Ingalls Shipbuilding A Division of Huntington Ingalls Industries February 6, 2014 Vol. 44, Number 5 On Deck America (LHA 6) returns from successful acceptance trials The flight deck was one of many systems on America (LHA 6) tested during acceptance trials Jan. 28-31. After commissioning, the large flight deck will allow Marine Corps aircraft to support a variety of missions. Northern winds last week faced another force on the seas – the amphibious assault ship America (LHA 6). Despite freezing weather across the Gulf Coast, sailors and shipbuilders sailed the Gulf of Mexico aboard America Jan. 28-31 as she proved her mettle to the U.S. Navy’s board of inspection and survey (INSURV) during acceptance sea trials. “America proved she is a quality ship,” George Jones, LHA 6 ship program manager, said. “The LHA 6 team’s tireless and diligent effort paid off as our scores from INSURV indicated. We will continue this effort over the next few weeks to have LHA 6 ready for the sailors and Marines who will man her when she enters the U.S. Navy fleet.” After successfully demonstrating more than 220 tests to INSURV, America returned to Ingalls Shipbuilding Friday, Jan. 31. “The Ingalls/Navy team did an outstanding job in presenting the ship to the Board of Inspection and Survey,” said Richard Schenk, vice president, Test and Trials. “It is a tribute to all involved in proving the capabilities of such a large and complex ship.” During acceptance trials, shipbuilders and personnel from Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Gulf Coast, demonstrated all required sea trial evolutions, including the operation of the hybrid gas turbine/electric-drive propulsion system. Other tests included anchor handling, steering demonstration, flight deck operations, and combat systems’ evaluations. “This is the first large deck ever with zero starred cards, which is unheard of on a platform of this size,” said Randy Padgett, LHA 6 construction manager. “This was the goal from the beginning, when this team came together more than two years ago for the first of many meetings. At times it’s overlooked, but this accomplishment is not just by the folks down here on the water, but by cable pullers, pipe fitters, and other craft workers on the units and in the tanks.” The Ingalls Employee Information Line is 1-877-871-2058 Black History Month Display to feature African-American firsts Feb. 26 in the ARAMARK cafeteria Honoring February as Black History Month, the African-American Shipbuilders Association (AASA) will present “African-American Firsts,” a Black History display highlighting trailblazers in politics, entertainment, sports, military, science and other areas Wednesday, Feb. 26, in the ARAMARK cafeteria from 11 a.m. - noon. Somerset departs Avondale to be commissioned in Philadelphia Avondale Shipbuilders, from left, Randal Dempster, rigger; Douglas Schexnayder, scaffold carpenter; and David Benoit, carpenter, release the lines mooring Somerset (LPD 25) to the docks at Avondale Feb. 3. Somerset (LPD 25), the third amphibious transport dock ship named to honor the heroes of 9/11, left Avondale Monday, Feb. 3. “Watching Somerset leave knowing all the hard work that our employees put into her was a blessing; and I cannot tell you how much I want to thank all who had the privilege to be a part of her success,” said Wayne Davis, LPD 25 ship program manager. Patriotic citizens and shipbuilders lined the levees to watch Somerset sail with her crew down the Mississippi River and through New Orleans toward her commissioning site in Philadelphia. Somerset has the distinction of being the final U.S. Navy ship delivered by shipbuilders at Avondale as the shipyard looks for new business. “It was a very sad moment – but also a proud moment – for all our workers watching Somerset leave our shipyard,” said Tommy “Cabbage” Barrett, LPD 25 ship construction manager. Mike Duthu, director, LPD 17 Program, said that Somerset received better scores from the Navy Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) than any ship in the class during acceptance trials. She also had zero starred cards and the lowest number of monetary retentions at delivery. “The customer on multiple levels has complemented the team on how they have executed the contract,” Duthu said. “All of those accomplishments do not happen by themselves. They occurred because of the constant diligence of the LPD 25 team.” Davis added that the ship was praised by the Navy at acceptance trials and delivery as the best of her class. “Even with the pressure of the changes occurring at Avondale, they still challenged themselves to making this ship better than any other we had built,” said Davis. Somerset is named for Somerset County in Pennsylvania, the site where United Airlines Flight 93 crashed on Sept. 11, 2001. Passenger Todd Beamer urged several fellow passengers into the cockpit to overtake terrorist hijackers with the rally cry, “Let’s roll!” Those words are painted on the ship’s hangar door. Somerset’s official motto is “Courage through Adversity” reflecting the heroic sacrifice of the 40 passengers that may have prevented an even greater tragedy. Davis, a 36 year shipbuilder, and Barrett, a 38 year shipbuilder, said that the men and women building ships at Avondale lived that motto. “She is a beautiful ship and the best of her class,” Barrett said. “What an honor it has been working with the fine bunch of men and women getting her done. They will always remember that courage through adversity truly pays off.” Reward ethical employees On-the-Spot The On-the-Spot Ethics Recognition Program offers foremen and fellow employees a chance to recognize their fellow shipbuilders for showing a high degree of ethical behavior in the workplace. To submit your fellow shipbuilder for an award, fill out the form C-941, available on Command Media, and mail it to the Business Conduct Office at mail stop 1030-09.
