isaMasterClass is the musical summer camp of the mdw – University of Music and Performing
Arts Vienna. Each year, more than 200 participants from 40 different nations receive training geared
to highly advanced and talented musicians in this programme held in Austria’s Semmering region.
24th International Summer Academy
isaFestival presents the highlights from 14 days of intensive artistic work in more than 40 concerts!
These concerts’ main focus is represented by the two series “International Laureates” and
“Open Chamber Music”, which feature award-winning ensembles and young stars such as
Harriet Krijgh, Magda Amara, Daniel Ottensamer, Christoph Traxler, Trio Karénine and Trio Gaspard,
as well as prominent names like Vilmos Szabadi, Quartetto di Cremona, Stefano Bagliano,
Dora Schwarzberg and the Artis Quartet.
Following the great response to the first edition of isaOperaVienna last year, this successful
format will be continued! The singers’ course of isa14 will be embedded in the production of
Mozart’s entire “Da Ponte” cycle, and the young singers will receive coaching in operatic stage
performance in addition to the singing lessons, while also having the opportunity to benefit from
additional workshops on body work and auditioning.
isaOperaVienna participants are also eligible for selection to participate in the 2nd International Otto
Edelmann Singing Competition – Vienna and may be chosen to perform with orchestra at the exceptional b
aroque theater Schlosstheater Schönbrunn, where both Haydn and Mozart once performed.
isaScience brings together research-related mdw departments and their guests from all over
the world with young artists for a mutually enriching exchange of ideas. isaScience is intended
to become a forum for the music and culture-related academic research community while also
reaching out to the general audience of both musicians and music enthusiasts, and it takes place
concurrent with and linked to the artistic activities of isa.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
Preface
The development of society, of any cultural community, depends on people reflecting and
working on past events. This year’s edition of isa will not only look back to the events
of 1814, 1914 and 1989, but also examine the changes we have been through since and in
what way these changes have affected our lives – as a society and as a cultural community.
As rector of one of the biggest cultural institutions in the world,
I wish you muchinspirationand personal development as you explore
and visit the wide range of courses, concerts and workshops of isa14.
Werner Hasitschka
Rector of the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna

Times
of Change
Welcome to isa14!
The 24th edition of our university’s summer campus and festival will once again bring together an
elite of internationally renowned artists and outstanding and promising talents just beginning to
spread their wings!
isa14’s topic “Times of Change” gives us the chance to reflect not only on the three most
important anniversaries of this year (1914, 1814 and 1989), but also on other important turning
points in history. We will be exploring the contexts within which some of “pillars” of our musical
repertoire were created.
How are shattering turns in history reflected in music production and performance?
What are their implications?
It is fantastic that the challenging new features of last year turned out to be such a great
success. This fact has enabled us to proceed in developing these new formats further!
isaScience, as an exciting forum for an international, music and art-related research community,
ffers an impressive programme that is closely linked with the workshops and master classes of isa.
o
isaOperaVienna, with its unique combination of professional singing and stage performance courses, the 2nd edition of the International Otto Edelmann Competition, and the production of all three
Da Ponte operas by Mozart, takes place again in the perfect setting of Schlosstheater Schönbrunn. The isaFestival will make the Semmering region resound once more with stunning performances
by legendary figures of the international music scene as well as by up-and-coming stars!
I am happy to welcome all the distinguished artists and scholars and the amazing young musicians
and students, and I wish us all a fantastic time of creative experience, discoveries, and new
relationships!
Johannes Meissl

In my capacity as Governor of Lower Austria, I am proud of the fact that Lower Austria
provides an ideal atmosphere for a vibrant cultural life and a perfect setting for musicial
activity. We draw inspiration both from the old masters and from new creative ideas.
This enhances the quality of life in the region, accounts for the unique character of Lower
Austria as a business location, secures 12,000 jobs, promotes tourism, and stimulates the
economy. This is to everyone’s benfit – no wonder, therfore, that nine out of ten people
livivng in Lower Austria feel that art and culture are among the region’s foremost assets.
Preface
Dr. Erwin Pröll
Governor of Lower Austria
For the 24th time, isa, the summer campus of University of Music and Performing Arts
and its biggest recurring project, is taking place in the Semmering region this year.
No other part of Lower Austria would be better suited to this year’s motto:
“Times of Turmoil / Times of Change”, commemorating such major turning points
in history as occured in 1814, 1914 and 1989.
I wish isa14 and all the participating musicians every success, and
I am convinced that, once again, the audience will enjoy a fascinating
journey back in time to the music d
 ating from the years around
these momentous turning points in the history of our continent.
Dr. Erwin Pröll
Governor of Lower Austria
