Lifesaving Sport Technical Official Course
Mr Sim Lye Hock, Chair of SLSS Sports Committee, led the training
Although it was not the first time a Technical Official Course was conducted for Lifesaving Sport, it was
the first conducted under the format of having Technical Official grades
Sunday morning, 11 May 2014, about 25 participants gather at the multi-purpose hall at the National
University of Singapore’s Sports and Recreational Centre (NUS SRC) for the Technical Official Level 01
Course. Under the new guidelines, there will be 3 grades of Technical Official with Level 01 being the most
junior. An official can progress up to Level 03 where he/she is eligible to be appointed for all roles
including referees and meet managers.
As a Level 01 official, participants can be expect to take on important roles during lifesaving competitions
including Lane and Turn Judges, Placing and Finishing Judges, Stewards and Timekeepers. As a Level
02 official, one can be appointed as Deputy Referees, Chief Judges, Starters and Recorders.
Mr Pui Kangrui, Head of SLSS Competition Unit
Active discussion in progress
Lifesaving Sport Technical Official Course (cont)
The course starts in the morning at 10.30am, directly after the Team Managers meeting for the NUS
Invitational. The course was conducted by Mr Sim Lye Hock, Chair of SLSS Sport Committee and Mr Pui
Kangrui, Head of SLSS Competition Unit. Kangrui started with a short ice-breaking introductory session
followed by an introduction to the program, the new format and followed by those events that are usually
being contested during lifesaving competitions.
After lunch, all the participants proceed to the poolside for a practical demonstration. With the helps of a
few NUS volunteers, participants spent the day spotting mistakes made by the volunteer demonstrators
and justifying reasons for disqualification. It was a vital exercise that gives participants exposure to what to
look out for and how to spot disqualifications amidst the splashing and water movement.
The course is not the end of the Level 01 journey as each participant will be awarded a certificate after
completing 16 hours of service as an official. These 16 hours can be accumulated at major events like the
upcoming National Lifesaving Championships, the recently concluded NUS Invitational or at International
Competitions such as World Championships or Commonwealth Championships.
SLSS would like to thank Mr Sim Lye Hock, Mr Pui Kangrui, Mr Liang Yaowen, the NUS volunteers and all
the participants for their attendance and for helping to bring Lifesaving Sport in Singapore one more step
forward.

Monthly Lifesaving
Clinic @ Sentosa
Saturday, 31 May 2014. It was 2pm and the atmosphere in
Sentosa’s Palawan Beach was a relatively relaxed one.
Dating couples hold hands as they stroll along the shorelines,
3-generational families sat and laid around with the little ones
building sandcastles and the elderly looking on proudly. A
couple of Caucasian teenagers splashed water at each other,
cooling off in the heat.
Suddenly, a cry for help fills the air. The source of the sound is
easily spotted, about 20 metres out in the water, struggling for
help. Before anyone can overcome their shock, a Beach Patrol
Officer is already running down the beach with a surf board in
tow, gracefully launching his craft and in seconds the drowning
victim is saved. Fortunately for everyone, this was not a real
drowning but a demonstration conducted by the Sentosa
Beach Patrol Officers.
Occasionally, with the help of Sentosa, the usual lifesaving
clinic will be spiced up with a short demo such as this
instance. After that, it was business as usual.

After the overcoming of a series of unforeseen administrative difficulties, the SLSS Lifesaving
Instructor Course managed to get the 27th batch gone on smoothly without major hiccups. For
that, we thank Sport Singapore for their kind consideration in our request of use of facilities and
also to Mr Jeremy Neo, Centre Manager of Toa Payoh SRC, for his prompt support provided.
The recently concluded 27th Lifesaving Instructor Course attracted around 40 men and women
from all walks of life. Besides the usual swimming coaches and lifeguards and students, we had
lecturers, retirees and fulltime National Service men who signed up.
The Lifesaving Instructor Course is the first step towards becoming a Lifesaving Instructor.
Participants are put through 3 tests and required to pass all 3 before they are deemed to have
been successful in the course. Following that, they will have to teach a class of Lifesaving 1,2,3
students under a qualified mentor and be tested on their teaching ability.

Safety), Conducting Suitable Aquatic Activities for People with Disabilities (by Mr Bob Lim,

The course was intensive and participants had to take a theory test, a skill test and perform a

gave our participants valuable feedback to improve their personal and teaching skills: Mr Lee
Lingen, Mr Nicky Sho, Mr Jeremy Phee, Mr Isaac Lee, Mr Tang Yong Chong, Mr Koh Kah Wei,

15th NUS Invitational Lifesaving Championships 2014
31 May and 01 June 2014

NUS University Lifeguard Corp
Once again, on 31st May and 1st June 2014, we have successfully hosted the 15th NUS Invitational
Lifesaving Championship with 16 Lifesaving organisations and 30 teams participating in this year’s
event!
This year, 15th NUS Invitational Lifesaving Championship has introduced a new category - Youth
Category. This new addition targets the young and aspiring lifesavers that are below 17 years old. With
this new category, Singapore’s upcoming lifesavers will have an opportunity to garner experience and
build confidence in their lifesaving skills. The Youth Category also acts as a stepping-stone for these
junior lifesavers to achieve their best in future competitions.
Everyone was in luck this year! After 2 years of absence due to bad weather, SERC (Stimulated
Emergency Response Competition), the popular event adapted from the World Lifesaving
Championships, was finally conducted under bright and sunny weather. It was definitely a joy to watch
all 12 participating teams display their use of initiative, knowledge, judgment, and abilities to act as a
team and apply lifesaving skills during this
event. Of course, not forgetting the hilarious
role of the “Hysterical Parent”!
We had the honour to compete next to
Australia’s National Lifesaving Team, Aussie
Barras, in the last NUS Invitational Lifesaving
Championship. This year, we were graced by
distinguished competitors from National Taiwan
University. We all had a brilliant time mingling,
making new friends, and exchanging skills (and
gifts). Thank you friends of National Taiwan
University! All of us from ULC thoroughly
enjoyed your company and we hope that you
had fun in Singapore too. ☺

15th NUS Invitational Lifesaving Championships 2014
31 May and 01 June 2014
(Cont)
As with every NUS Invitational Lifesaving
Championship, ULC hopes that every
competitor will strive to bring glory and
pride to their individual teams, forge new
friendships, and secure the future of this
sport. Despite belonging to different teams,
15th NUS Invitational Lifesaving
Championship builds a sense of belonging
to this bigger community, and a mutual
exchange of skills and understanding of
the sport and its responsibilities.
Our 15th NUS Invitational Lifesaving
Championship Management Committee
want to take the opportunity to thank all
officials, participants, and supporters for
making this competition possible.
We would also like to congratulate our very
own NUS team for being coming in First for
both Division A Women and Men’s Team
and finally, being awarded with Overall
Champion for Division A. Congratulations
to Temasek Polytechnic and Singapore

coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively for their
Division A teams. We also want to
congratulate all Division B winners for
putting up a good game - Sports Eagle
(1st), NUS (2nd) and Ngee Ann
Polytechnic (3rd). Last but not least, a
special congratulation to all Youth
Competitors! An exceptional job done by
Pacific Swim School, San Zhen Swimming
School and Pacific Swim Club for claiming

Hope to see you next year at our 16th NUS
