It’s February and I hope you are enjoying the Winter Bob Epstein
Season. I don’t want you to think that this is sarcastic, but I Editor in Chief
am writing this column at the beginning of January and the
temperature is 30 and clear. When you read it in February
we might be knee deep in you know what.
As you know, we have had an increase in maintenance of 2.6 per cent.
An increase that I believe is necessary for the work that has to be done.
What I don’t understand, is why the trustee president and vice president
work up the numbers and then they and the other members of their group
vote to approve it, without ever getting any suggestions, input or advice
from the other 1550 home owners of Covered Bridge. A few years ago
our Trustees stated that they would run the CBCA in the same fashion
that the township does. The township presents the township budget at
an open meeting and then four weeks later they vote on the budget at
another open meeting, allowing for input, suggestions and alternatives
from the residents of the township. Here at Covered Bridge the budget
of over 3 million dollars, is presented and without any deliberations is
passed within an hour by the same group who put it together.
This policy of the exclusion of the members of the CBCA, extends
beyond the budget, and affects every aspect of the CBCA operations, and
I am sure that it will continue until those who have been elected realize
that we are all members and should be part of the process not outsiders
looking in. Working together could only benefit Covered Bridge.

Chapter 4
On Sunday, Dec. 14, 35 ladies boarded a bus at the
Township parking lot and set off for a short drive to
Georgian Court in Lakewood, NJ. Chapter 4 sponsored
a trip to join Mrs. Gould as she hosted her 13th Annual Holiday Social. There was actually a mix up with
tickets for the afternoon performance so the 11a.m.
performance was just for Chapter 4. It was truly a
lovely gesture on the part of the entertainment troupe.
We started with a self tour of the mansion including the lovely white marble chapel that was built by
the Gould family. Lindsor tarts were passed around to
all of us as the entertainment began. The performance
continued as we got seated in the main ballroom
which was decorated so lovely in the period manner.
Singing and dancing began as Mrs. Gould made her
way down the marble staircase to the great room with
a lovely fireplace, Christmas tree and many holiday
decorations.
After an hour long holiday show we were served
delicate tea sandwiches, pastries and tea, as well as
apple cider. After the meal the show continued and at
the conclusion the actors handed out lovely holiday
ornaments to each of us and came table to table to
speak with us and answer any questions that the guests
might have.
It was a lovely luncheon and a great way to start
the holiday season. This was Chapter 4’s third trip of
the year and we are looking forward to some great
events in 2015. Please keep an eye out for our dates
for our next and future trips of the year. Good things
are coming.
Hope you all had a wonderful holiday.
Thank you,
Rose Profeta and Carolee Trifon Chapter 4
The Levi Solomon Barn
Located in Freehold, NJ, the second floor measures 3000 square feet and this space served as the
hayloft for large amounts of hay and feed to feed the
animals living in the first floor space. You will see that
the overhead ceiling is made of the original hand cut
cedar shingles and two centuries ago such construction was considered state of the art roofing. Wooden
pegs can still be seen from the original post and beam
construction. In the mid 1800’s a water tank was built
and installed by a company in Batavia, Illinois. This
bam has been designated as an historic landmark by
the Township of Freehold. This barn is one of the largest barn structures left in Monmouth County.
Here comes the interesting part! The barn was
moved from its original foundation and now is known
as the JHMOMC. The Jewish Heritage Museum of
Monmouth County sits in a quaint little strip mall just
a few steps from the favorite Top Tomato store. They
are open Tues., Thurs., and Sunday and the tour of the
museum is “FREE” - there is even a lift for those who
cannot climb the steps. They sometimes show their
photography exhibit - Monmouth County’s Jewish
Experience in pictures. There is a short film about
the life and accomplishments of the well renowned
photographers Annie Liebowitz and Richard Avedon.
They have built a stage and have a beautiful piano for
music and concerts.
Reasonable and well known entertainment can be
seen at the museum and I understand that many of our
Covered Bridge residents are members.
If you are interested in visiting or have any questions please call 732-252-6990 for information about
membership or tickets for upcoming events.
Mary, Bea and I are revisiting our adventures and
bringing them back to you. More to come next month.

Message From the HOCB Board
In the 1970’s when Covered Bridge was created, there were no rentals. All the members of the CBCA
were home owners. The HOCB (Home Owners of Covered Bridge) was created and incorporated as a
voice of the home owners. The CBCA board included representatives of the builders (The Hovnanian Organization). Now the CBCA has allowed Covered Bridge to become a rental community. The number of
rentals is approaching 700. Many of these renters are willing and anxious to participate in the activities of
the HOCB, but are reluctant because of the name. The HOCB is contemplating the change of the name of
the organization to Residents of Covered Bridge (ROCB). The legal process will take some time, but will
be in the best interest of the community. Watch the Guardian for more information as it becomes available.

One of the most frequent conditions that I have
treated for the past 33 years is patients with Diabetes.
People with diabetes can develop many different foot
problems. Even ordinary problems can get worse and
lead to serious complications.
Foot problems most often happen when there is
nerve damage, also called neuropathy. This can cause
tingling, pain (burning or stinging), or weakness in
the foot. It can also cause loss of feeling in the foot,
so you can injure it and not know it. Poor blood flow
or changes in the shape of your feet or toes may also
cause problems.
Although it can hurt, diabetic nerve damage can
also lessen your ability to feel pain, heat, and cold.
Loss of feeling often means you may not feel a foot
injury. You could have a tack or stone in your shoe and
walk on it all day without knowing. You could get a
blister and not feel it. You might not notice a foot injury until the skin breaks down and becomes infected.
Nerve damage can also lead to changes in the
shape of your feet and toes. Ask your podiatrist about
special therapeutic shoes, rather than forcing deformed
feet and toes into regular shoes.
Diabetes can cause changes in the skin of your
foot. At times your foot may become very dry. The
skin may peel and crack. The problem is that the
nerves that control the oil and moisture in your foot
no longer work.
After bathing, dry your feet and seal in the remaining moisture with a thin coat of plain petroleum jelly,
an unscented hand cream, or other such products.
Do not put oils or creams between your toes. The
extra moisture can lead to infection. Also do not soak
your feet, that can dry your skin.
Calluses occur more often and build up faster on
the feet of people with diabetes. This is because there
are high pressure areas under the foot. Too much callus may mean that you will need therapeutic shoes
and inserts.
Calluses if not trimmed, get very thick, break
down, and turn into ulcers (open sores). Never try to
cut calluses or corns yourself. This can lead to ulcers
and infections. Let your podiatrist cut your calluses.
Also, do not try to remove calluses and corns with
chemical agents. These products can burn your skin.
Using a pumice stone every day will help keep calluses
under control. It is best to use the pumice stone on wet
skin. Put on lotion right after you use the pumice stone.
There are many other conditions that effect the
diabetic foot. I will discuss them in future articles. In
the meantime, it is a very good idea that if you suffer
from diabetes, you visit your podiatrist on a regular
basis to help avoid those problems which, when left
untreated, may lead to very serious complications.

Chanukah Party
Chanukah is a celebration of candle-lighting - and
a happy holiday for all to enjoy.
Hilda Geller and I got things started by shopping
for new decorations and by getting estimates for the
traditional foods necessary. Many purchases were
made.
Thanks to the CB office with Louise, Joan and
the other staff members for the extraordinary help by
getting a multitude of problems solved and putting
aside other responsibilities.
The many volunteers were a tremendous load
off Hilda’s and my backs. The organizing by Jacky
O’Hagan with her ladies ... the music and songs from
Manny Stone’s crew ... my sister-in-law Gloria Watzky
helping on the food line ... the Trustee Mickey La
Barbera, ever ready to pitch in ... with Anita Parachini
eager to help in the kitchen ... the help and advice
from Vice President of CHHS Leo Rosenzweig ...
Ms. Ross ready for any eventuality in kitchen and on
the food line ... the arrangement of tables and chairs
thanks to office help in the Ballroom ... Robert fixing
the electricity ... repairing of the large Menorah by
Lou Potesto....
And that’s how it all came together, because of the
above mentioned volunteers and the others I hope that
I haven’t forgotten...

GUEST EDITORIAL
Happy New Year to all our friends at Covered Bridge. The Manalapan
Township Reorganization Meeting was held on Friday, January 2ND Jack McNaboe, Mayor
@ 3 PM in town hall. With many from Covered Bridge in attendance, Susan Cohen & Jack
McNaboe were sworn in again onto the Manalapan Township Committee after being reelected
last November. I, Jack McNaboe was then sworn in as Mayor & MaryAnn Musich as Deputy
Mayor. A special Thank You to our LT. Governor Kim Guadagno for thanking time our of her
busy schedule to administer the oath of office and attend the meeting on such a special day.
Thanks for allowing me to write this guest column. We have seen many of you recently
at the Veteran Day events as well as the Christmas & Chanukah celebration around town and
in the Covered Bridge Ballroom. Remember all of your governing body and township staff is
available to answer any of your question - concerns and provide guidance as the need arises.
A very special THANK YOU to all Covered Bridge Residents who volunteer to participate
in the various Township boards - committees & commissions in Manalapan. Anyone who did
not fill out a volunteer application my do so on line @ MTNJ.org or stop at administation and
do it in person, positions are always available. “Manalapan is a Great Place To Live” because
of the countless volunteer hours donated to the town on behalf of our residents. Thank You for
your time- expertise and devotion to Manalapan.
As I write this column we have been lucky with the weather. Our storms have been mainly
rain events and snow dusting. Temperatures are cold but that is winter in New Jersey. Let us
hope it is a long time before we have a winter like last year. Rest assure that your Department
of Public Works stands ready for whatever emergency that comes our way.
Please use caution during these winter months. Please know that your Manalapan Township
Police are ready 24 / 7/ 365 days a year should an emergency arise. Equally devoted to your
safety is a top notch fire service and an EMS squad that will be “State of the Art” for 2015 in
First Aid & Hospital Transport Service.
Anyone wanting to express concerns - convey ides or state opinions on what we get right
or what we can do better is always welcome at [email protected] if something bothers you
it may trouble others as well. Sign up for “Shop Manalapan” if you have not already done so.
May 2015 be a great year for all.

What’s Your Opinion?
(Letters to the Editor)
It is time that the all the residents of CB step up
Dear Fellow Residents,
I am the President of the Covered Bridge Condo
Reps - a group of dedicated volunteers.
I never thought I would be put in a position where
I had to defend these VOLUNTEERS but sadly that
time has come.
“WHY DON’T THE CONDO REPS ATTEND
CLOSED TRUSTEE MEETINGS” - AS STATED
IN LAST MONTH’S NEWSLETTER - President’s
Report????????
Since I took office almost 2 years ago - I and my
fellow volunteers have been met with nothing but
disrespect - harassment and disdain - especially
when we attended the Closed Trustee meetings once
a month. We came with a prepared agenda-comments
and questions - all with the residents of Covered
Bridge in mind.
We were met with only negativity - every response
by the President of the Trustees was to blame the past
boards - of which he served on!! Nothing we said or
proposed was ever even considered and we always
left feeling beaten down and disrespected. We were
continually asked “What do Condo Reps do?!” And I
was told I could no longer publish a summary of what
we did each month without the President’s approval.
At present - there are multiple items the president
is trying to dictate to us by his personal interpretation
of the By-Laws. This is not dictatorship last time I
checked and we will not be dictated to - he can save
that for his Trustees.
Everyone seems to miss the point - The Condo
Reps are Volunteers. So you ask why is the president
critical of us??
Because instead of putting the needs and wellbeing
of ALL the residents of Covered Bridge first and
foremost - he is continuing to carry out a personal
vendetta against certain Condo Reps - who in his
words are “LOSERS” - either former Trustees or past
candidates that ran for a Trustee’s position.
This certainly is getting in his way of working
with the Condo Reps - we can and do serve a needed
purpose. The “go-between” for residents and trustees
to handle minor issues and problems - please utilize
us for this not as your personal whipping post.
These Condo Reps care about Covered Bridge
more than most residents and are willing to give
their time - energy and expertise to improve our community and many of us are involved in the township
and volunteer on numerous committees - giving CB
a presence in the community - Our Trustee President
does neither and is nowhere to be found and doesn’t
even attend Township meetings.
to the plate - you are allowing a President that was
elected by less than 200 votes in a community with
1557 units to make all financial decisions for you
and your home? Sid would rather live in the past and
continually will drag up items and issues that occurred years ago - most people don’t know or even
remember or more importantly CARE! - but this is
where he spend most of his energies - not sure why.
But of course the past also includes the times he was
removed from the board.
We are told we are not “official” because we
weren’t elected - well we welcome an election by the
residents - but as per your President - “cost too much
to oversee an election,” Yet we Reps take the brunt of
the comments of some residents regarding our “unofficial status”!
SO WE WILL CHALLENGE THE TRUSTEE
PRESIDENT - EITHER HOLD AN ELECTION
OR QUIT GRIPPING ABOUT US.
We have advertised for new Reps and no one has
responded - another complaint of our President that I
only wish to appoint my friends? Why would I want
to do that? - Last time I checked the perks and benefits
weren’t all that great - but this is another example of
our President’s behavior towards the Reps.
So just to set the record straight Sid - you will get
your wish - a Condo Rep board member will be in
attendance at all future Closed Trustee meetings!
Please check the Condo Rep page - there are new
assignments for certain areas - please note who your
rep is and come to us with your concerns - and contrary
to some - we are here to assist you all and make life
at Covered Bridge the best it can be.
So all we ask - work with us - the Best is yet
to come!
Happy and Healthy New Year to all.

Working with the Trustees?
The following is taken from Sidney Leveson’s
email of 1/11/2015 sent to Linda Steele regarding
his objection of the Condo Reps: “I will continue to
inform the public about individuals that I believe have
- 14 -
Continued on page 15
WHAT’S YOUR OPINION? (Cont. from Page 14)
done a poor job in the past or are doing so at present
and are seeking to do so again.” Let’s analyze his statement: as usual this is only his opinion and not facts.
To show you the difference between his opinion
and my facts I state facts such as the following. This
is the meeting minutes of June 8, 2005 State Civil
Service Commission, in the matter of Sidney M. Leveson Department of Public Works, REMOVAL AND
RESIGNATION NOT IN GOOD STANDING. Isn’t
anyone else curious why he was REMOVED from a
civil service job in Marlboro? Now he has the nerve to
attack and judge other people. It’s about time people
realize that he is not the next coming. His Flaws are too
numerous to list. Remember there was a reason why
he was removed from two different CBCA boards,
and that is not opinion, that’s fact.
We all have flaws, some more than others and with
all his flaws he had no right to judge others and he has
now admitted he has a list and if he is keeping score
he does not deserve to sit as President of our Board
of Trustees or even on the Board at all; let him let go
of the list be fair to all and GROW UP.
Paul Profeta,
Co-Chair Condo Reps
The Trustee President Sid Leveson, in his
message, continues his attack of me and the other
residents of Covered Bridge who don’t agree
with his decisions and actions. Yes, his decisions,
because you never hear from the other Trustees,
who he evidently controls. I will respond to his
letter in the March issue of the Guardian, because
too many of the residents, who Sid disagrees with,
sent in letters to this February issue. I am not a
hard guy to get along with, but until our Trustee
President realizes this, I will continue to be the
voice of the residents of Covered Bridge.
Bob Epstein
To the Residents of Covered
Bridge,
My wish for the New Year 2015 is for constructive
meetings between HOCB and CBCA for the benefit of
our residents. Inter/house bickering and grand standing
is old news. We need to let the residents be involved
in decision making: even though the CBCA board has
the final word. We need an open door policy where a
resident can know what their money is used for before
it is voted on.
Residents: Care what’s going in Covered Bridge,
you live here. Whether an owner or renter, you have
a voice USE IT. There are people who are trying to
look out for you. Help us do that.
Pat Russo
1st Vice President HOCB
President of Christian Neighbors and Friends
An Open Letter to the
Trustees of
Covered Bridge
I am writing this letter because your President’s
Message, which he says you all approve, has accused
me of making unsupported statements.
In the last article that I wrote for The Guardian
I quoted sources including the New Jersey Health
Department that stated that the second ingredient in
Trimec 992 is a carcinogen. It is a Chlorophenoxy
Herbicide and the New Jersey Health Department
says that there is evidence that these herbicides cause
cancer of the lymphatic system in humans.
In June of 2014, in Toxopedia, Steven Gilbert
states that 2,4-D, the first ingredient in Trimec 992
is a chlorophenoxy chemical as well. Obviously this
means that it too is a carcinogen.
The United States Courts have decided that a
forestry worker contracted cancer and died as a direct
result of his exposure to 2,4-D. This was printed in
Pesticides News No.37.
By continuing to allow these chemicals to be
sprayed in Covered Bridge, you subject every resident,
including yourselves, to the hazards it presents. Every
time a resident is diagnosed with Cancer, the possibility exists that it began in his or her body as a result of
coming in contact with this herbicide.
Do you really believe that this is the right thing
to do?
Do you really think that this is fulfilling your
obligation to the people who trusted and elected you?
Continued on page 16
- 15 -
WHAT’S YOUR OPINION? (Cont. from Page 15)
Do you really believe that you are protecting the
residents from harm as the Master Deed requires you
to do?
If you do, then you certainly are not the people
that we thought you were!
My statements are supported. It is yours that are
not. You have yet to show us the bids that you got from
landscapers for non toxic sprays but continue to insist
that they are too expensive.
You delight in repeatedly saying that you completely follow all the precautions stated on the Trimec
992 label. Except for the fact that photos prove that all
the men who spray here wear no protective clothing.
This is not only not following the label’s precautions
but is most definitely an OSHA violation as well. There
are alternatives available for killing weeds and/or
growing grass that is resistant to them but you will not
even meet with us to consider them. So, you not only
make unsupported statements but you are unreasonable as well. A major disappointment to people like
me who thought you were the good guys.
Carole Fishkind, Chairperson
The Resident Committee to Stop Toxic Spraying
Cars, Cars and Trucks
It’s my understanding as per the last resolution or
changing for parking rules that our dedicated spots
are to be occupied by vehicles that have been registered with the office at CBCA, must have a parking
sticker issued by our office, and must have a current
registration and be in working order. If that is correct
I request that the limo at 65 which has expired registration and has several flat tires and is not in running
order, the storage van at 129 in worse condition and
the automobile at our own Presidents building which
is again not in working order, has no sticker and also
has expired registration as well as being a junk vehicle, be removed in accordance with our rules and
regulations and if not set fines as per the Boards list of
regulations for fines. It’s bad enough that this 55 and
over Active Adult Community is becoming a Rental
Community with few restrictions. The least we can
ask of our Trustees is to keep it in decent condition
and if we have to abide by their rules, everyone else
should have to do the same thing.
At last count, according to our VP, rentals were
over 650 units and that conversation I had in May
around election time. There is no way to stop this
now, its out of control and now CBCA has become
landlords too. Is this a good thing? What is the cost to
repair these old units for occupancy and what effect do
the rents have on the over $300,000.00 in back condo
fees. And can we have an explanation as to why that
figure, which is owed to us, is absent from the budget?
Guess we could ask the lawyer but I think he already
gave his opinion.
Inquiring minds would like to know.
Carolee Trifon
2015 Manalapan
Township Reorganization
On Friday, January 2, 2015 at 3pm, our Manalapan
Township Committee held its reorganization meeting.
Each year at this time, a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor
are elected by the sitting Committee. Most time the
Mayoral seat and Deputy Mayor seat are rotated since
each member of our Township is more than capable
to hold the titile of Mayor. They do not elect a Mayor
over and over and over again. It’s a sharp contrast to
our own Covered Bridge government where the now
sitting President has convinced the other members of
his Board that he is the only one qualified to be our
President. If that is truly the case we desparately need
a new Board of Trustees because 20 years from now
this man might still be President.
The two newly elected Committee members,
Mayor Susan Cohen and Deputy Mayor Jack McNaboe were sworn in by acting Governor Kim Guadagno.
As busy as she is, she still found time to come and
honor us with her presence. Thank you Governor Kim
Guadagno! And thank you to our Freeholder Board
members, our Monmouth County Sheriff Shawn
Golden, head of OEM, plus, plus and plus Rick Hogan, Dave Richardson, our Police Chief and members
of many township committees.
Our former Mayor Jordan Moskowitz nominated
Deputy Mayor Jack Naboe for the Office of Mayor
for 2015. Nomination was seconded and the vote was
5-0 for our new Mayor. After being sworn is with his
family by his side, the new Mayor nominated Committeewoman Mary Ann Musich to hold the office of
Deputy Mayor. Again motion had a second and vote
was 5-0. With her sister by her side, Committeewoman
Musich was sworn in as Deputy Mayor. We have a
commitment from and new committee to help keep
taxes down and to always be available to all of our
residents.
Volunteer committee members were appointed
for 2015 and if anyone in Covered Bridge would like
to volunteer for any of the committees please call the
Township for information.
In closing let me make this comment. As you can
see by the photo, Covered Bridge had a nice turnout to
support our Township Committee. There were several
residents, the chair and co-chair of our Condo Reps,

These committee members are front and center when

refreshments were served after the meeting.

CBCA
Sid Leveson, President
Dear Mr. President;
As the New Year begins, and as you have stated
“In the spirit of working together”. I am once again
volunteering for the House Committee, the Budget
Committee, and the Election Committee. My qualifications for appointment to each of these committees
have been sent to you previously. These committees
are required by our by-laws with a liaison to the Board
of Trustees.
Sincerely;
Bob Epstein

PS> Please respond before Januuary 10, 2015, as
that is my deadline for the Guardian Magazine, and
this letter and your response will be included in the
next edition. Please also include specific reasons for
making your decision.
This is the response received from Mr. Leveson on
behalf of the Trustees.
Your January 2, 2015 letter repeats demands for
which you have already received the answer along
with reasons for your rejection. Moreover, you are
misrepresenting the By-Laws, which state that
Sect. 5-10 q. “The Board of Trustees of
the Association may appoint committees as
deemed appropriate in carrying out its purposes.”
Also we previously noted that there are no requirements regarding when non-Trustees should be
on committees.
Now you are demanding the timing and method of
our response. You have a strange idea of the meaning
of the word “cooperation.”
Please check the March issue for the response to
this response.

Alex J. Worth the Township Tax Assessor asks, what’s your home worth?
The Real Property Assessment Demonstration Pilot Program, signed into law by Governor Christie in
January 2013 is well under way in the Township of Manalapan. This pilot program modifies five major
components of the current tax assessment system. The changes include market driven annual reassessments,
increased education requirements for Assessors, a restructuring of the assessment calendar, standardization of
assessment software and legislative refinement. This law aims to increase the accuracy and transparency of
the current assessment function while reducing the overall cost to the taxpayer.
One of the most noteworthy changes is the annual reassessment of all properties within the municipality. A
yearly valuation will be supported by an interior/exterior inspection cycle every five years. This data collection
process will ensure that all property record cards are accurate and up to date. In the old model, a home was
inspected and valued typically every 10 years. The assessment you received remained unchanged however,
did you know this value required the use of a ratio or fraction in order to find your home’s implied market
value? For example, a homeowner feels his home is worth $150,000. He receives an assessed value of 100,000
and is satisfied he is under-assessed. However, at a 50% ratio he has an implied market value of $200,000
(l00,000/.50) and is in fact over-assessed. This would result in an over payment of property taxes due to a lack
of understanding the assessment-to-market-value ratio system. This misunderstanding of the current fractional
assessment system and “implied market values” annually leads to countless taxpayers failing to protect their
tax obligations. The Assessment Demonstration Program seeks to permanently remedy this problem. Moving
forward within Monmouth County, this law eliminates the fractional assessments system and replaces it with
a system that annually revises the assessment to be equal to current market value. The new system will now
be responsive to the changes in the market on an annual basis. In the old model taxpayers had to prove the
assessment was significantly off before receiving reduction. In the new model, there is no build-in margin for
error for the town, if the assessment is proven to be $1 off then it gets adjusted by way of an assessment appeal.
The new modification of the assessment calendar allows the loss from county board appeals to be realized prior to the adoption of the budget. This will reduce the need for emergency bonding for anticipated but
uncollected revenue due to appeal losses. The annual assessment notification post card date has changed as
well; you will now receive your card in the pre-tax year, on or about November 15th . The appeal deadline to
appeal your assessed value is now January 15th (Note: the 2015 appeal deadline has been extended to January
20th). If you agree with the assessed value of your home no action is required. If you disagree with the assessed value, you may file an appeal with the Monmouth County Board of Taxation. Forms, instructions, and
a guide to the process “Understanding Property Assessment Appeals for Monmouth County” may be obtained
at http://secure.njappealonline.com.
The overarching goal of the program is to provide a more responsive, accurate, and fair model of property
assessment. We aim to not only reduce costs by leveraging technology and advanced appraisal techniques, but
enhance the services to the taxpayers of Manalapan by annually delivering more accurate assessments that in
due course will earn the trust of the taxpayer.

CREATIVE WRITING
February
It seems like Winter surfaces more hurriedly than
any other time of the year... February is in the middle
of time, namely after the holiday festivities and long
before the start of future holidays. It is a time for
self-indulgence.
From October to a new February I have come
to realize the true essence of Covered Bridge. The
peoples within are uniformly related. Each one has
reached the age of acceptance. We accept our past as
it was, with reduced passion. We accept as adequate,
the years we have attained and the reduced stamina
which accompanies it. Contentment has fallen on us
like a cashmere blanket, easy and free from constraint.
Each day presents a new challenge. Apprehensions, on
and off again feelings of joy and sadness exist in the
day to day life of all, here in Covered Bridge. Life is
good, as long as you know you are not alone. Every
month carries a special endowment for us to exploit,
and that is comforting to know, and so, onward to the
winds of March!!!!!
Mary Mirabile
Our Time Together
At some point in our lives each of us contributed
to the welfare of our fellowman.
Many moons ago plans were drafted to erect
pyramids, homes, and roadways. As each century
benefited from man made conveniences surrounding
the land, we prospered. Railroads for transportation
were needed and the rails were expertly fitted by the
iron worker’s of the land. Then came the magic of
Airways, a travel system put together by great minds.
The inventors, the builders and organizers rely on
each other to successfully complete these projects.
The present day wonders of the world were made
possible by the contributions of the industrious minds
of yesterday and today. Many lives were lost in the
process, death resulting from achievement to improve
our existence.
More men and women have died from the wages
of war than those who have perished providing for the
welfare of the people.
We can accept death from natural causes, and
unavoidable tragedies, as opposed to a bullet made
legal by the act of war....
Mary Mirabile
Not knowing the author, keep this in mind when
making your next trip reservation.
Committee work is hardly sweet
When someone squawks about his seat
Please believe it’s no simple task
To seat you all just as you ask.
We pray someday a great inventor
Will plan a bus all dead center
In short, a bus so well designed
With none in front, and none behind.
If you feel your seat’s not right
Lay down your arms - do not fight
We all have learned through care and strife
Position is not everything in life.

Old Folks Are
Worth a Fortune
Old folks are worth a fortune. With silver in their
hair, gold in their teeth, stones in their kidneys, lead
in their feet and gas in their stomachs.
I have become a lot more social with the passing
of the years; some might even call me a frivolous old
gal. I’m seeing five gentlemen every day.
As soon as I wake, Will Power helps me get out of
bed. Then I go see John. Then Charley Horse comes
along, and when he is here, he takes a lot of my time
and attention. When he leaves, Arthur Ritis shows up
and stays the rest of the day. (He doesn’t like to stay
in one place very long, so he takes me from joint to
joint). After such a busy day, I’m really tired and glad
to go to bed - with Ben Gay. What a life!
P.S. The preacher came to call the other day. He
said that at my age, I should be thinking about the
here-after. I told him I do - all the time. No matter
where I am - in the parlor, upstairs in the kitchen or
down in the basement - I ask myself, “Now, what am
I here after?”

And to All a Good Night
‘Twas the night before Christmas and down here in
Boca,
I was sitting at Starbucks, drinking my mocha.
I know we’re all Jewish, but was wondering still,
If Santa would come here and give us a thrill.
On my way home, no Christmas lights did I see,
On the houses, the windows, not even the trees.
What a strange feeling, not a decoration in sight.
Was it really December or a warm summer’s night?
I drove past Toojay’s, there were lines out the door.
People were waiting for kishka and more.
The restaurants were busy, Christmas dinners not
planned.
Never, not here we’re in Boca Land.
At home all was quiet, I left out Kosher wine,
In case Santa came to Boca for the very first time.
Snoozing came easy to me Christmas Eve.
I wasn’t waiting for presents to be left under a tree.
I could hope all I want, I could fuss and then see,
If Santa would make time for little old me.
Then all of a sudden he pulled up in his Jag,
With a sack full of presents each sporting a tag.
Oh Bloomies, oh Saks, oh Nieman’s and more.
He knows where to shop, he frequents my stores!
He looked for the lox, the bagels and deli.
He came to Boca first to fill up his belly!

Their Diaries

Wife’s Diary:
Tonight, I thought my husband was acting weird.
We had made plans to meet at a nice restaurant for
dinner. I was shopping with my friends all day long,
so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit
late, but he made no comment on it.
Conversation wasn’t flowing, so I suggested that
we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed,
but he didn’t say much. I asked him what was wrong;
He said, ‘Nothing. I asked him if it was my fault that he
was upset. He said he wasn’t upset, that it had nothing
to do with me, and not to worry about it.’ On the way
home, I told him that I loved him. He smiled slightly,
and kept driving. I can’t explain his behavior. I don’t
know why he didn’t say, ‘I love you, too.’
When we got home, I felt as if I had lost him
completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me
anymore. He just sat there quietly, and watched TV.
He continued to seem distant and absent. Finally, with
silence all around us, I decided to go to bed. About
15 minutes later, he came to bed. But I still felt that
he was distracted, and his thoughts were somewhere
else. He fell asleep; I cried. I don’t know what to do.
I’m almost sure that his thoughts are with someone
else. My life is a disaster.
Husband’s Diary:

From Boca I leave for New York and the snow.”
He stayed for a while, he chatted and ate.
Then he left in a flash before it got late.

Card Party
Saturday, November 15, 2014, Christian Neighbors and Friends held their Annual Card Party and
Chinese Auction.
The ballroom was prepared accordingly, and seating was the choice of each group as they entered the
ballroom. A gift card was given to each as they entered
the room by Pat Russo, Pres.
Food was served at 12 p.m. The tables with edibles
displayed mini heros filled with the most delicious
array of fillings from seafood to Italian hero style.
The best, from Wegmans Caterers ... cookies baked
by Hilda Geller adorned an entire station, delicious
and appetizing.
Chairperson Hilda Geller played a major role in
the success of this outstanding event. the gifts were
plentiful and useful. A $100 money tree was a prize
and a large 50 inch T.V. was also raffled off. (money
tree won by E. Veneziano).
Thank you Pat Russo and Hilda Geller for an
enjoyable day, well planned and conveniently timed!

Recently we lost yet another resident of Covered
Bridge.
The only difference is that this man, John Mattioli, was more than a resident. He was on the Board
of Trustees, Grounds Committee, Executive Board of
HOCB, Election Committee, just to name a few. He
was the HOCB Man of the Year. His opinions were
larger than his stature; and he bunked heads with the
best of them. He did his homework about Covered
Bridge, while many were home watching TV. He dedicated his time, efforts, and money to bring Covered
Bridge to the computer era; not only devising the plan;
but by donating several computers. Thus, was born the
Computer Room, as it is now known.
I’m sure, many people, including myself; have
had differences with him.
One thing is for sure though: his sole purpose was
the welfare of Covered Bridge, no grandstanding, no
threats; and no malice towards anyone.
With him gone, we need a few more John Mattiolis. RIP
My sympathy to his wife Irma, and their beautiful
family.

Thank You
On a recent visit by HOCB President Bob Epstein
to Covered Bridge’s senior former Trustee and elder
statesman, Sid Schneider wished all his friends and
neighbors in Covered Bridge a Happy and Healthy
New Year. Sid, who celebrated his 103rd birthday
in June, is still an advisor to the HOCB Board and a
contributor to the Guardian Magazine.
I would like to send a message of thanks to Friends
& Neighbors who sent “get well” wishes to me after
learning that I had fallen and broken my hip.
Thanks so much!
Sincerely, Sydele Cohen
