COURSE SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
~ This assignment asks you to research THREE Current Issues ~
THE INFORMED CITIZEN: UNDERSTANDING THE ISSUES
1. Choose THREE current issues that affect Canadians. These issues may include:
Healthcare
The environment
Violent crime in Canada
Poverty
Foreign policy
Canada’s sovereignty
Taxation
Police conduct
Food and product safety
education
Military spending
Privacy issues
Spend some time familiarizing yourself with these possible topics before settling in on two for you focus.
2. For each current issue locate a minimum of three sources (notice the word ‘minimum’). These
sources can be print, digital, video, or even song lyric! Feel free to think outside of the box! These
sources must focus on the issue that you are reviewing. It is strongly recommended that you consult
newspapers, news magazines (i.e. Macleans), internet articles (from credible publications**) and the
CBC News in Review videos (other news media publications are acceptable). You have access to all of
these resources in the WCI library – so take advantage of them! Level Four products will have at least
FOUR sources, including one video source.
There are many options with respect to the sources you can select, but be advised that your sources
will be evaluated. This should encourage you to use reliable, well researched, and thoroughly
supported sources (basically, credible sources). Speak with Mr. Waters if you have concerns about the
sources you are consulting.
PROCESS
A). Review the list of topics, complete some background research, and select three issues that appeal to
you. Make sure that you confirm your selections with Mr. Waters before proceeding to the next step.
For each issue:
RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH! We will discuss several research strategies in class and in the library.
Proper and effective research is a vital component of this activity.
B). Search for credible sources. Review the sources carefully.
C). For each source include the following:
I.
II.
Point form notes discussing the relevant information that pertains to the issue you are studying
A three-to-five sentence summary of each source which clearly identifies: a) the issue, b) why
this issue is important to Canadians, c) the different positions people hold on this issue as
presented in the source.

D). After reviewing the sources, familiarizing yourself with the facts, and developing a position on the
topic, you should be ready to share your thoughts. In a well developed paragraph express your newly
educated opinion about the issue. Clearly describe the issue, discuss the varying (competing)
perspectives, and be sure to support your opinion. You should include examples from your research to
support your views. Try to draw information from all of your sources. Level Four scrapbooks will be
organized to include sub-headings and footnotes to cite the source of specific pieces of information.
E). Bibliography: Include all sources in your scrapbook
I.
II.
III.
For print sources: include pertinent section such as source and date
For video sources: indicate the video series (i.e. CBC News in Review), the date and segment title
For song lyrics: include the lyrics, the song title, the album title and the artist
Please note you are writing ONE OPINION ARTICLE PER ISSUE, not one opinion article
per source
Organize your scrapbook neatly and effectively. Your creative vision is your business,
and creativity is strongly encouraged. There are very few rules. Level four products
will clearly label all parts of the scrapbook using a title, headings, sub-headings, and
word processed text.
See Mr Waters if you have ANY questions or problems with this activity. Do not think
that anything is trivial. Little problems that are solved quickly never become big
problems.
