ELECTED TO LEGISLATURE AT AGE 29!
DEMOCRATS AT COON DOG DAYS
Tate MacQueen, Candidate for Congress in the Tenth Congressional District, the Polk
County Democratic Party, and many more Democratic candidates starred in Saluda’s “Coon Dog
Days Parade” on July 5th.
Tate’s campaign bus was cheered
as it drove along the parade route.
Signs for County Commissioner Candidate
Bill Ingham and other Democrats were
very prominent all along the parade route
Tate’s strong support team
proudly posed with him in front of
his bus.
CATAWBA COUNTY DEMOCRATIC WOMEN
What a happy picture! Ruth Stone has enjoyed working for the Democratic Party in
Catawba County for many years. In this picture she is preparing flyers to be mailed announcing a
big Democratic Women’s Event: The July 26th Panel Discussion on “GOP War On Women – Is It
Real?”
This event will be held at 3PM on Saturday, July 26th at the Patrick Beaver Memorial Library
at 375 Third Street NE in Hickory. Both men and women are invited to this free event.
In this picture Carole Hovland and Holly Stone are busy getting envelopes ready for
mailing.
President Lynn Dorfman is providing enthusiastic leadership for the Catawba DW!
MOORE COUNTY DEMOCRATS ON THE MARCH!
Lots of Moore County Democrats marched in the Fourth of July Parade in Pinehurst.
County Party Chair Wilma Laney is the lady on the right holding the “Moore County Democrats”
banner and wearing the multi-colored blouse and hat.
Former County Chair Jim Heim drove and State Senate Candidate Tommy Davis rode in the
body of this brightly decorated truck. Tommy’s web site is: www.TommyDavisForNCSenate.org.
His email is: [email protected]. His telephone is: 910-944-1855.
Uncle Sam and the Statue of Liberty drove this Democratic donkey while a
colorfully dressed Democrat walked behind. (We always knew Uncle Sam was a
Democrat, didn’t we?)
Clay Aiken shook every hand he could reach as he marched through
Pinehurst. Have you heard Clay speak yet? He is highly informed and he is
a real Democrat on the issues!
ANGIE ELKINS
One of the Democrats that everybody enjoys seeing at all our statewide Democratic
meetings is Angie Elkins of Durham!
This lady has been a Democratic leader for a longtime. She was President of the
National Federation of Democratic Women from 1983 to 1985 – and she is still going strong for the
Democratic Party.
Prior to being President of the national Democratic Women, she served two years as Vice
President and two years as the NFDW’s Southern Regional Director.
Following her Presidential term, Angie was a very active Member of the Democratic
National Committee for 20 years.
She continues to serve on the State Executive Committee of our NC Democratic Party and
on the Executive Committee of the Durham County Democratic Party.
Angie’s life revolves around her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She has a
great-grandaughter who Angie feels “has all the qualities she needs to become President.”
Angie also sends out some of the most humorous emails in the world! To receive her
humorous emails or to say “Hello,” write her at [email protected].
TWO GREAT CANDIDATES!
Tenth Congressional District Candidate Tate MacQueen and Lisa
Bralley, Candidate for State Representative in District 112, posed
for this happy Fourth of July picture in Rutherfordton.
African American Caucus Meets At State Headquarters
The African American Caucus of the NC Democratic Party hosted a statewide meeting at
the Goodwin House on July 12th. Members from around the state were present to discuss the work
of the AAC and the election of Democrats up and down the ballot this fall.
Joining State Party Chair Randy Voller in the picture above are Wayne County AAC
Secretary Valerie Conyers and Wayne County AAC President Viola Ryals-Figueroa.
State President Willie Fleming opened the meeting and welcomed members and guests.
Gubernatorial Candidate Ken Spaulding was present with his wife and he gave a rousing
speech to the group. In this picture Ken Spaulding is with Linda Wilkins-Daniels from Wayne
County and Barbara McCoy of Harnett County.
Phyllis Coley, the publisher of SPECTACULAR MAGAZINE, spoke about outreach into the
communities across the state and the importance of working with local minority owned
businesses.
State Party Chair Randy Voller talked with the group about AAC’s mission, how far the
organization has come and its importance in working with the Party and engaging communities
across the state to create sustainable prosperity and elect Democrats.
STANLY COUNTY CHAIR ASSUMES A NEW OFFICE
Stanly County Democratic Party Chair Judy Dry Hammill was appointed to the Village
Council of the Village of Misenheimer on June 24th. She has served on the Village’s Planning Board
and Board of Adjustments for several years. The 2010 US Census reported that the village has
728 residents.
She and her friend Jane Knight are standing in front of Judy’s home in the happy picture
above. Judy’s father built this home in the 1940s. He was an active Democrat and was Sheriff of
Stanly County.
Judy grew up in Misenheimer. As an adult she lived in Charleston, SC, for many years. She
returned to her family’s home in Misenheimer seven years ago after her husband died.
She says she “would like to see the village continue to be a quaint community, but still
keep up-to-date with what’s happening around us.”
Judy is excited about having a strong and active Democratic campaign in Stanly County
this Fall!
DICK BARNES: “BOOZE IT & LOSE IT”
This summer radio stations all over the nation are giving lots of play time to the wise and
humorous song recorded by North Carolina Democrat Dick Barnes: “Booze It & Lose It.” This song
reminds motorist that safe driving is more important than taking a drink.
Dick has served as both a State Senator and a State Representative. You can play this
popular song by clicking on:

DAKOTA IN CHINA
UNC-W College Democrat Dakota Cary poses in front of the
Shanghi skyline soon after his arrival for a summer study
session at Fudan University. Like most visitors, he was
surprised by the heavy air pollution which has caused most of
his classmates to have headaches and runny noses.
Dakota says “Despite China’s air quality, the experience
here is great!
“My professors are being pretty open about the internal
politics of China and how it relates to their diplomacy with
America. Of course, I don’t think they are as open with their
domestic Chinese students as they are with their international
foreign students.
“Fudan University has given me the opportunity to host
the closing ceremony for the international program. I’ll get
to give a speech and transition the guests.
He continues: “Learning Mandarin here has helped me better
understand my own language because I am recognizing
similarities in sentence syntax, and their use of words with
multiple meanings.”
In this picture Dakota has climbed to one of the highest points
on the Great Wall of China.
How about this? On the Fourth of July, Dakota and
about ten other American students stood up in a Chinese
restaurant and loudly sang “The Star Spangled Banner!”
We can wonder if the Chinese guests knew that the American
National Anthem was being sung.
JASON CARTER COMES TO NORTH CAROLINA
Jay and Sajal Chaudhuri held a successful fundraising event at their Raleigh home on July
th
9 for State Senator Jason Carter who is running a dynamic campaign for Governor of Georgia. In
the picture above Morrisville Town Councilman T. J. Cawley and Senator Dan Blue are with Jason
Carter.
Jay Chaudhuri was a classmate of Jason when they were in law school in Atlanta.
The hosts provided bbq prepared just outside in a big cooker and lots of other delicious food.
Governor Jim Hunt gave a heartfelt introduction to Jason. One of Governor Hunts’ terms of
office coincided with President Carter’s term in the White House.
Jason Carter spoke eloquently about the alarming parallels between Georgia, which has
been in a state of decline since electing a GOP Governor just a few years ago and North Carolina
which has recently suffered the same fate and may be following the same decline unless steps
are taken to reverse it.

Democrats to make their voices heard at an October public hearing he
will be conducting on huge inceases in Homeowners Insurance rates.

Party, Goodwin said that insurance companies have asked for massive
increases and that homeowners should come to the October hearing

YOUTH FEATURE – CECIL BROCKMAN
ELECTED TO NC LEGISLATURE AT AGE 29!
Twenty-nine year old Cecil Brockman of High Point garnered 54% of the vote in a three-way
Democratic Primary contest for State House District 60 on May 6 th. Since no Republican is running
in November, his election is assured. His District covers parts of High Point, Greensboro, and
suburban Guilford County.
After his father died of pneumonia when he was 4, Cecil and his sister, Andrea Brockman,
were raised by their mother, Cecilia Evans. He told The High Point Enterprise: “I wouldn’t be the
person I am today without my mom.”
His mother was his main campaign advocate. She worked every day making phone calls
and rallying supporters. He was also actively supported by his aunt Tammy Leach and his cousins
Mshari Evans, Whitney Leach, and Aaron Leach. His uncle Ben Brockman and his grandfather
Howard Brockman cheerfully working in his campaign also.
Cecil graduated from Ragsdale High School in Jamestown with dentistry as his career goal.
However, when he started talking political science courses at UNC-Charlotte, he got “hooked” on
political activities.
After graduating from UNC-Charlotte he worked in several political campaigns, including
the campaigns of State Representative Marcus Brandon. He also served as Legislative Aide to
Rep. Brandon.
When Brandon ran for Congress in 2014, Cecil saw an opportunity to run for the Legislature
that might not come again. He received strong encouragement from Brandon, High Point Mayor
Bernita Sims, and his pastor, Rev. Tacuma Johnson of Greater First United Baptist Church.
Cecil is close to his entire family including his nephew and his nephew’s half-brother
who are with him in this picture. You can write to him at: [email protected].

Melvin Williams
