The NRMP reported that of the total 25,687 applicants who successfully matched to first-year positions, 16,399 were U.S. medical school seniors, with 5.6 percent not matching. The NRMP reported a modest increase in U.S. seniors choosing primary care and 80.8 percent of U.S. seniors and 81.2 percent of independent applicants matched to one of their top three choices. Milestone use and reporting has begun for some specialties and will become effective for all other specialties by December 2015. All subspecialties that are linked to Next Accreditation System Phase I core specialties and some associated with Phase II specialties, including General Surgery and Surgical Subspecialties will report on the Milestones in December 2014. All other subspecialties will formally begin to use the Milestones in 2015. To make the certification and Maintenance of Certification (MOC) process more intuitive, the American Board of Surgery is transitioning its certificates from the academic year to the calendar year. To begin this transition, all current ABS certificates have been extended six months to December 31. All current ABS certificates now expire on December 31 of the year of expiration, rather than July 1. Diplomates may print verification of this new expiration date from the ABS website. Circulating pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF or IL-1, are cleared by the liver and secreted in the bile. Systemic inflammation leads to cytokine reabsorption due to impaired enteric barrier. Microbeads can absorb cytokines from the enteric lumen and interrupt the entero-hepatic loop hence reducing systemic inflammation. This approach could be useful for the treatment of multisystem organ failure and autoimmune conditions. The absorbent beads are being developed for clinical trials. MATCH DAY 2014!
