Delegation from Ohtaki, Japan Visiting LCS
Thanksgiving – No School
2 Hour Early Dismissal
Pro-D Day – No School
Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)
It is so great to be back in session at LCS, and to see our students and staff off to such a great start. We really hit the ground running
last week, and there is already a great deal going on. Our focus right now is making sure that all of our secondary students time
tables are set, and that students in the younger grades are settling in to their new classrooms. We have a very exciting year ahead of
us. It is my sincere hope to see all of our parents well connected to the school. Please never hesitate to email, phone or drop by for a
visit, whether to discuss a concern or just say hello. We at LCS are committed to providing your child with an exemplary education and
are always here to help.

School Goals
This year, we have two school goals. Our first goal is to see a
higher rate of student engagement, and strategies will focus
on the process of learning through inquiry. Inquiry-based
learning is a complex process where students formulate
questions; investigate to find answers, build new
understandings, and then communicate their learning to
others. Students are actively involved in solving authentic
(real-life) problems within the context of the curriculum
and/or community. Research suggests that inquiry-based
learning increases student creativity, independence, and
problem solving skills.
Our second goal is to see students as stewards of the
environment, and strategies will focus on involving more
students in our school recycling and composting program, as
well as engaging all students in some aspect of local
environmental stewardship.
Our School Growth Plan is available for viewing on our school
website. It was co-developed by administration, teaching staff
and members of our Parent Advisory Council.
School Website
Mrs. Martin works hard to maintain an up-to-date school
website. Please visit us at www.sd79.bc.ca/groups/lcss,
where you will find weekly reminders, monthly newsletters,
calendar information, staff contacts and more.
School Facebook Page
For the most current updates on what is going on at the
school, choose to like our official school Facebook page. Mrs.
Bridge does a great job updating this page on a regular basis.
Busing
If your child requires busing this year, you must register them
to ride. You can visit the transportation’s bus registration
website at:
http://www.sd79.bc.ca/departments/transportation/busregistration/
When you go to use the online registration form, you will be
prompted to enter your child’s student number. Returning
students should remember their student number (it is the
same number that they enter when they log into school
computers). If your child is new to the school, or if they do
not remember their student number, you can obtain it by
calling or emailing Mrs. Martin at the school. You can also
download a hard copy of the bus registration form and send it
to the district transportation office. If you do not have access
to a computer or a printer, you can obtain a registration form
at the school, and we will be happy to fax it to the
transportation office for you.
There is an annual busing fee for students riding district
busses. The cost breakdown for busing is:
 first child
$200
 second child $120
 third child
$80
 there is no charge for 4th and subsequent children
If the cost of busing is a financial hardship, there is an
exemption form that you can complete and bring in to the
school for Ms. Boucher to sign. These forms are available
online or at the school office.
If you have any questions about busing, you can contact the
district’s transportation department at 250-748-1066.
Student Fees
Students in grades 8 through 12 are required to pay a $25
student fee. Student fees help to offset the cost of student
activities, guest speakers, special assemblies, intramural
activities, and extra-curricular activities. Students in grades
8 through 12 are also required to pay a one-time $25
refundable textbook deposit in the event that they lose or
damage a textbook during the course of their time at LCS.
This deposit will be refunded when students graduate,
provided they have not incurred fees for damaged or lost
texts. These fees are due by October 17. Students and
parents will be notified of any outstanding fees. Please do
not hesitate to contact Ms. Boucher in confidence if
school fees are a hardship. It is not our intention to
cause any of our family’s duress.

The LCS PAC Executive would like to welcome all parents to
PAC meetings. They will be held on the third Tuesday of each
month, at 6:30pm, in the Learning Center. Our next PAC
meeting will be Tuesday, October 21st. All parents from both
the Elementary and Secondary programs are welcome to
attend. At LCS, the PAC plays a critical advisory role.
Whenever we have new ideas or initiatives that we are
considering in the school, we always bring them to the PAC for
input and feedback. The PAC also supports the school by
providing funds for special equipment and activities. Joining
the PAC is an excellent way to connect with the school, with
other parents and with administration.
Terry Fox Run
Due to our later start, we have decided to postpone the Terry
Fox Run until sometime in April. The Terry Fox Run is a very
important event to us, and we don’t want to miss out on it this
year.
