Alex Samoylovich is the Co-founder and Managing
Partner of Cedar Street Companies. Utilizing a “fully
integrated real estate developer” (IRED) approach,
Mr. Samoylovich and his partners have seamlessly
interwoven acquisition, construction, finance,
management, and marketing under one company.
Under Mr. Samoylovich’s leadership, the company
has carved out a niche strategy for the adaptive reuse
of underperforming assets through bankruptcies,
foreclosures, note purchases, and other distressed
situations in the Chicago area; covering a span of
product types from multifamily, office, mixed-use,
and hospitality. Mr. Samoylovich has cemented a
well-earned reputation as a tenacious deal maker
capable of closing the most complex and demanding
real estate transactions and returning superior risk
adjusted returns to his investors.
Prior to entering real estate, Mr. Samoylovich
was an accomplished equity and options trader.
During this time, Mr. Samoylovich developed a keen
understanding of market psychology and timing
which he forayed into a successful “short” strategy
in residential real estate just prior to the recession.
In the past 5 years, Cedar Street has been
considered one of the most active acquirers of
distressed assets in the greater Chicago area. Over
the past ten years, Mr. Samoylovich has sourced,
invested in and managed in excess of hundreds
of transactions and has been instrumental in the
acquisition and disposition of real estate with a value
in excess of $500mm.
Mr. Samoylovich holds a BA in Business from
DePaul University and is currently a member of the
Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO).
Perseverance and hard work are two words Gennady
Gertsman is very familiar with. Born in the former Soviet
Union, now Kharkov, Ukraine, Gennady was ten years old
when he and his parents fled their home to escape religious
persecution. After nine months of waiting as religious refugees in Rome, Italy, they were granted permission to make
their way to the United States.
Having no family or friends in the States, their journey was
full of fear and anxious anticipation. The immigration was
difficult, especially as his family was not able to bring much
from their old life. Upon arrival, one thing Gennady did find
solace in was the game of chess. Starting at the age of four he
had learned to play with his father, and by six had attended
one of the most prestigious chess academies in the Soviet
Union. As chess is the same in every country, he found an
old connection with his new home, and proceeded to win two
state titles. Gennady believes his success in the trading world
can be strongly attributed to his many years of chess playing.
By the age of seventeen, Gennady began filling his time
with small start-up businesses and developing his entrepreneurial skills. However, it was during freshman year of
college he found his calling; trading in the financial markets.
Through hard work and dedication, he was able to start his
own trading firm at 22.
Today his firm, Kapital Trading, has grown into a proprietary global firm that trades multiple asset classes on many
exchanges around the world. The firm combines statistical
analysis techniques with market knowledge, creating models
that help predict future price movements in financial markets.
These models are incorporated into a homegrown trading
platform, allowing trades to be automatically executed in
response to predictions on electronic financial exchanges.
Gennady continues to stay actively involved with his
firm by developing new market strategies and aiding in
their execution. He holds a bachelors’ degree in Finance
and Entrepreneurial studies from the University of Illinois
Chicago. While much of his time is spent trading, his true
passion is traveling, evident by the multiple trips he’s taken
around the world. When he is not traveling, he enjoys staying
active, biking, running and playing basketball.
Leo Friedman began his entrepreneurial ventures
in high school, buying inventory for his first
business using his mother’s credit card. A successful
entrepreneur, Leo is the personification of rightbrain, left-brain balance. His company, iPromo.
com, has multimillion dollar revenues and a global
presence as a leader in the promotional products
industry. It serves most of the Fortune 500 companies
and specializes in maximizing the ROI of its clients’
marketing budgets. Leo is also the co-founder of the
retail marketing agency Digital BrandWorks, which
was recently named #132 on the 2013 Inc. 500 list
