Omega Invitational 2014—A Smashing Success!
-by Marian Kito
Thanks to all of our parents, coaches, athletes, judges,
volunteers and sponsors, this year’s Omega Invitational
Pacific Rim Championships-tickets

was a smashing success.
This year we had over 270 athletes registered, which was
Results from Orca Invitational & Winterfest, 3
higher than past years’ meets, which resulted in having to
host the event over 3 days, instead of our usual 2 days.

their assigned areas were taken care of and as a result, we had no
major issues! Big thanks to all the volunteers that helped with
setting up, take down, scoring/timing/flashing/running, admissions, concession, silent auction, awards, and to all those that contributed to judges food and the silent auction. Our meet would
never had happened if it wasn’t for all of you!
Thank you all for contributing to one of our best Omega Invitational’s to date! Job well done!
Omega’s gymnasts also had a great showing at the meet. See Page

Omega Gymnastics’ Shallon Olsen and Ilka Juk put on gold medal
performances on home territory.
The artistic gymnasts set the tone for the team at the Omega Gymnastics Invitational on the weekend, each winning their respective
divisions. Olsen, 13, topped the national open category, edging out
clubmate Seina Cho for first all-around. The two-time junior Canadian open
champion ran the table in all four events, taking gold in vault, bars, beam and
floor for 60.35 score. Cho would secure second all-around on the strength of
silvers on both beam and floor.
In the national novice division, Juk topped the vault and beam and tied for first
on floor en route to first all-around. Placing second place all-around was Club
Aviva’s Lauren Wang, with gold on bars and silver on beam and floor. Coming
in third was Omega’s Grace Noble, who tied for first on floor and posted the
third-best score on vault and bars.
In provincial competition, Becca Mitchell claimed first overall in 1 Argo, with
gold on bars and silver on beam and floor. In second spot was teammate Zoe
Dennison, with gold on beam and floor and silver on vault and bars.
In 2 Argo (2005-06), Omega’s Sasha Rojen registered gold in both vault and beam

Around the Gym….
NEWS FROM THE BOARD
As parents, we all think our
kids are great, but I want to
tell you about a great little
athlete we have in our gym.
This is Kate Askew. She is
one of our Pre-Competitive
gymnasts, in Gymstart 2,
coached by Henry.
Kate is one tough little
cookie!
Recently, during a training
session, she had an accident on the beam and
broke her elbow. She was
taken to hospital and had
surgery on her elbow the
following day. Less than a
week later, I saw her back
at the gym, with a bright pink cast! I was shocked to see her
back in the gym so soon. When I asked her mom, Misti, she
told me that Kate was bored and wanted to go back to the
gym. Henry agreed to let her be the “assistant coach” and
gave her a stop watch. I thought, this little 5 year old is not
only tough, but brave!
Fast forward two weeks……
It is the weekend of the Omega Invitational. Of course, the
meet is in full swing, and Connie is in need of helpers for the
awards presentation for the athletes. Kate is one of our
many eager of volunteers for the job. Connie isn’t sure how
helpful she is going to be, especially with her broken elbow
in a cast, but Kate’s enthusiasm convinces Connie to let her
help.
At the first awards ceremony on Saturday morning, Kate is
standing, watching the other girls carry the trays of medals
for presentation. With her broken elbow under her hoodie,
it would be difficult for her to hold a tray, but after a few
minutes, Connie decides to let Kate try to hold a tray, but is
worried that this might hurt Kate’s arm...But Kate is fearless
and willing, and carries that tray as well as she could with
her one good arm and one injured arm. Kate helps with
every awards session on Saturday! She was helping at the
gym from 8AM til 10PM! (and not one tray was dropped, by
the way!)
Kate, you deserve a medal! You are a role model for kids of
all ages! Coincidentally, Kate is our Gymnast of the Month
this month! See her profile on Page 5.
Fundraising Notes:
Q2 Invoices will be distributed on March 5th.
Payments will be due by March 15th.
A Kid’s Corner at Omega Gymnastics
Kat Senft would like to create a “Kids Corner” at the gym and is

YOU KNOW YOU’RE A GYMNAST WHEN…
A flipflop is not a sandal
A wedge is not a piece of cheese
Sticking it does not require glue
Giants are not jolly and green
Pull over does not mean you’re getting a ticket
Scales are not for weighing yourself
A vault is not where you keep your money
Splits do require a banana
Bars are not made of candy
Chalk is not something you write with
…and your world is always turned upside down!
