HAMPSTEAD NEWS 22 – THE FREE PRESS – August 26, 2014 Coming September 21: An incredible parade and concert bill steinberg town with a view You will not want to miss the spectacular event that will take place on September 21 in Hampstead. The parade will have an amazing array of participants and it is all free. Reflecting our theme, “Looking back, moving forward,” we will have a horsedriven antique fire wagon plus other fantastic antique cars, as well as a prototype futuristic car – the Felino (driven by its developer and race car driver). It has never been driven on city streets before. Plus the Royal Montreal Regiment will be there, 100-soldiers strong with banners unfurled and bayonets fixed, along with their band. In keeping with our diversity theme, we will have over 15 different ethnic groups dancing their way down the streets of Hampstead. There will also be Panama – a Filipino professional dance troupe, Zaruba – a Brazilian show group in amazing costumes and head dresses, Chinese performers doing the lion and dragon dances, renowned salsa dancers San Tropez, Bollywood dancers, Roller Derby girls, BMX bike performers and much, much more. We will also have musical bands, helicopter fly-bys, the Mounties on their horses, the police band and cavalry, cheerleaders, stunt and circus performers, Segal Centre singers and dancers, giveaways and much, much more. Show follows parade Following the parade, the show will begin with the spectacular arrival of Ginette Reno and a well known sports personality. We have gotten the amazing C & C Music Factory and Weather Girls star, Martha Wash to sing her hits including, “It’s Raining Men.” Then it is on to the fabulous Crystal Waters and her hit “100% Pure Love.” The newest, hottest rock and roll band, The Damn Truth, will follow. A 12piece band, the BackBeat Show Band will entertain us with hits from the 1960s up to today. Plus, we will have Richard Yanofsky’s all-star band and illusionist David Lion will astound you in between. Finally, the night will end with phenomenal musical fireworks. We are inviting residents from all around the island to come and celebrate with us – rain or shine. An event like this happens only once in a 100 years. Don’t miss it! Bill Steinberg is the mayor of the town of Hampstead Hacikyaner sprucing up Hampstead School for centennial, school year by Stephanie O’Hanley She’s only been principal of Hampstead School a short while but Hilda Hacikyaner has been sprucing the place up. The school’s grounds and interior first floor will be used for Hampstead’s centennial parade on September 21. “It’s a big thing for us,” Hacikyaner said. “Some of our students will be participating in the parade.” “We just had some landscaping work done around the school,” Hacikyaner said. “We had some of the hedges trimmed, some of the overgrown trees cut.” “Over the summer, I had some painting done,” she said. “The first floor was painted, [and] one of the main staircases was painted.” There’s a vegetable garden growing in front of the school which, Hacikyaner proudly points out, “is a garden the children themselves actually planted.” Haciknayer was vice-principal at Lester B. Pearson High School when in May she learned she was replacing Christina Chilelli, who went on maternity leave. “I was very happy about the news because I had heard about Hampstead for years,” Hacikyaner said. “I knew about the fantastic reading program called Success Hampstead Happenings 8th Annual Blood Drive Give the gift of life on Wednesday, August 27, from 1 pm to 8:30 pm, at the Irving L. Hacikyaner doesn’t live in the Hampstead area but having worked as vice-principal at Willingdon School and as a teacher there for many years, Hacikyaner says she knows the area well. “As you can see it’s a beautiful area, a residential setting with lots of green space.” Before she worked at Willingdon, Hacikyaner taught at Dunrae Gardens School in Town of Mount Royal. “I have many years of experience. “My goal is really to elevate the school academically and socially,” she said. “It’s a great school, a gem of a school. I have a lot of conviction that we really can reach all our students with special needs and have them experience success each and every day. I have about 15 teachers and 15 child care workers so together I think we can make some progress. “Hopefully I’m here for a long time,” added Hacikyaner, who is the third new principal the school has seen in recent years. “It’s a wonderful school.
