Baker began the year a perfect 7-0 and 5-0 in the HAAC for the best start in head coach Mike Grossner’s 11-year tenure at Baker, but that perfect run ended last week on Saturday, Oct. 25 at No. 20 MNU in the NAIA Game of the Week. The Pioneers defeated Baker, 34-27, last week in overtime and puts Baker, Missouri Valley and MNU in a tie for first place in the HAAC standings at 5-1. Culver-Stockton enters Saturday with a record of 3-5 and 1-5 in the HAAC and hasn’t defeated the Baker Wildcats since 2006, as BU has defeated CSC seven-straight times National Rankings: including a 39-0 road win last season. 2014 Preseason Coaches’ Top 25 Poll: No. 7 Freshman Logan Brettell has emerged as the Wildcats starting quarterback in the last two week’s. Jim Joyner.....................................................Color Analyst Camren Torneden and Adonis Powell have been consistent threats in the running game for Baker as well, as Torneden leads the team with 466 yards rushing, while Powell has the 2014 HAAC FOOTBALL STANDINGS team lead in rushing touchdowns with four. HAAC | Record Leading the team receiving has been first year wideout Ladai Shawn Boose with his Baker 5-1 7-1 team leading 28 catches, 439 yards receiving and four touchdowns. MNU 5-1 6-1 Mike Stevenson and Duane Sims have been terrific in the secondary for Baker, as both Missouri Valley 5-1 5-2 have combined for eight interceptions. Stevenson has a team high five and Sims has Benedictine 4-2 5-3 three. Andre Jolly has continued to play up to his 2012 All-American status leading the Central Methodist 3-3 4-4 team with 6.5 sacks and Josh Kock has been stellar in the middle of the defensive line Graceland 3-3 4-4 with 4.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss he is tied for the team lead in that category with Evangel 2-4 4-4 Jolly and Tucker Pauley. In his 10 seasons, Baker has posted a record of, 72-45, good for a winning percentage of .615, ranking him seventh in school history and his 72 wins puts him fourth all time at BU. 2013 saw coach Grossner lead the Wildcats to a school-record 11 victories and captured its first HAAC regular season conference championship since 1993, earning him the 2013 HAAC Coach of the Year award. The Wildcats also defeated then-No. 13 ranked Sterling, 10-7, in the first round of the NAIA-FCS Playoffs for the programs first playoff victory since 1993. Also in 2013, the Wildcats garnered 24 All-HAAC award winners and posted nine Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, good for third-most in the entire NAIA. Throughout the season, BU was ranked as high as No. 4 in the NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 poll and finished the year ranked No. 5. From Sept. 28 through Nov. 23, Baker won nine-straight games and took down rival MidAmerica Nazarene, 37-20, on Homecoming inside Liston Stadium for its first win over the Pioneers since 1999. 2012 brought the Wildcats another appearance in the NAIA Football Championship Series Playoffs. The Wildcats went 8-2 in the regular season and traveled to Fort Wayne, Ind., to take on No. 6 ranked University of St. Francis. The Wildcats and Cougars battled throughout and the Wildcats held the high powered St. Francis offense to just 3.1 yards per carry on 41 carries, but USF held onto its lead throughout the second half and defeated Baker, 22-17. Grossner helped lead sophomore defensive end Andre Jolly to one of the top defensive seasons in the NAIA, as the Gardner, Kan., product led the NAIA with 16 sacks and was named a NAIA-AFCA All-American. Under Grossner’s leadership, 19 players earned 2012 HAAC All-Conference honors and 10 Wildcats earned the NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete award. Baker has finished in the top three in the nation in the amount of scholar-athletes the last four seasons. Notable school records set by individual Wildcats under Grossner include points scored by a player for a season (168) and career (306), touchdowns for a season (28), passing yards for a game (433), passing yards for a season (3,185), passing yards for a career (8,278), longest field goal (62 yards), passes attempted in a game (50), career passing touchdowns (60), career sacks (24.5), kicking points in a season (94), punting average in a season (41.3), field goals in a game (5) and season (23). Under Grossner, Baker has also led the NAIA in turnover margin in both 2008 and 2011. Before coming to Baker, Grossner served from 2001 to 2003 as an assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator and academic adviser at Western State College in Gunnison, Colo. From 1997 to 2000, he was the head coach at Glendale (Ariz.) Community College, guiding the Gauchos to the 2000 national championship and earning Coach of the Year honors from the American Football Coaches Association. He was the assistant coach at Glendale from 1990-91 before taking over as the offensive coordinator from 1992 to 1995. He then took over as head coach at Agua Fria High School in Avondale, Ariz., from 1996 to 1997 and was named Arizona’s Class 4A State Coach of the Year in 1996. A quarterback at Bethany College, Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College and Northern Arizona, Grossner played professionally in NFL Europe, where he was a quarterback, offensive coordinator and head coach in Nottingham, England, and Ravenna, Italy, from 1990 to 1993, guiding both teams to the national semifinals. The Wildcats are 61-25 the past seven seasons under Grossner Assistant Coaches Jason Thoren Defensive coordinator/assistant head coach Jason Thoren enters his 11th season at Baker and his 10th season overseeing the defense. Under his direction the Wildcat defensive tradition has been rebuilt to consistently perform as one of the top units in the NAIA. From Sept. 28 through Nov. 23, the 2013 Baker defense Wildcats ran for 23 touchdowns and threw for 20 and averaged 26.9 points per game. Most recently in 2013, the Wildcat offense ranked No. 9 in the country in total scoring offense with 462 points and scored more than 25 points in 11 of its 13 games. The Wildcats also ran for a total of 2,568 yards which ranked them No. 13 in the NAIA. Regalado is proud to have coached a 1st-Team All-HAAC offensive lineman six-straight years: Andy Bibb (08), Clint Benge (09), Billy Chambers (10), Aaron Rieschick (11 and 12) and Sheldon Jacks (13). Both Bibb and Benge also earned NAIA All-America honors. Miguel and wife Heather are parents of a son and daughter, Jalen and Ava. allowed just 11.6 points per game in a stretch of nine-straight wins including a 10-7 NAIA FCS Playoff win over Sterling. Within that streak, Baker allowed no Bruce Young more than 20 points in a game and shut out Culver-Stockton on the road, 39-0. The ‘Cats also ranked No. 10 in the country in scoring defense at 19 points per game and linebacker Running backs Darrick Smith was No. 3 in the NAIA in interceptions with seven. The 2012 Baker defense helped lead the Wildcats to an 8-3 overall record and appear- to the Baker University staff. The central Iowa native and four-year ance in the NAIA Football Championship Series Playoffs. The defense ranked 19th in the football lettermen at Northwest Missouri State University, Young NAIA in passing yards allowed per game at 171. Thoren’s defense also allowed just 20.3 spent 28 years as a head high school coach in Missouri. Voted as a points per game ranking No. 22 in the country. In seven of the Wildcats’ eight victories, member of the Missouri High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1999, Baker held its opponents to under 20 points. In 2011, the Wildcat defense finished 6th in the NAIA in forced turnovers (35) , 11th in the NAIA in rush defense (98.4), 8th in the NAIA in opponent third down percentage (26.7), 16th in the NAIA in opponent first downs (167), 22nd in the NAIA in scoring defense (20.2), and 26th in the NAIA in pass defense efficiency (108.8). The Wildcat defense finished the 2010 campaign ranked nationally as the 11th best team in scoring defense (15.7), the 16th best team in opponent third down percentage (30.1), and the 20th best team against the run (113). In 2009, the Baker defense finished the season ranked 6th in the NAIA in total defense (262.9), 7th in the NAIA in pass defense (153.8), 7th in the NAIA in turnovers forced (31), 15th in the NAIA in opponent third down percentage (30.8), 16th in the NAIA in sacks (28), and 24th in the NAIA in scoring defense (18.9). Before coming to Baldwin City, Thoren spent three years as a graduate assistant working with the offensive line and tight ends at NCAA Division I University of Minnesota. The Lawrence High product was a starting linebacker for the Kansas Jayhawks from 1994 to 1997 where he was an All-Big 8 and All-Big 12 selection. Thoren ended his Jayhawk career with 306 total tackles. During his high school playing career, Thoren was the recipient of the Simone Award which is given to the most outstanding high school player in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Bruce Young brings over 40 years of football coaching experience Young amassed nearly 200 wins in his long high school career. At Norborne, his team of 20 players advanced to the semifinal game. At Young’s next stop with Marceline High School, they played in the first ever “Show Me Bowl” games played in St. Louis Busch stadium, where all 6 classes of teams came together for the state championships. Young helped build the foundation for one of the most tradition rich high school programs in the KC Metro area at Ray-Pec. While coaching there in the 1980s and ‘90s, the Panthers sent over a dozen football players to play for the Baker Wildcats. Retiring from high school in 2000, Young came to Baker University for his first stop with the Wildcats. While at BU they played in 2 bowl games, with Young coaching the running backs and special teams. Leaving in 2004, Coach Young headed to Avila University where he was the head coach for five years. During his tenure with the Eagles, the team grade point averages improved, they had 6 NAIA Scholar-Athletes, and boosted a 90% graduation rate. In his final season, Avila posted one of their best records ever, plus winning their first bowl game in the schools history, the First Down Classic win over Doane College. After stepping down from Avila in 2009, Coach Grossner recruited Young back to Baker, returning to coach the running backs and help in the special teams area. Coach Young and his wife, Dwyla have three grown daughters, Julie, Lindy and Kara. Sophomore quarterback Jake Morse had a breakout year leading the HAAC in passing, throwing 17 touchdowns to only four interceptions en route to being named HAAC Cooffensive player of the year. Senior running back John Babb also led the HAAC in rushing and was named the 1st-Team All-HAAC running back. In 2012, Baker had a balanced attack with 2,056 yards rushing and 2,110 yards passing for a total of 4,166 for an average of 378.7 yards per game. Under Regalado’s direction, the He rejoined the Baker staff in 2002 and is a teacher at McLouth High School. The New Jersey native was an All-Conference and All-District 10 performer at defensive tackle for McPherson College in 1977. Since joining Coach Grossner’s staff in 2003, he has been instrumental in the development of several All-American and All-Conference defensive linemen. During Aligo’s time at Baker, the Wildcat front four has continuously ranked as one of the top defensive units in the country. He and his wife, Linn, have two adult children, Scott and Tony. Assistant Coaches Derek Doerfler Kicking Coach Coach Doerfler enters his second season coaching at Baker University. He made an immediate impact in his first season at Baker, helping guide freshman kicker Clarence Clark to an unforgettable season. Clark connected on a season long field goal of 59-yards in the Wildcats HAAC regular Jordan Robertson Student Assistant Coach season title clinching win at No. 7 ranked Missouri Valley last season. Clark was named to the 2013 Beyond Sports Network NAIA Third Team All-America squad and was a 2013 All-HAAC First Team recipient. Doerfler was a standout field goal kicker for Baker from 2006-09 and holds records for field goals made in a game (5), field goals made in a season (23), and field goals made in a career (48). He also holds the record for longest field goal (62 yards). Doerfler earned First Team All-America honors in 2007, HAAC Special Teams Player of the Year 07’, and was a three-time all conference winner. He spent the last two years playing arena football with the Mid-Missouri Outlaws where he earned First Team Taylor Files Student Assistant - Football Operations All-League in 2012. Caleb Blakesley Defensive Line Coach Coach Blakesley enters his fourth season helping lead the defensive line. He previously served as a graduate assistant coach on the staff and is now transitioning into the defensive line coach. Blakesley played at the University of Kansas from 2005-09. He played all four of his years under head coach Mark Mangino and was a vital part of the Jayhawks’ three Bowl victories during his career, helping lead KU to a Fort Worth Bowl victory over Houston in 2005, 42-13, was also on the KU squad that defeated Minnesota, 4221, in the Insight Bowl and helped lead Kansas to the 2008 Orange Bowl victory over Virgina Tech, 21-17. Jake Green Graduate Assistant 2014 will mark the second year Coach Green has served on the Baker coaching staff after an impressive career at wide receiver for the ‘Cats. Green collected 1,566 yards receiving ranking him sixth all time at BU and he caught 15 touchdown passes throughout his career.
