Six Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of St. Louis have won 80% of Region
5’s top places in this year’s state-level National History Day (NHD) competition!
The top three entries in each category from each of nine Missouri regions will advance to state competition at the University of Missouri at Columbia on April 26.
A true example of “best practice” instruction, NHD students, under the supervision of
their teachers, research a topic of their choosing based on their interests and NHD’s
annual theme—this year, “Rights & Responsibilities.” At competition students, independent of their teachers, present and defend their work done in the form of their
choice. Categories include individual/group exhibits, performances, historical
research papers, documentaries and websites.

Most Sacred Heart
Catholic School’s
enrichment class has been
studying the life of Saint Louis
IX, King of France as the City
of St. Louis celebrates its 250th
anniversary.
They are learning what an
honor it is to have our city and
archdiocese named for such a
holy man. Students have
studied the advice of Saint
Louis to his son, and some
classes have decided Saint Louis was a "Super Man." So, after listening, and taking
notes, the third grade created super capes covered with pictures and facts about Saint
Louis. They are “flying high” with new knowledge and appreciation of our
namesake!
Eight students from St. Paul Catholic School in Fenton won first
place at CBC’s Trivia Night earlier
this month at which some 350
contestants competed for prizes.
Pictured left to right, back row,
Kyle, Joseph, Nathan, Preston and
Jacob; front row left to right, Nick,
Joe and Blake—each won a $25.00
gift card to Wherenberg Theatres!
Holy Spirit Parish School of Religion’s (PSR) “Family, Faith
and Fun Night” for first graders is the one night when parents are invited to come
sit in on their child's class, and participate with them! On this special occasion, Holy
Spirit catechist Mrs. DeWitt introduced Flat
Louie to her special class.
Similar to “Flat Stanley,” the travels of the
Catholic schools’ character representing Saint
Louis are reported as they are sighted. The
students enjoy learning about his adventures,
which has created a sense of unity among schools
and PSR’s, as well as fostered a curiosity about
this holy man who is our patron.

graders enjoy pizza with Flat

Saint Mary Magdalen
Catholic School's preschool students visited Powell Hall
recently to
view a
performance
of The
Snowy
Day, an
interactive
program
based on
the classic
children’s
story by
Ezra Jack Keats, with music from
Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed
by STL Symphony musicians.
Part of the “Kiddie Concert”
series, the program introduces
young children to live symphony
performances to build an early love
and appreciation of music. The
three- and four-year-olds also
participated in learning activities
associated with the performance.
Pictured above, Paul identifies
when the music is “fast” and
when it is “slow.”

their native language.
