a view
You will not want to miss the spectacular event that will take place on September
21 in Hampstead. The parade will have an
amazing array of participants and it is all
free.
Reflecting our theme, “Looking back,
moving forward,” we will have a horsedriven antique fire wagon plus other fantastic antique cars, as well as a prototype
futuristic car – the Felino (driven by its
developer and race car driver). It has never
been driven on city streets before. Plus the
Royal Montreal Regiment will be there,
100-soldiers strong with banners unfurled
and bayonets fixed, along with their band.
In keeping with our diversity theme,
we will have over 15 different ethnic
groups dancing their way down the streets
of Hampstead. There will also be Panama
– a Filipino professional dance troupe,
Zaruba – a Brazilian show group in amazing costumes and head dresses, Chinese
performers doing the lion and dragon
dances, renowned salsa dancers San
Tropez, Bollywood dancers, Roller Derby
girls, BMX bike performers and much,
much more.
We will also have musical bands, helicopter fly-bys, the Mounties on their
horses, the police band and cavalry, cheerleaders, stunt and circus performers, Segal
Centre singers and dancers, giveaways and
much, much more. See the Hampstead
web site, Hampstead.qc.ca, and click on
the centennial banner for a complete list.
Show follows parade
Following the parade, the show will begin with the spectacular arrival of Ginette
Reno and a well known sports personality.
We have gotten the amazing C & C Music
Factory and Weather Girls star, Martha
Wash to sing her hits including, “It’s Raining Men.” Then it is on to the fabulous
Crystal Waters and her hit “100% Pure
Love.” The newest, hottest rock and roll
band, The Damn Truth, will follow. A 12piece band, the BackBeat Show Band will
entertain us with hits from the 1960s up to
today. Plus, we will have Richard Yanofsky’s all-star band and illusionist David
Lion will astound you in between. Finally,
the night will end with phenomenal musical fireworks.
We are inviting residents from all
around the island to come and celebrate
with us – rain or shine. An event like this
happens only once in a 100 years. Don’t
miss it!

Hacikyaner sprucing up Hampstead
School for centennial, school year
by Stephanie O’Hanley
She’s only been principal of Hampstead
School a short while but Hilda Hacikyaner
has been sprucing the place up.
The school’s grounds and interior first
floor will be used for Hampstead’s centennial parade on September 21. “It’s a
big thing for us,” Hacikyaner said. “Some
of our students will be participating in the
parade.”
“We just had some landscaping work
done around the school,” Hacikyaner said.
“We had some of the hedges trimmed,
some of the overgrown trees cut.”
“Over the summer, I had some painting
done,” she said. “The first floor was
painted, [and] one of the main staircases
was painted.”
There’s a vegetable garden growing in
front of the school which, Hacikyaner
proudly points out, “is a garden the children themselves actually planted.”
Haciknayer was vice-principal at Lester
B. Pearson High School when in May she
learned she was replacing Christina
Chilelli, who went on maternity leave.
“I was very happy about the news because I had heard about Hampstead for
years,” Hacikyaner said. “I knew about the
fantastic reading program called Success

August 27, from 1 pm to 8:30 pm, at the
Irving L. Adessky Community Centre, 30
Lyncroft Road.
Pool closing party & family movie night
Join us at Hampstead pool on Sunday,
August 31 at 4 pm for the end-of-summer
pool party. There will be an inflatable, refreshments, our always popular lifeguard
games, and much more! Stick around
later that evening for family movie night,
where we will present Back to the Future
starring Michael J. Fox. The show begins
after sunset; please bring a chair.
Tennis discount
Mid-season discounts on tennis memberships tennis players can now take advantage of special mid-season discounts
on season passes at the Hampstead tennis courts, now at 40 percent off of regular price. There is plenty of playing sea-
for All and I was very excited to be coming
here to work with the staff and work with
this program.” The language arts program
is designed to benefit both advanced students and students with learning difficulties.
Hacikyaner doesn’t live in the Hampstead area but having worked as vice-principal at Willingdon School and as a teacher
there for many years, Hacikyaner says she
knows the area well. “As you can see it’s a
beautiful area, a residential setting with
lots of green space.”
Before she worked at Willingdon,
Hacikyaner taught at Dunrae Gardens
School in Town of Mount Royal. “I have
many years of experience.
“My goal is really to elevate the school
academically and socially,” she said. “It’s a
great school, a gem of a school. I have a lot
of conviction that we really can reach all
our students with special needs and have
them experience success each and every
day. I have about 15 teachers and 15 child
care workers so together I think we can
make some progress.
“Hopefully I’m here for a long time,”
added Hacikyaner, who is the third new
principal the school has seen in recent
years. “It’s a wonderful school. I like working with kids with special needs.”
