IMCA Announces New Annual Award
By Chase Squires
I
MCA will present a new award in
2015, adding to one of the most anticipated components of IMCA’s Annual
Conference and providing an opportunity each year to recognize outstanding
achievement in financial planning and
wealth management.
The new J. Richard Joyner Wealth
Management Impact Award will honor
individuals who have contributed exceptional advancements in the field of private
wealth management, embodied by IMCA’s
Certified Private Wealth Advisor® (CPWA®)
program.
56
as one of its top 100 advisors; and by
D Magazine as one of the best financial
planners in Dallas.
Joyner is former chair of IMCA’s wealth
management committee, which oversees
the CPWA certification offered with The
University of Chicago Booth School of
Business; he has been teaching in the program since its inception. He served as a
member of IMCA’s Board of Directors
from 1999−2008 and was the organization’s president during 2002−2003. He
earned a BS in accounting from Wake
Forest University.
The award recognizes key innovations and
thought leadership in any of the following
CPWA knowledge domains: human
dynamics (behavioral economics and family dynamics); wealth management strategies (tax, portfolio, risk management, and
asset protection); client specialization
(closely held business owners, executives,
and retirement); and legacy planning
(charitable and estate planning).
The Joyner award is a welcome and timely
addition, said Gary Diffendaffer, deputy
executive director of certification at IMCA.
The award is named in honor of J. Richard
Joyner, CPA, CFP®, CIMA®, CPWA®, PFS, a
managing director in Tolleson Wealth
Management’s private wealth management
group, where his specialty is counseling
multigenerational families about complex
wealth management and family dynamics
issues. Previously he was a tax partner and
director of the Southwest area private client
services practice at Ernst & Young. He has
been honored six times by Worth as one of
its top financial advisors; twice by Barron’s
“Richard Joyner, who has invested countless hours in giving back to his peers in the
business, serves as a role model for all that
the award represents.”
“Wealth management has made great
strides as a specialized discipline in recent
years,” Diffendaffer said. The J. Richard
Joyner Award formally recognizes individuals who make significant contributions to
its continuous evolution.
In addition to the newest honor, IMCA
will continue offering its four current
awards:
bution and demonstrated commitment
to the field of investment consulting.
• The Richard J. Davis Ethics, Legal,
Regulatory Insight Award, recognizing
the author(s) of a written work published in the previous year that has
made a significant contribution to
advancing the understanding and
knowledge of investment management
consulting and/or private wealth management in the area of ethics.
• The Edward D. Baker III Journal
Research Award, honoring the
author(s) of an original article that represents the best writing for the previous
year germane to the investment management consulting and/or private
wealth management professions. Each
article published in the Journal of
Investment Consulting will be considered
for the award.
• The Stephen L. Kessler Writing Award,
presented to the author(s) of the best
original articles that are written by
IMCA members and published in
Investments & Wealth Monitor.
All awards will be presented at the IMCA
2015 Annual Conference, April 26–29, in
Las Vegas. For more information on

CPWA® Certification Exam Retesting
Becomes More Convenient
F
or Certified Private Wealth Advisor®
(CPWA®) candidates, retaking the
certification exam is now more
convenient.
Changes recently announced by IMCA will
allow candidates who need to retake the
exam to skip the once-necessary trip to
Denver or Chicago. Starting in October
2014, candidates may take the exam in
their home states at one of more than 200
testing centers operated by Applied
Measurement Professionals Inc. (AMP).
With locations in 180 cities, in all 50 states,
AMP offers candidates the opportunity to
retake the exam for just $225 for IMCA
members, $325 for nonmembers, without
the additional cost and time of travel to
Denver or Chicago.
CPWA certification is an advanced credential
created specifically for wealth managers who
work with high-net-worth individuals and
focus on the life cycle of wealth. Certificants
are uniquely qualified to identify and analyze
challenges faced by high-net-worth individu-
als and understand how to develop strategies
to minimize taxes, monetize and protect
assets, maximize growth, and transfer wealth.
AMP provides professional associations,
government agencies, and private industry
with innovative measurement, assessment,
and management solutions. Secure, standardized computer-based test administration is offered through the AMP Assess
ment Center Network. CPWA candidates
can find testing locations and schedule
appointments at www.goAMP.com. —CS
Outreach Tour Builds Awareness,
Forges Relationships with Media, Government
During the trip IMCA Chair John
Nersesian joined Chief Executive Officer
Sean Walters and Public Relations and
Communications Manager Chase Squires,
meeting with 20 consumer and financial
trade reporters and editors from seven
nationally circulated publications.
In addition, IMCA’s Government Relations
Committee gathered in Washington, DC,
where they met with two members of
Congress as well as staff representatives
from other members. Nersesian, Walters,
and past Chair Betsy Piper/Bach met with
David Grim, deputy director of the SEC’s
Investment Management Division and his
senior policy team; and also with Andrew
Bowden, director of the Office of
Compliance Inspections and Examinations
of the SEC.
Look for updates from these meetings in
future issues of IMCA’s Legislative
Intelligence member-only newsletter.
The goal of the meetings centered on
expanding awareness of IMCA and the
important role played by the CIMA® and
CPWA® certifications.

their clients know the important role education and standards play in the financial
success of American investors, but we also
want those leaders in government, financial oversight, and the media to understand
who we are and what we are about.”
Walters stressed that as an organization
IMCA does not advocate positions or lobby
political leaders. But IMCA does play a vital
role in educating advisors and investors and
is always available to help the trade and
consumer media, elected leaders, and
financial regulators in their various roles
