KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Elizabeth Strout was born in Portland,
Maine, and grew up in small towns in Maine
and New Hampshire. From a young age she
was drawn to writing things down, keeping
notebooks that recorded the quotidian details
of her days. She was also drawn to books, and
spent hours of her youth in the local library
lingering among the stacks of fiction.
During her adolescent years, Strout continued writing avidly, having conceived
of herself as a writer from early on. She read biographies of writers, and was
already studying – on her own – the way American writers, in particular, told
their stories. Poetry was something she read and memorized; by the age of
sixteen was sending out stories to magazines. Her first story was published
when she was twenty-six.
ART GALLERY
Thanks to the generous contributions of more than 30 Maine based artists,
ILAP is proud to bring back art for sale to this event. In the past, we have used
a silent auction to sell art, this year we are offering it for purchase based on the
value assigned by the artist.
Each artist has donated 50-100% of the purchase price to ILAP to support our
important social justice work in the community. When you purchase any piece
here this evening, ILAP benefits, so thanks for looking and we hope you are
inspired to take some home.
The Gallery is open 6:00- 9:00 PM. Our process allows for you to pay for and
take home your piece tonight.
Art will be available to pick up starting at 7:15 PM. To purchase art, please see
an attendant in the Gallery.
Strout attended Bates College, graduating with a degree in English in 1977. Two
years later, she went to Syracuse University College of Law, where she received
a law degree along with a Certificate in Gerontology. She worked briefly for
Legal Services, before moving to New York City, where she became an adjunct
in the English Department of Borough of Manhattan Community College.
Juggling the needs that came with raising a family and her teaching schedule, she
found a few hours each day to work on her writing.
ILAP is deeply grateful for Elizabeth’s participation in CeleSoiree this year and
for her publisher’s support of her appearance here.
PERFORMERS
Olas is heavily influenced by traditional Flamenco, expressed through a
musical blend of American folk, rock, Arabic and West African sounds, palmas,
original Spanish verse, and Contemporary Flamenco choreographies. Thier work
is all original and celebrates the power and importance of music and dance.
Voix des Anges means “voices of angels” in French, one of the native
languages of this choral group made up of people from all over the African
continent. This group organized through a local church, Sacred Heart, in
Portland and sing often for both worship and secular occasions. There are 15
voices in this group.
Thank you, ILAP...
...for strengthening
our communities and
improving the lives
of Maine families.

Shamso, family reunification
Shamso spent a decade trying to reunite with her youngest child,
Abdirashid, until ILAP was able to help her bring him to the U.S. Shamso
had not seen her son since he was 9 months old, when they were
separated during the civil war in Somalia. She fled the country and came
to the U.S. as a refugee with her other four children, and spent years
trying to bring Abdirashid here. She took many wrong turns after being
given inaccurate information, and she was distraught thinking she might
never see him again. ILAP helped Shamso become a U.S. Citizen and then
helped her apply to bring Abdirashid to the U.S. The case was especially
complicated because Abdirashid did not have a birth certificate and could
not get a passport, due to the lack of a Somali government. After much
advocacy and Congressional intervention, Abdirashid’s case was finally
approved and he now lives happily with his family in Maine!
Halima, human trafficking
After fleeing civil war as a young child and surviving years of indentured
servitude, Halima has finally found safety and security in Maine. She was
trafficked to the United States by a family who had kept her as a slave
since the age of ten in Djibouti. The family took her to New York, where
she was mistreated, was not fed or allowed to leave their apartment, or
communicate with her family. She managed to escape from their home and
ended up in Maine, where she came to ILAP for help. ILAP represented
Halima in a special “T” trafficking visa, which was approved, and she now has
legal status and is free for the first time in her adult life.
NOTE: you can only purchase this raffle ticket by making a $65 donation using
the QR code here and on the 3 Safarka Raffle locations marked by (color)
balloons around the room during the Social Hour, or at the Registration table
if you don’t use a smartphone. Each code links to an ILAP client story that we
hope inspires you.
The raffle winner will be drawn at the end of the program
following the other raffle winners.
Javier, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status
Now getting ready to graduate high school in southern Maine, Javier
is looking at his options for college, but his journey started in a small
Honduran town, where he was abandoned by his parents and needed to
escape the dangers of gang violence. He and a cousin fled to the U.S. border,
where they were detained by Immigration because they didn’t have visas.
Javier was released for immigration court and ended up in Maine, where he
enrolled in school and became friends with a boy on his soccer team, whose
mother became his guardian. Javier came to ILAP for help with his legal
status and ILAP represented him in a “special immigrant juvenile petition,”
for children who have been abandoned, neglected or abused. Javier now has
a green card, has excelled in school and is a star on the soccer team. His
host family considers him part of the family, and he was in the family picture
on their annual Christmas card that they sent to his ILAP lawyer.
Keep up with Maine.
