The limitation of this approach is that very few firms have long term straight bonds that are liquid and widely traded Looking up the rating for the firm and estimating a default spread based upon the rating. While this approach is more robust, different bonds from the same firm can have different ratings. You have to use a median rating g for the firm When in trouble (either because you have no ratings or multiple ratings for a firm), estimate a synthetic rating for your firm and the cost of debt based upon that rating. 14 15 16 Making performance measures “line-of-sight” Price Revenue Volume NOPAT Tax Operating Expenses Cost of Goods Sold SG&A EVA Raw Materials Labor Other Cost of Debt Cost of Capital Cost of Equity Pl t & Equipment Plant E i t Capital Charged Fixed Capital Capital Employed Legend: High Impact Medium Impact Low Impact Property Inventory Working Capital Receivables Payables Oh Other Good Will Intangibles 17 Market Value Added (MVA) The present value of an investment’s future EVAs is equal to its MVA Since the correct measure of a manager’s ability to create value is EVA and most managerial decisions generate benefits over a number of years • Need to measure the present value of the entire stream of future expected EVAs The potential value of a business decision is the MVA of the decision Then, using the definition of EVA, MVA can be expressed as follows: MVA EVA 1 1 WACC 1 EVA 2 1 WACC 2 EVA 3 1 WACC 3 ...... This valuation formula shows that the present value of the future stream of EVAs from a proposal p oposa is s tthe e MVA o of tthat at p proposal. oposa 18 MVA for a Constant Growth Firm MVA t Sales t (1 g ) CR WACC g OP WACC (1 g ) 19 MVA and the Four Value Drivers MVA is determined by four drivers: Sales growth Operating profitability (OP=NOPAT/Sales) Capital requirements (CR=Capital employed / Sales) Weighted average cost of capital 20 Improvements in MVA due to the Value Drivers MVA will improve if: WACC is reduced operating profitability (OP) increases the capital requirement (CR) decreases 21 The Impact of Growth The second term in brackets can be either ith positive iti or negative, ti depending on the relative size of profitability, fit bilit capital it l requirements, i t and required return by investors. The objective of VBM is to The increase Market Value Added (MVA) 26 Linking The Capital Budgeting Process To Value Creation MVA MVA increases when the firm undertakes positive net present value projects Maximizing MVA is the same as maximizing NPV 27 Du Pont Analysis อัตราผลตอบแทนผู้ถอื หุ้น (ROE) = อัตรากําไรสุ ทธิ (Net Profit Margin) x อตราการหมุ อัตราการหมนของสิ นของสนทรพย นทรัพย์ (Total Asset Turnover) x ตัวั คุณส่่ วนของผู้ ถอื หุ้ น (Equity (E it M Multiplier) lti li ) 28 Du Pont Analysis อัตราผลตอบแทนผู้ถอื หุ้น = กําไรสุ ทธิ x 100 / ส่ วนของผู้ถอื หุ้นเฉลีย่ อัตรากําไรสทธิ ุ = กําไรสทธิ ุ x 100 / รายได้ รวม อัตราการหมุนของสิ นทรัพย์ = รายได้ รวม / สิ นทรัพย์ รวมเฉลีย่ ตัวคุณส่ วนของผู้ถอื หุ้น = สิ นทรัพย์ รวมเฉลีย่ /ส่ วนของผู้ถอื หุ้นเฉลีย่
