Hood Community College (MHCC) is a member of the Oregon Consortium for Nursing Education (OCNE) and offers a competency‐based curriculum jointly developed by nursing faculties from the nine community colleges and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) consortium partners. Acceptance to the program allows for co‐admission to MHCC and OHSU nursing programs. The core competencies address the need for nurses to be skilled in clinical judgment and critical thinking; evidence‐based practice; relationship‐centered care; interdisciplinary collaboration; assisting individuals and families in self‐care practices for promotion of health and management of chronic and acute illness; end‐of‐life care; and teaching, delegation, leadership and supervision of caregivers. The MHCC Nursing program will accept up to 4 LPN’s into the Advanced Placement cohort for the 2015‐2016 school year. Accepted students could begin the program as early as Fall 2015, but as late as Spring 2016. Applicant eligibility and selection process is described in this document. DEMANDS OF THE PROGRAM It is important to understand the mental and physical demands of the nursing program and the career of the nurse. Applicants to the Nursing program must be physically and mentally able to cope with the rigors of the curriculum and the demanding nature of the health professions with or without reasonable accommodations. Nursing students must be able to grasp scientific concepts, set up and answer basic math and algebra problems, and communicate well verbally and in writing. Admission to MHCC does not guarantee admission to the LPN to RN program. Prospective applicants who meet all the admissions requirements, but have not graduated from a regionally accredited LPN program must first make an appointment with the Dean of Nursing, Janie Griffin, to make sure their prior academic experience meets the needs of the program. Please call (503) 491‐6700 to make an appointment. 1. 2. 3. Complete the ATI LPN Step Test (of LPN knowledge). Applicants are encouraged to study an NCLEX‐LPN review text before the test. The student is responsible for the cost of the test to the ATI company at the time the test is taken. The test is approximately $18 and payable with a debit or credit card. Applicants must have a minimum of 66.7% or better on the ATI Step test to be considered for admission to the RN program. Tests are offered at 6 p.m. at the Bruning Center for Allied Health (1484 NW Civic Drive, Gresham, Oregon) on the following days: 10/20, 10/27, 11/3. Students are not guaranteed a spot to test if they arrive late. Government issued photo ID is required to take the test. Applicants are to print off and turn in their LPN license from the Oregon State Board of Nursing. A current unencumbered Oregon LPN license and 500+ hours of LPN work experience must be submitted by November 10, 2014. Completion of all nursing program prerequisites listed below with a minimum grade of “C” or better with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, and all first year nursing program general education courses before the November 10, 2014 application deadline. The required mathematics; Anatomy and Physiology I, II, III; Nutrition; and Microbiology must be completed within the last seven years (not taken prior to Winter term 2008). Biology Course with Genetics: Introduction to Genetics (a course or a module within a course). Any human biology course that includes a human genetics component in the course and indicates this inclusion in the college catalog course description. This requirement may not be met through the Microbiology or Anatomy and Physiology courses. Social Sciences: Students who complete these requirements at other schools may make their selection based on that institution’s published general education list. Therefore, a C‐ would be recognized as a “C” and therefore be an accepted grade for a prerequisite course. Credits taken as pass/no pass (if accepted by the college as meeting requirements) may be considered only if the “pass” is equivalent to a “C” or better. Points = applicant’s score in decimal form times 20. /20 Residency Consideration In district= 2 points; Out of district (with no Advanced Placement for LPN’s program) = 2 points; Out of district = 0 point; Out of state = 0 point. /2 Completion of Second Year Electives A maximum of 3 points will be awarded: 15 credits = 3 points 10‐14 credits = 2 points 5‐9 credits = 1 point /3 LPN Work experience All work experience hours must be within the last 5 years: 2,701+ hours of work experience = 6 points 2,041 to 2,700 hours of work experience = 4 points 1,548 to 2,040 hours of work experience = 2 point /6 Completed LPN coursework at MHCC Earned their LPN certificate at MHCC = 3 points /3 Foreign Language Applicants with either 2 years of the same foreign language in high school or two terms of college will earn 2 points. Applicants will need to submit their official high school transcripts to earn points. /2 Discretionary Points Tie Breakers: In the event that two or more applicant scores cluster at the same cut‐off point, MHCC will use tiebreakers in the following order: 1. Graduate of the MHCC LPN program 2. ATI Step exam score 3. Date and time of completed application INTERVIEW AND PROCTORED ESSAY All application packets that are considered complete (submitted all required materials) by the application deadline will be evaluated and awarded points to determine the top 6 candidates to be interviewed. The top 6 applicants will participate in an interview and proctored essay according to a 30‐point scale. Applicants who interview will also be awarded up to 10 points on the skill assessment checklist (see application for specific skills). Points awarded prior to the interview are not carried forward once the applicant is invited to the interview and proctored essay. The points awarded in the interview, proctored essay, and skill assessment are the final determining factor for selecting the final 4 applicants.
