Letter from the principal
Dear Eagle Family,
With over half of the school year completed we continue to strive for excellence
in our academic, athletic, and performing arts programs. As winter comes to a
close and we enter our spring season, we look forward to continued successes.
We are also anticipating the beginning of our testing season. The following is
the “tentative” schedule for state assessments. The FCAT Writing assessment was
administered February 25th. Our FCAT Re-takes for juniors and seniors will begin
April 7th and FCAT 2.0 Reading will be administered between April 14th – May 2nd.
From May 5th – May 19th we will be administering the U.S. History End-of-Course
Exam and the Biology End-of-Course Exam. From May 12th – May 16th we will be
administering the Algebra I End-of-Course Exam. The Geometry End-of Course
Exam will be administered from May 19th – May 23rd. More information will be
shared with parents as we approach these test dates.
Thank you to all who came to Eagle PRIDE Night on Thursday, March 13, 2014.
We hope that you were able to meet with all your student’s teachers to discuss their
academic progress. We encourage you to monitor your child’s attendance and
academic progress using eSembler. This program can be accessed by visiting
http://grades.lake.k12.fl.us . There you will find an online tutorial on how to use the
system to monitor student progress.
We continue to hold high expectations for behavior and attendance at South
Lake High School. The full potential for academic growth is only possible when
students are in class as often as possible when they are not ill. Please encourage
all of our eagles to attend class every day!
Again, thank you for continuing to work with us to provide the very best
educational environment we can for our students to produce outstanding results.
We encourage you to contact your students’ teachers for available times to meet
with you to discuss students’ progress at any time throughout the year. We will
continue to raise the standard of excellence at South Lake High School in order
to achieve our goal of being recognized as one of the premier high schools in
the state of Florida.

of students with disabilities
Your child may be eligible to participate in the John M. McKay Scholarship for Students with
Disabilities Program for the 2014-15 school year.
In order to be eligible for the McKay Scholarship Program, a student must apply for the program
prior to withdrawing from public school. The student must have an Individual Education Plan (IEP),
or 504 Accommodation Plan issued under s. 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (with duration of

public school during the school year prior to applying for a scholarship; or

student membership surveys (Grades K-12).
If your child meets these requirements you may receive a scholarship for your child to attend a
participating private school. Parents may also choose another public school within the district’s school
choice plan or another public school in an adjacent school district. In order for a student to be eligible for
the program, an intent to participate in the McKay Scholarship Program must be filed on the Department of
Education’s School Choice website (www.floridaschoolchoice.org) prior to withdrawing from public school.
The deadline to apply for the first payment period of the 2014-15 school year is July 3, 2014. Zone waiver
procedures must be followed for public school choice requests under the McKay.
This notice does not guarantee your student’s eligibility. To learn more about
your child’s educational options, contact the Department of Education, Office of
Independent Education and Parental Choice Information Hotline at 1-800-447-1636
or visit the website at www.floridaschoolchoice.org and select the John M. McKay
Scholarship Program for Students with Disabilities Program option. You may file your
intent online. For more information, contact your school or Sharon Rodgers, ESE Program

Cherie Burgess, 11th grade Certified School Counselor at South
Lake High School, recently collaborated with Jessica Delgado, LSSC
Dual Enrollment Manager, to organize an Open Forum for current 11th
grade dual enrollment students. Mrs. Burgess’s goal was to provide a safe
place where students could share their dual enrollment experiences. Probing
questions such as, “How did you learn about dual enrollment? Are there
differences between your AP and Dual Enrollment classes?
Did taking dual enrollment classes affect your high
school schedule? Was the checklist easy to follow?,
were discussed at the meeting. Mrs. Burgess states,
“We must engage our students and listen to their
ideas if we are to truly provide a college
and career ready culture. Once students
have experienced and mastered a
process, they become the experts.
It’s community that matters – students
helping students. Our DE enrollment
students will serve as mentors to potential
DE students.” Jessica Delgado states,
“The opportunity itself I believe will have
a great impact on your future and
current dual enrollment students and
I am looking forward to see what
comes of this new effort. The
feedback we received from
our students was wonderful.”

On February 1st, twenty-five of our South Lake HOSA students
traveled to Keiser University in Orlando to compete in the Region 10 HOSA
competition. HOSA students from Lake, Orange, Seminole, and Osceola
county schools participated in the event. Our South Lake students excelled
in many events. Mrs. Kry and Mr. Hebert are extremely proud of the team
this year. Over half the students are first-year members in HOSA. The students
really embraced the challenge of competing under pressure and were wellprepared to compete. Our top 3 finishers in each event have qualified for
the HOSA State Competition which will be held in April at Disney’s Coronado
Springs Resort Hotel. On February 18th those
who paid their HOSA dues were given their pin,
HOSA certificate, and HOSA card during HOSA
S pinning ceremony. From March 7th through
March 9th, HOSA had a successful booth at
Pig on the Pond selling lollipops. HOSA State
