INTRODUCTION
The Yale-NUS International Relations and Political Association (YIRPA) is an umbrella organization that engages
students in local politics and international affairs through a series of flagship programs. In line with that mission,
MasterClass is a premium class which hopes to enrich the model UN experience for students who are about to embark
on their next model UN adventure. By tapping on our pool of qualified trainers, we provide students with the opportunity

to learn more about diplomacy and the necessary skills to succeed in the model UN realm. Additionally, it is a chance
to be mentored by undergraduates who have competed in conferences across the globe, tapping on their invaluable
experience and knowledge.
MasterClass is the perfect pre-conference or activity that will help students prepare for any forthcoming conference.

MELODY MADHAVAN
Singapore
Sean hails from the Land of the Rising Sun
where he began his model UN career by
winning Best Delegate at All-Japan High School
Model UN 2011 which earned him a spot on the
Japanese national team. Upon which, Sean
attended the Global Classrooms International
Model UN 2012 in Manhattan, NY and
represented Zimbabwe in the General
th
Assembly 6 Committee which hosted over
300 delegates, discussing the issue of “Criminal
Accountability of UN Officials and Experts on
Mission”. He was awarded Honorable Mention
for his outstanding diplomatic skills and returned
home with much glory. In his spare time, Sean
enjoys fencing and coding. He is essentially a
digital samurai who enjoys listening to
Japanese 90’s music.
Melody has won numerous accolades in Model UN
conferences such as a special mention in TechfestInternational MUN (TIMUN) 2014, a high commendation
as press in Nanyang Technological University MUN

for Yale-NUS Asia Pacific Model UN 2015, along with
being the Under-Secretary General of Publicity and
Design.
Outside of MUN, she watches way too much anime for it to
be healthy, and her favourite band is Japanese – she’s a
die-hard fan of L’arc en Ciel! She loves Tokyo and can’t
wait to feast on Ichiran Ramen, have lavender earl grey
tea at the Starbucks at Shibuya and most importantly, to
get to share her love for MUN with other Japanese
students.
Walter is the incumbent president of YIRPA. He has
travelled the globe competing and chairing at Model UN
conferences by Princeton and Georgetown University.
He recently bagged three awards – Best Delegation,
Best Position Paper and Best Country Delegation at
Asian Model UN 2014 organized by Peking University in

The
MasterClass
was
highly
informative, catering to students of
drastically different experience levels.
The sheer volume of information
covered was remarkable: research
techniques, geopolitics, resolution
writing,
THIMUN
vs
UN-US
conferences, MUN procedure etc.
Aside from factual information, we
were also taught to consider the
human aspect of conferences that is
often overlooked, yet salient, how to
raise one’s EQ and interact with fellow
delegates. Additionally, this course
provided a great platform on which
mistakes could be made, and
rectified, prior to an actual conference.
