Ingalls Shipbuilding A Division of Huntington Ingalls Industries August 14, 2014 Vol. 44, Number 31 Mast lifts take John P. Murtha (LPD 26) to 100 percent erected Both masts for John P. Murtha (LPD 26) were added last week. The aft mast (shown here) was erected Aug. 4 and the forward mast was set Aug. 7. John P. Murtha (LPD 26) now bears the iconic profile for which LPD 17-class Landing Platform Dock ships are known. Both composite masts were added to Murtha last week and the ship is now 100 percent erected. The aft mast was lifted Monday, Aug. 4, and the forward mast was set Thursday, Aug. 7. “It’s great to see the Murtha take shape,” said Hank Corcoran, LPD 26 ship construction manager. “Seeing those masts in place is a real motivator for the men and women creating this ship.” Mike Pruitt, LPD 26 production program manager, said the overall progress of the ship is now nearly 75 percent complete. “All craft and their supervision made great strides,” Pruitt said. “The efforts of Test and Trials event coordinator Marty Davis and general superintendent “Big Randy” Edwards are much appreciated as is the experience that Hull supervisor Kenneth Ward brought to the table.” Davis has been working masts since 2003 starting with USS New York. “We’ve spent the past five weeks outfitting this structure, which had to move early from the Gulfport Composite Center of Excellence,” said Davis. “Work on this structure involved all craft. Hull and Accuracy Control are working to ensure it is properly welded out.” Brent Conn, LPD 26 boat foreman, said that the work the team completed while the structures were on the ground in Pascagoula will ensure the mast will be ready for light-off within a couple months. “We’ve come a long way in the past weeks ,” Conn said. “And this really shows what shipbuilders can accomplish when they pull together.” Three machinists on the team outfitting the masts are former Gulfport employees, Mack Adkinson, Preston Millender and Santoria Bolden. Shipbuilders are now welding, painting and pulling cable to ready the ship for launch this fall. “Our shipbuilders have done outstanding work,” said Kari Wilkinson, LPD 26 ship program manager “And the momentum they have created will continue through launch, trials and delivery.” Call Employee Information Line for NSC 4 Hamilton sea trial updates The fourth National Security Cutter Hamilton (WMSL 753) is now on her Acceptance Trial and is expected back today. During sea trials, families of shipbuilders on Hamilton can receive updates by calling the Employee Information line, 1-877-871-2058, press 2 for Ingalls and 1 for Pascagoula. The message is available in Spanish. In an emergency, call the Communications Center at (228) 935-3262 to relay information to the ship. The Ingalls Employee Information Line is 1-877-871-2058 AASA seminars present the path to become foremen David Whittington, left, Administration manager, Hull, and Albert Williams, Administration manager, Electrical, inform craftsmen about their career path, ways to become foremen and what the company looks for in future leaders during the AASA Sunrise Foreman Seminar July 31. The early bird catches the worm; and the craftsmen who came to the Sunrise Foreman Seminar at 5 a.m. July 31 caught valuable information on how to attain leadership positions. The African-American Shipbuilders Association (AASA) sponsored the 30-minute event that allowed craftsmen to hear from Human Resources representatives and Operations leadership. “We have read in Centerline and The Anchor about how the company is seeking leaders, especially those who have craft experience,” said AASA chairperson Sondia Christian. “So our event chair Charlotte Merritt aligned with Operations Administration, Human Resources and Craft Management to take that information to the shipbuilders.” Tim Farrell, Vice President, Operations, addressed shipbuilders at the event with a brief synopsis of his career. “At some point I had to say that I don’t want to be just an engineer, but to become someone who can control my destiny and take my workplace in the right direction,” said Farrell. “I’m looking for the next generation of leaders that are going to fix things here in the shipyard.” Albert Williams, Administration manager for Electrical department, and David Whittington, Administration manager for Hull department, described their career paths to the assembled craftsmen. “I had to learn what it was to become a manager before I could throw my hat in the ring,” said Williams, “If you’re looking into it for the money, that’s the wrong motivator. You need to have a sense of wanting to lead and represent the company.” Whittington added, “Always apply yourself. Moving around in the shipyard can help increase the knowledge you need. And put in your application or update your profile in the online system. Doing so helps HR know more about you.” Carlos Moulds, Human Resources business partner, and Jamie Dwyer, manager, HR business partners, also explained that once craftsmen become foremen, they have HR business partners who can assist them. Mark your calendars for upcoming AASA events: •Aug. 28 – Day in a Life of a Foreman – Covey Training Room – 3-3:30 p.m. •Sept. 25 – Afternoon Foreman Seminar – Covey Training Room – 1-1:30 p.m. •Oct. 30 – Day in a Life of a Foreman – Covey Training Room – 3-3:30 p.m. To find out about open foreman positions at Ingalls, visit www.buildyourcareer.com AASA to present a day in the life of a foreman Aug. 28 African American Shipbuilding Association (AASA) will host a panel discussion on the life journey and experience as a foreman Thursday, Aug. 28, from 3-3:30 p.m. in the Covey Training Room (next to fire station).
