Issue No.25 July 2014 HERE WE GROW AGAIN New Tribe Chatswood Chase Luc Espace opens in Hayman Island FEEL THE MAGIC Helping kids deal with grief WINTER COLOUR TRENDS Colour your way to hair heaven 1 AD New Luc Espace Hayman Island An unforgettable salon experience in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef Now open to discover and explore lucespace.com 2 hayman.oneandonlyresorts.com luke’s space As a hairdresser, I’m particularly excited at the movement towards the 70s’ rock chic revival. It’s a great time creatively when you can relate to a decade. Fringes are long and heavy, and mid-length black raven hair reminds me of rock style icons Joan Jett and Chrissie Hynde. There are some lovely underlying seasonal directions making it a great time to refresh your style. Our Instagram (lucespace_tribe) is full of inspiration, so please follow us and, if you dare, try out some of the new trends. We have some exciting news to share in this edition. I have partnered with One&Only Hayman Island, which has just unveiled an AU$80 million resort redevelopment. Luc Espace salon is located in a fabulous position, directly opposite the spa. This new, reimagined resort really is in one of the most beautiful locales in the world. We are very proud to be part of it. Partnering with One&Only presents a great opportunity for our team members to rotate between time on the island and time in Sydney, and equally for Hayman to have a motivated, well-trained team servicing the guests. Tribe Lifestyle Chatswood Chase also opened in July and is looking amazing. The new salon is larger than the old one and is located in a prominent position on Level 1. This site has enabled us to present a unique exhibition space, which will run along the back wall. Showcasing new and upcoming artists, exhibitions will be running monthly. If you would like to participate or know someone who would, please send your enquiry to [email protected]. We are kicking off our first exhibition with one of Sydney’s iconic photographers Tom Evangelidis. Tom is the man behind Black Eye Gallery, in Surry Hills, and he is exhibiting a selection of St Petersburg stills from his publication Façade. Please ensure we have your email address as we have lots of wonderful events and artists in the line up. Many of the women in my family are hairdressers and, growing up, I was definitely inspired by my Nan, a hairdresser who always had the most glamorous set. I think it’s safe to say that I followed her footsteps without even realising I was doing it. I started as an apprentice hairdresser when I was 16 and fell in love with the job. I really enjoy the social aspect of hairdressing – meeting new people, sharing ideas and inspiration, and getting to know their stories, all while making my clients feel good about themselves. That’s one of the many reasons why I love my job. Whilst I am only new to Tribe, having started just a few months ago, I have experienced quite a lot throughout my hairdressing career. I’ve had the opportunity to travel and style hair for an incredible variety of people. One of my biggest career highlights so far was traveling to London to style hair for a variety of charity fashion shows. When you can combine traveling the world and doing what you love it’s really a dream come true. My career highlights haven’t just been on the runway, though. One of my greatest memories is styling a client’s hair for her wedding. I created a sexy, modern Marilyn Monroe look that combined glossy reds and 40s’ waves – two of my favourite looks. I was even lucky enough to attend her wedding later that day so I could watch the reactions of the groom and guests when they saw how gorgeous she was! When looking for inspiration for my clients, I usually take it from two totally different places – London and Nature. I love edgy, trendy, city hair and classic styles. However, I also think natural, sexy waves are effortlessly chic and wearable anywhere. If I could cut anyone’s hair, living or dead, I’d have to choose Osho, the Indian mystic, guru and spiritual teacher. I would give him a signature ritual with an Indian head massage whilst trimming his beard. I’d be really curious to find out what energy he was feeling at that time – I’m guessing it would be a chakra 4 or 7. As a stylist, I’ve learnt a lot, but a tip I share with every hairdresser is to try Viparita Karani (legsup-the-wall yoga pose) to relieve the pressure in your legs after a long day on your feet at the salon. 5 THE COLOURS WE’RE DYEING TO TRY THIS WINTER The temperature has well and truly dropped and we’re layering up like there’s no tomorrow, but we have selected the hottest hair colour trends to help you make a new season style change by Janelle Dongalen, technical director at Luc Espace Feel that chill in the air? It’s time to kiss your summery highlights goodbye and set your sights on a new hair colour to keep you looking fresh throughout the season. Big changes in the weather inspire us on big hair changes too, and this season is all about embracing warming winter tones. We have picked out our favourite colour trends to help you decide on your new look. Under-Lights Forget summery highlights – under-lights are one of this season’s must-haves. Nestled underneath a warm wintery base or your natural hair colour, these “peek-a-boo” highlights are perfect for the winter. If you’re afraid of a big change, this understated look is perfect for brightening up your hairstyle. Stylist’s tip: Try Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion at the roots to boost the under-lights and add some volume to your look. Colour Melting Dark, rich, wintery tones are perfect for warming up your look. Copper on copper, orange on red or chocolate brown – it all merges seamlessly. Orange is the current maple tone. Try a palate of deep red-orange or mulberry as your colour base and add in light to heavy copper tones for a colour melt that will really pop when your hair catches the light! 66 Winter Redheads If you want the quintessential style for winter 2014, try opting for warm auburn or blood red orange shades. These divine hues are part of an emerging drift towards colours that are dreamier, angelic and soft. Think delicate and luxurious copper tones that give your hair depth and shine and talk to your colourist about what shades of red and will work best with your complexion and lifestyle. Buttery Blondes If you’re not ready to go dark, don’t worry! Rich, buttery blonde tones are the perfect lighter option this season – think Michelle Williams, Candice Swanepoel and Kate Moss. These champagne blonde tones are perfectly paired with a short, cropped and unblended bob or straight fringes. Icelandic blonde tones were also a must at the New York Fashion Week, worn with baggy braids swept across the face, a sleek side-part and neutral lips. HIGH-FASHION COLOURS Bright, eye-catching colours have been around for a while and are another favourite. Take inspiration from Kelly Osborne, Nicole Richie and Katy Perry with colour pops, pastels, greens and rainbow tones that really stand out from the crowd. Slate grey, violet pastel and green tips are the biggest colour trends. Be daring and try Aveda’s Culture Clash collection for a bright, London-inspired look. GLOSS IT UP This winter we all want shine and non-split ends. Aveda’s glossing demi permanent colours have a super high shine factor, packed with natural oils to end last summer’s beach romance. Tired of having the same thing? Have your colourist add a gloss to your highlights or existing colour and follow with a colour enhancing conditioner. It is non-permanent and, therefore, perfect for colour-shy guests. 77 CATWALK HAIR BY TRIBE LIFESTYLE helps sportscraft celebrate 100 years of AUSTRALIAN fashion 8 Sportscraft has become one of Australia’s most iconic lifestyle brands over the last 100 years, and in 2014, that rich history is revealed through a star-studded campaign. To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Sportscraft took to the catwalk at David Jones to showcase its Iconic Collection, and Tribe Lifestyle was the proud hair partner for this landmark event. Our team was busy backstage styling the hair of 18 models, keeping in line with the brand’s quintessential Australian feel with a casual girl and guy-nextdoor look. The ladies headed down the runway with beachy waves and a deep side part while the gents kept it cool with a relaxed, urban look. 9 GO FROM NATURALLY CURLY TO NATURALLY STRAIGHT Eliminate unwanted waves with the power of plants with the new Naturally Straight styling creme, Aveda’s latest addition to the Smooth Infusion range Perfectly straight locks aren’t easy to come by. Generally, the process involves an awful lot of stretching, pulling and damaging the hair to achieve a look that only lasts a short time. But Aveda has just launched a new product that is a gamechanger when it comes to straight hair. Forget subjecting your hair to cruel and unusual punishment. Aveda Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight is a lightweight styling creme that uses the power of pure flower and plant essences to eliminate unwanted waves with every use, making hair easier to straighten morning after morning and helping to keep 10 hair straight for longer. Unlike chemical straightening treatments, Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight does not penetrate the hair shaft or modify their hair’s natural bonds, instead working from the outside by adding an imperceptible surface layer to the hair that continues to eliminate unwanted waves every time you use it. Smooth Infusion Naturally Straight’s plant fibres invisibly attach to each hair strand during straightening to loosen waves and help hold your straight style in place. Forget about humidity as well – Aveda has taken the stress out of hot and rainy days by adding in tapioca starch and maise, which create a humidity barrier to help fend off frizz. The more you use the styling creme, the easier it is to achieve straight locks each day – to the point where you will cut time from your styling routine whilst still achieving the perfect look. Naturally Straight is part of the comprehensive Aveda Smooth Infusion collection of products specially formulated to smooth or straighten hair while dramatically reducing frizz and defending against humidity. The line includes Shampoo, Conditioner, StylePrep Smoother and Glossing Straightener, all of which are available in our salons. After five years in Westfield Chatswood, the time for change has come, with Tribe Lifestyle moving to an exciting new location in Chatswood Chase Shopping Centre. The fresh and contemporary salon, designed by David Selden, is located on Level 1, close to Camilla and Seed. “We have created a fantastic synergy with the Chase consumer for over 10 12 years through our Luc Espace salon. This has allowed us to grow Tribe into a larger, brand new space within our business model,” says owner Luke Smart. Consistent with the group’s heritage and commitment to sustainable development, the new salon features a 140 m2 open-plan, creative space enhanced by the use of sustainable materials, such as FSC certified timber. All paint and floor finishes, signage, lacquers and sealants are low in volatile organic compounds and environmentally friendly. The fresh, white studio environment is punctuated by elements of natural blackbutt timber and black steel. The design makes clever use of lighting for the different salon functions, creating a journey of discovery through the space. The new features include a community table, where guests can look, touch and feel Aveda products and in-salon rituals, as well as a designated area for training sessions and consumer workshops. It’s not just hair that will catch the attention of salon guests and passersby. The new Tribe Lifestyle salon also has a 30m² exhibition wall, which will be offered to a new artist each month on an ongoing basis. The salon has first partnered with Black Eye Gallery’s director and photographer Tom Evangelidis, who debuts the art wall with selected stills of St Petersburg from his publication Façade. Façade documents an eclectic mix of architectural eras – from the gothic beauty of the 13th century to the ornate decadence of the 18th century and the austere classicism of the communist era in the 20th century. Evangelidis has selected four large-format stills to adorn the salon’s exhibition wall from July 11th to August 15th. All pieces are available for sale during the period of the exhibition. 13 14 15 AVEDA COLOUR HARMONY AWARD 2014 HONOURING CREATIVITY AND TECHNICAL SKILL Junior and senior stylists from Luc Espace and Tribe Lifestyle compete in this year’s Aveda Colour Harmony Awards Our stylists show off their talents in the salon every single day, but once a year they also have the opportunity to showcase their schools in an entirely different environment. Styling director Dario Di Tirro, technical director Janelle Dongalen, senior stylists James Wilson and Ommani Saraswati, and junior stylists Mercedes Bugeni, Paige Cumming and Jennifer Redwood entered into this year’s Aveda Colour Harmony Awards, where they were given the task of reinterpreting Aveda’s Spring 2014 Collection, Culture Clash, in their own way. The competition was a first for junior stylists Mercedes, Paige 16 and Jennifer. Dario saw it as a fantastic opportunity for them to strengthen and develop their skills as they looked at style from head to toe whilst mentored by the senior stylists. The whole team was involved in every stage of the process – from sharing their thoughts on hair colour and style to choosing a model and their outfit and brainstorming makeup ideas with makeup artist Donald Hollingsworth. Donald created the makeup for all seven models and approached the Culture Clash looks in a cinematic way, taking inspiration from movies such as Avatar, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Wolf of Wall Street, Point Break and High School Musical. Each of the stylists found their inspiration in different places. Dario, for instance, was inspired by an old Vogue Magazine editorial featuring African warriors. He searched the streets of Sydney to find a model who was half Australian, half Cambodian and could perfectly represent the melting pot of cultures he had in mind. The competition was an incredible opportunity for the entire team to create and share inspiring ideas whilst also enhancing their colour work. TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HAIR Find out how Tribe Chatswood stylist Dolly Sangawar transformed Katherine’s waist length hair to cute a one-length bob with a 20s-inspired short fringe Making a drastic hair change can be daunting, but Tribe Chatswood stylist Dolly Sangawar recently completed a total hair makeover for our client Katherine, who was in need of a change from her long, thick locks that fell past her waist. Taking inspiration from NZ artist Kimbra’ super cute retro style, Katherine came to Dolly to talk about her hair transformation and discuss the different options and styles they could achieve before picking up the scissors. Dolly made sure to analyse every detail in order to create the perfect look for her, choosing a style that would perfectly complement her heart-shaped face and features. But Katherine’s luscious locks weren’t going to be left on the salon floor. Instead, her ponytail was donated to CanTeen, a national peer support organisation for young people living with cancer. Dolly created a classic, yet versatile style, which suited Katherine’s thick hair and natural waves. She will be able to wear it wavy, curled or straight as Dolly created a one-length bob with no layers whilst also taking some weight from the inside to soften the hairstyle and give it a bit of texture. Thinking of going for the chop? Call one of our salons and book in for a complimentary consultation! We’ll be happy to discuss ideas, give you professional advice and guide you through the choice of your new hairstyle. 17 FEEL THE MAGIC HEALING HEARTS Luc Espace’s senior colourist Peter Maloney is putting on his running shoes to brighten the lives of kids who have lost someone they love Luc Espace’s Peter Maloney is passionate about much more than just hair. In 2013, he joined the Feel The Magic Foundation, created by his friends James and Kristy Thomas, with a big mission in mind: to lift the spirits of children who have lost their parent(s) or a sibling due to illness or unfortunate circumstances. The foundation works with families to create new positive memories after experiencing 18 heart-wrenching grief and loss – and they do that by sending these families to the most magical place on earth: Disneyland. It’s a once in a lifetime adventure that helps heal their hearts and allows them to enjoy themselves once again. The families return home reconnected in a powerful way of living, with memories they will never forget. Choosing a family is not an easy task. Peter is the one who speaks to every nominee, hears their story and, if chosen, opens his heart to offer a hand in creating a new pathway for an adventure to Disneyland. Peter’s passion for helping people drives him to work harder for these families, to the point where he is preparing to run 14 km in the Sydney City2Surf – and you can help support this initiative through his fundraising page (https:// city2surf2014.everydayhero. com/au/peter-17). Tackling Heartbreak Hill to heal hearts in need We all know about Heartbreak Hill – it’s the steepest incline of the City2Surf and perhaps the biggest challenge of the course. But this challenge is a small feat compared to what the Feel The Magic’s families have endured. That’s why Peter is lacing up his running shoes and getting ready for City2Surf on August 10th. His goal is to raise $5,000 – a quarter of the cost of sending a family to Disneyland. The family Peter is raising money for is the Day Family. Grant Day and his two daughters Gemma and Eboni lost their wife and mum Libby in July 2013. This special trip to Disneyland will allow the family to heal and enjoy time together away from the hustle and bustle of life. I know someone who needs help. Losing a parent or sibling can have a severe and dramatic impact on a child’s life as well as those around them. If you know a child or family who is in need of support, you can nominate them at www. feelthemagic.org.au. How can I find out more about the foundation? You can learn more about Feel The Magic by visiting their website, where you will find information about past and present families, events and fundraisers. You can also follow their Facebook page at www. facebook.com/FeelTheMagic. How can I help? If you’d like to help Peter and the Feel The Magic Foundation send the Day family to Disneyland, you can sponsor him at City2Surf through his fundraising page (https:// city2surf2014.everydayhero. com/au/peter-17) and share it with your friends and family. There’s the French braid, the inverted braid, the fishtail braid, and the milkmaid braid – but we wanted to show you something new! The upside down braided bun combines a ballerina bun with an upside down braid for a look that is much easier than you’d think to achieve. This hairstyle is suitable for almost any occasion as it’s casual enough for hanging out with friends and perfectly styled for a wedding or a night out on the town. Glam it up by adding some pearl or crystal hair pins or a pretty bow or style it down by forming a looser bun. All you’ll need to complete th look is a paddle brush, bobby pins, an elastic hair band and Aveda Air Control Hair Spray. This looks works well on the second day of washing so your hair has a little grip. 20 Start braiding upward, taking diagonal sections of hair towards the crown of your head. Slightly backcomb the very front section of your hair. Flip your head over and brush from the ends to the roots of your hair to add volume. 1 3 2 Starting at the nape of your head, take a triangular section of hair and divide it into three sections. Secure your bun with bobby pins, slightly pulling a few pieces of hair out around the face for a softer look. Spray with Aveda Air Control to keep your hair in place. Once you reach the crown, gather your hair and tie it into a high ponytail. 6 4 5 Slightly backcomb the ponytail from the ends and then wrap your hair around itself to create a bun (you may also use a bun enhancer to add bulk). 21 YOUR HAIR PROBLEMS SOLVED Thinning hair, unruly locks, damage and greys are frustrations that so many men face. Follow our tips to get to the root of your problems and put them in the past by Antonino Chisari, senior hairdresser at Tribe Lifestyle CBD My hair is fine and limp and I find it very hard to style it. How can I make my hair look fuller, thicker and healthier? This is a common problem for men and the answer is often a great haircut combined with quality products. A 1920s-style haircut achieves a fuller look by finely graduating the hair. Longer hair is also coming back in style for men and can help create more volume and body. Try using the Invati System to promote healthy hair growth and add body. The Pure Abundance Hair Potion instantly thickens the hair by 17% and is the perfect finishing product, creating texture and volume. If you’re after a stronger hold, try Aveda’s Men Pure-Formance Grooming Clay. 22 I have an annoying little sprig of hair that seems to grow in a different direction from everything else and just won’t lie down. What’s the best way to control a cowlick? Cowlicks are a struggle for many people – but don’t be tempted to cut it short to try to solve the problem. The best way to control a cowlick is to work with it instead of trying to fight it. Work a small amount of Aveda’s Men PureFormance Grooming Clay between your palms and evenly apply it into damp or dry hair. You want to work with your cowlick rather than going against it. I swim a lot and my hair tends to get very dry and damaged. How can I protect it from pool chlorine? Any harsh chemicals will damage the hair, however, you can work to prevent it by using specialised products. The Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil is lightweight, water resistant and non-greasy and works by forming an invisible screen, which protects hair for up to 16 hours and minimises damage and dryness. Protect your hair even more by shampooing with the Sun Care Hair and Body Cleanser, which will gently remove chlorine and salt from the hair. I want to blend away grey hair without completely obliterating my natural hair colour. How can I achieve and maintain a subtle and natural colour so it doesn’t look like dyed hair? The easiest way for me to explain how to achieve this is by telling you how I colour my own hair. I’m 30% grey so I use a demi colour not to lift my own colour, but to stay close to it. By blending the grey with my natural hair colour I’m able to achieve a no regrowth look when the hair is growing out. I also suggest choosing a darker colour for the sides and back to create the illusion of thicker hair and more body. Aveda’s Color Conserve range will keep your hair colour vibrant longer. 23 CREATE PURE MOMENTS OF PEACE shapure, NEW for body and bath TM Experience the calming aroma with 25 pure flower and plants essences. 24 SAY HELLO TO STRAIGHT LOCKS AND GOODBYE TO SPLIT ENDS Struggling with unwanted frizz or split ends? The Brazilian Blowout Smoothing Treatment and the Split Ends Repairing Treatment can change the way you look at your hair Frizzy hair is a problem faced by so many of us – especially when trying to achieve that perfect look. You’re at the mercy of the weather, fighting against humidity and rain, and it doesn’t matter how many layers of hairspray you apply, the frizz still remains. But it may not have to be that way. We’ve been trialling a number of keratin treatments lately in order to find the best one for our clients – and we’ve found it! The Brazilian Blowout Professional Smoothing Treatment works to smooth the hair, enhance its shine, reduce frizz and improve the health of the hair through a single 90-minute application, with results lasting up to 16 weeks. But it’s not just frizz we’re targeting. We’ve also found a great solution for banishing those unsightly split ends. The Split Ends Repairing Treatment uses a thermomarine bonding system and a super nutrient complex to fill in and bind broken hair fibres together, mend split ends and prevent future breakage in a 10-minute application. Our stylists have loved that both treatments are not only formaldehyde-free but also odourless, both during and after treatment, meaning no watering eyes or stinging scalps. Best of all for our busy lives, there’s no downtime for either treatment. The minute you leave the salon, you can wash and air dry your hair, workout or put your hair up in a ponytail and it will be smooth, frizz-free and radiant.
