WORKSHOP BROCHURE
ABOUT NPTEL
NPTEL is the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning – an initiative proposed and
coordinated by the seven older IITs and the IISc. It is funded by the MHRD Since 2004. The main objective
of NPTEL is to enhance the quality of engineering and science education in the country by developing
contents for undergraduate and postgraduate curricula using video and web based courses. The curricula in
these courses broadly cover the syllabi prescribed for the engineering programs in colleges under the
universities and approved by the AICTE. More than 1000 Faculty Members from the IITs and IISc have
contributed to developing the online e-content for the NPTEL courses.
The focus of NPTEL is to help the universities and colleges to use these contents and support technology
enhanced learning in courses for (i) higher education, (ii) professional education; (iii) Distance Education
and (iv) continuing and open education, roughly in that order of preference.
Today NPTEL provides the world's largest collection of curriculum oriented course contents. As of date there
are over 765 courses available online openly and freely accessible (under Creative Commons License) by
anyone interested in learning the concerned subjects. These will soon go up to more than 1000 courses. The
NPTEL Portal (http://nptel.ac.in/) and its sister YouTube streaming video Channel
(https://www.youtube.com/iit) host these courses. The portals log almost 4 million visits by users every
month. Students prepare for GATE examinations using these contents, teachers to refresh and as help in
preparing for their classes, employed persons and others use them to learn new subjects and revise their own
knowledge. 80% of users are from India.
NPTEL has just begun trial offering of online MOOC courses with 2 subjects and hopes to launch many
more in partnership with professional bodies like NASSCOM and others. These are available from
http://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/. NPTEL with MHRD is working out the details to launch a new Virtual
Science & Technology University. One objective of this university is to offer proficiency certification
courses and programs for teachers in the colleges under various universities. It is hoped that India with its
NPTEL will be able to provide quality science and technology education to all the students under its colleges
and universities.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The NPTEL-Kerala workshop is being held at a time when Kerala is launching its own Technical University
and desires to be a major education destination for aspiring students. In the light of this, the workshop aims
to enhance the awareness of the participants to the issues related to integrating developments like the NPTEL
and some key MHRD's NME-ICT initiatives like the Virtual Labs and the Pedagogy Project in the
universities, colleges and classrooms. The TEQUIP colleges in Kerala will benefit as the workshop will
introduce web-supported Course Lesson Plans that will help integrating laboratory and software tools based
course activities in class management. The workshop is aimed at teachers, Principals, HODs and those in
charge of education administration at various levels.
The workshop will be addressed by eminent academicians and experts associated with the NPTEL, Pedagogy
Project, Virtual Labs, NME-ICT, Kerala Technical University and other universities of Kerala. The workshop
is aimed at teachers, Principals, HODs, TEQUIP associated faculty members and those in charge of
education administration in the universities and Directorates.
A special address by Swami Tejomayananda, the Chief of Chinmaya Mission is being organized during
the workshop. He will also be giving evening public discourses during the workshop dates.
