University
Hilary is currently doing her MSc at Queen's in Health Promotion, with a
focus on reducing sedentary behaviour in elementary school
classrooms. Hilary has a BEd Degree from the U. of Western Ontario
along with a BSc Degree from McMaster.

Andrea Brennan & Meghan Plotnick, Exercise is Medicine
Andrea and Meghan are graduate students in the School of Kinesiology
and Health Studies at Queen’s. Other members of the council come
from areas including kinesiology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy,
and medicine.
“Breaking Free from Traditional Programming - Managing
Change”
The story of how one sport organization made fundamental
changes to kids' programming despite traditions, systems already in
place & 'working just fine'. There is something for you herewhether you are with a communty sport organization, our
education system, or work with children and youth in after school

Sarah Case, Sail Canada
Sarah is now the Business Development Manager at Sail Canada, where
- since 2005 - she lead groups and managed change in setting updated
standards for programming delivery at clubs and schools across
Canada. Sarah is a 1991 graduate of Queen's PHE program.
“Kingston Revved Up”
Kingston Revved Up is an accessible exercise program for adults
with a mobility impairment and/or developmental disability.
Alongside our volunteer trainers, our clients complete twice weekly
exercise sessions which focus on strength training and
cardiovascular endurance.
Madie Meehan, Kingston Revved Up
Madie is a Queen's Health Studies graduate, has been involved with
Revved Up for 5 years, and is interested in pursuing a career in health
and/or disability policy.

Kristin Côté, Kingston Gets Active (KGA)
Kristin is in her fourth year as KGA coordinator. She holds a MSc in
Exercise Physiology and a secondary teaching degree. She enjoys
working with KGA as it allows her to interact with enthusiastic
volunteers, students, community members and partners on initiatives
that increase physical activity opportunities for all of the community.

“PlaySport: Bright Ideas to Get Moving - Using a Teaching Games
for Understanding (TGfU) Approach”
This workshop outlines the TGfU model, presenting skills and
strategies used in games and activities based on four game
categories: Target, Net/Wall, Striking/Fielding, and Territory.
Examples from the free PlaySport resource will provide participants
with ready-to-go activities and tools for easy implementation.
Lindsay Siple, Ophea
Lindsay is a Projects Leader at Ophea, a not-for-profit organization that
champions healthy, active living in schools and communities. In her
role, Lindsay is involved in resource development, program
implementation and training. She is a dynamic and engaging presenter
who enjoys sharing her passion, expertise and experience with others.

This active session will focus on how physical activity can be an
effective tool in the development of life skills (ie. interpersonal

James Mandigo, Brock University
James is currently the Interim Dean for the Faculty of Applied Health
Sciences at Brock U. His expertise lies in developmental issues
pertaining to sport and physical education. His current research
pertains to the use of sport and PE to develop life skills and the
development of physical literacy amongst children and youth.

“Activity Begins in Childhood - A Physical Activity Intervention
Trial”
This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of the Activity Begins in
Childhood (ABC) intervention delivered in licensed daycare settings
alone or in combination with a parent-driven home physical
activity-promotion component to increase preschoolers’ overall
physical activity levels and specifically time spent in moderate to
vigorous physical activity.
Kimberly Grattan, Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research
Institute
Kimberly is a research coordinator at the Children's Hospital of Eastern
Ontario Research Institute with the Healthy Active Living and Obesity
research department. Kimberly specializes in measurement,
observation, and specifically coordinating the Activity Begins in
Childhood trial. She has extensive experience with gross motor
assessments and physical activity monitoring devices.

John is the president of CIRA Ontario and a retired professor of PE at

The Kingston Frontenac Public Library has introduced a new
program, "Play to Learn" which combines physical literacy with
reading readiness. Learn tips and tricks to incorporate movement
and sport skills along with text. Resources from KFPL’s collection
will also be highlighted.

Stephanie is a Program Manager at PHE Canada where her initiatives

research focused on peer victimization in PE. Her career began teaching
PE in the arctic. Stephanie is enthusiastic about supporting leaders as
they strive to engage children & youth in physical activity.
Sasha Alexov, Physical and Health Education Canada
Sasha is a Program Coordinator at PHE Canada where her initiatives are
focused on physical literacy and physical education. Sasha completed a
BHK and a BEd specializing PE at St. Francis Xavier U. She has worked
with aboriginal children in grades 5-7 in an after-school program
focusing on outdoor education. Sasha believes that all children have a
right to be physically active and to acquire knowledge through physical
activity to live an active lifestyle.
Brianne Peters, Kingston Frontenac Public Library
Brianne attended Brock U. for Child and Youth Studies before obtaining
her MSc in Library and Information Science at Western U.
Meredith Westcott, Kingston Frontenac Public Library (KFPL)
Meredith has worked for KFPL since her high school days and has been
working full-time in the Programming & Outreach department since
1998. Meredith keeps active by adding plenty of movement in her
storytime sessions & keeping up with her lively Teen Advisory Group.
Angela Kimmett, YMCA
Angela is the General Manager of the YMCA of Kingston, overseeing 3
locations in the city. She has been serving in this post for 10 years.
“Youth Friendly Checklist for Program Development”
An outline of the development and possible usefullness in program
development of the Youth Friendly Program Checklist developmed
as part of the Kingston Youth Strategy.
Chris Paterson, City of Kingston
Chris is a recreation programmer with the City of Kingston focusing on
children and youth. He's been working in this role since 2006 but has
worked with children and youth since 1998. Highlights of his current
portfolio include municipal day camps, afterschool drop ins, interest
courses and involvement in the K2K Youth Strategy.
“If you want to be a Penguin, a Penguin you shall be: An inclusive
approach to sport and recreation”
The Brock Niagara Penguins is a competitive and recreational
program for youth and adults with a disability, and one if it’s kind in
the Niagara region. This presentation will speak to the vision and
values of the Penguins, and to the importance of involving people
with a disability in sport and recreational opportunities. It will also
testify to the success of the program, exemplified through expert
programming, appropriate environment and supports, and the
removal of barriers.
