The public teaching and recreational garden is dedicated to what is still
today the most important medicinal plant in the Lorsch Pharmacopoeia.
This is the architectural highlight of the UNESCO World Heritage Area.
The delightful Königshalle hall with its colourful, world-famous sandstone
facade dating back to the Carolingian era is the best preserved building
from that era north of the Alps. The upper floor of the building (only
accessible as part of a guided tour) shows some examples of excellently
preserved murals dating from various centuries.
WISSENSSPEICHER ZEHNTSCHEUNE (TITHE BARN)
Here, architectural history really comes alive. Where corn and fruits of the
field were once stored, we today see remnants discovered in the Abbey
hill, displayed in an appropriate archaeological setting.
(Only accessible as part of a guided tour.)
Here, plants with medicinal and healing properties are to be found, just
as they are listed in the Lorsch Pharmacopoeia (since 2013 an UNESCO
world heritage document), marking the beginning of modern-day medicine
in the western world.

THE PEONY GARDEN
Just a few years after the abbey was founded in 764 a new abbey site
was established on a glacial sand dune. As well as the three remaining
buildings – Königshalle hall, fragments of the basilica and the abbey wall
– a contemplative, minimalist landscape architecture shows in impressive
style the architectural scope of the site.

THE NEW LORSCH ABBEY WORLD HERITAGE AREA
In 2014, 1,250 years after the abbey was founded, a large amount of
the extensive refurbishing and extension work will be completed, thus
greatly enhancing the attraction and range of experiences offered by the
whole site. At the heart of the three kilometre-long circuit lies the abbey
hill with the Königshalle hall, ecclesiastical fragments, the abbey wall and
the newly created herb garden. In addition, the former tithe barn houses
an information and museum centre where the intellectual history of the
location is made tangible. The newly constructed Lauresham Carolingian
noble court is unique in Europe, presenting the early Mediaeval manorial
system in an exciting, visual form.

From its earliest beginnings in 764 until its destruction in the Thirty Years
War Lorsch Abbey has experienced an exciting and chequered history. It
owes its rapid growth in importance to a number of clever moves made
by the Abbey’s directorate. Relics of Saint Nazarius were found at an
early date and the Benedictine Abbey was placed under the personal protection of the king. Seigniory, architectural history and the humanities
are the three pillars for the outstanding importance which is today
assigned Charlemagne’s former imperial abbey.

BIZ VISITORS’ INFORMATION CENTRE
The educational aspects of the museum are located in the BIZ visitors’
centre. As well as housing the museum shop and offering ticket sales,
BIZ is also the starting point for Lauresham guided tours.
LAURESHAM OUTDOOR LABORATORY –
LIFE IN THE CAROLINGIAN AGE
What was life like for the peasants and the seigniory families during
Charlemagne’s time? The Carolingian court at Lauresham was modelled on
the basis of archaeological findings. Research is performed into farming,
animal husbandry and crafts in the course of practical, everyday work.
Here, visitors can learn a variety of interesting things about the manorial
system during the Carolingian era.
ALTENMÜNSTER ABBEY (UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE)
This is the initial site of the mother abbey built in 764, which had to be
relinquished early on due to lack of space. Thanks to new landscape
architectural design work, today’s visitors can obtain a good idea of
what the site once looked like.

HEPPENHEIM
Mediaeval half-timbered houses, narrow, romantic streets in the historic
town centre and idyllic squares – these are the features typical of Heppenheim, a district administrative town famous for its wine and festival.
High above, Starkenburg castle towers over proceedings.

Upon your arrival in Lorsch, you first make for the World Heritage Area.
We recommend you join in one of the regular guided tours through the
abbey grounds. The museum centre will provide you with information
about the abbey’s origins and history. After visiting the famous Königs
halle hall, on the abbey hill with its ecclesiastical remains, tithe barn and
herb garden you will learn interesting facts about the background of
the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The mild climate that favours the growing of grapes here also makes possible the cultivation of a wide range of different plants. More than 2,500
varieties of perennial shrubs can be seen in the Hermannshof gardens. Old
trees and shrubs some of which are very rare in Germany are also to be
found here.
In the afternoon, you can set off on foot or with a bicycle hired from the
World Heritage Fleet to visit Lauresham, a Carolingian village where you
will see what life was like for the townspeople and the families of the lord
of the manor at the time of Charlemagne. After this visit, you will have
time for a walk along the World Heritage Site circuit, past Altenmünster
Abbey and the former tobacco shed.
The ancient Roman town is a surprise to all who visit, with its almost perfectly preserved historic town centre and the scenic surroundings between
the Neckar and Odenwald. It takes you on a journey back in time through
two millennia, through living history, culture and romantic flair.

FELSENMEER ‘SEA OF ROCKS’
According to legend, two giants got into an argument and started throwing
granite rocks at each other. These formed the ‘sea of rocks’ near Reichenbach. At the centre of the Bergstrasse-Odenwald Geopark nature reserve,
this magical stone landscape nestling under tall beech trees invites young
and old alike to climb and wonder at this amazing natural phenomenon.
