HISTORY
The program has been in existence since 1989 as an officially registered course
(reviewable tri-annually for Quality Assurance) with the Department of Education and
Training.
IMPLEMENTATION
Students who show potential to perform at top level basketball, including playing,
refereeing, coaching and administration, will be given an opportunity to develop their
individual and team skills through intense coaching.
The school has a strong history in basketball and is currently ranked Number One in
Western Australia for both boys and girls. The school has won a total of five national
titles with eight silver and six bronze. Program teams tour China on a tri-annual basis
competing in the Beijing High Schools’ Competition where the standard of play is very
skilful and physical.
The school has helped develop a wealth of talented players, including players, coaches
and referees to the AIS, National Junior Teams, NBL, WNBL and SBL competitions,
USA Colleges and High Schools, NITP, elite national and state squads, and national and
state junior teams.
The program, having the support of BWA and basketball associations throughout WA,
has direct access to specialist coaches.
Most practical sessions take place at the Willetton Basketball Stadium where the
facilities are excellent or in the new school gymnasium which is an elite training facility
with eight baskets and skills’ tracking audio-visual capability including the latest hard
and soft ware.
Positions will be offered to between 25 to 32 students (dependent upon the standard
of applicants) entering Year 7 to attend Willetton Senior High School and study
Specialised Basketball courses.
Country and international students are encouraged to apply. Parents are requested to
make private boarding arrangements where possible. The school may be able to assist
if needed.
FEES
There is a course fee. This fee will cover facilities hire, equipment and uniforms,
nominations and registrations, transportation to school games, specialised expertise, and
assistance with National Course Accreditation Registration. Without this fee, the program
could not operate.
