Instructional Workshop on Applied
Mathematics (IWAM 2014)
Keeping in view the need to contribute in the enhancement of Applied Mathematics in Nepalese context, The
Department of Natural Sciences (Mathematics Group) of
Kathmandu University (KU) organised a six-day Instructional Workshop on Applied Mathematics (IWAM 2014)
during February 21–26, 2014 in collaboration with
Tribhuvan University (TU), Nepal Sanskrit University
(NSU) and Nepal Mathematical Society (NMS).
Twenty five persons including faculties, research
scholars, M Phil and Master level students from KU, TU
and NSU actively participated in this workshop. Three
Nepalese professors, Prof Dr Santosh Man Maskey (TU),
Prof Chet Raj Bhatta (TU) and Prof Dr Kanhaiya Jha
(KU), and two renowned Indian professors Prof
Rajendra Prasad Pant from Kumaon University, Nainital,
and Prof Pankaj Jain from South Asian University (a
university established by SAARC), New Delhi, were
involved in this workshop as principal resource persons.
The Workshop was inaugurated on February 21,
Friday, at CV Raman Auditorium, by the Chief Guest
honourable Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Ram Kantha
Makaju Shrestha by lighting the lamp and with an
encouraging inaugural speech. In his remarks, Prof
Shrestha said that mathematics teachers must work
hard to make this subject interesting with lots of
applications and should try to implement it to our
real-life problems. Prof Jyoti Upadhyaya, Head of DoNS
gave a welcome speech. Similarly, Prof Kanhaiya Jha,
the Convener of IWAM, highlighted the objectives of
the workshop. Prof Bhadra Man Tuladhar, president of
NMS, addressed the workshop informing the activities
of NMS in Nepal. Prof Pankaj Jain shed lights on the
present-day need of such workshop to update the
university teachers and its regularity through South
Asian University.

Upadhyaya, Chief Administrative Officer, KU, and Mr
Nabin Devkota, Senior Divisional Engineer of Ministry
of Science and Technology (MOST) were among other
dignitaries to grace the Inaugural ceremony.
On February 24, the participants visited world
heritage places like Changunarayan and Bhaktpaur for
a half-day excursion. Besides regular presentations and
interactions with the resource persons, the participants
learnt to use the basics of Mathematica software. Also
they were familiarised with diverse mathematical
research areas through the contributory talks by Prof
Dr Bhadra Man Tuladhar, KU, Dr Riddhi Jung Shah,
NSU, Dr Dinesh Panthi, NSU, Dr Binod Dhakal, TU,
Dr Gyan Bahadur Thapa TU, Dr Dil Bahadur Gurung,
KU and Dr Ram Prasad Ghimire, KU, on February 25.
Prof Dr Panna Thapa graced the closing ceremony
on February 26 as the Chief guest Prof Thapa highlighted the need to value the fundamental science
through resourceful approaches and emphasised the
promotion of mathematics though collaborative
activities. Prof Bhadra Man Tuladhar also addressed
the programme followed by some remarkable and
valuable feedbacks from the resource persons Prof
Santosh Man Maskey, Prof R P Pant, Prof Pankaj Jain
and participants. Prof Thapa offered Token of Love to
the resource persons and distributed certificates to the
participants. Also, Prof Tuladhar gave Token of Love
to the participants. Prof Pankaj Jain informed that
IWAM 2015 is going to be organised by the South Asian
University at New Delhi and participants from all eight
SAARC Nations will be encouraged to apply.
The Organising Committee of this Workshop
